  • I decided to do a short walkthrough video of how I motorized my kayak with a Minn Kota 30 Lbs. thrust trolling motor. I think anyone with any kind of DIY spirit and a bit know how could do a similar build very easily. I have linked the main products I used in this project if you are interested in doing something like this on your own.
    If your new to the channel drop a sub, and if your returning thank you for hanging out again! I really value all the support and always appreciate your comments or suggestions.

    Thanks for doing this Bud! I had no idea that the stock motor always draws 100% power, regardless of which setting. One would think otherwise, ie: that each of the 5 (forward) stages would draw 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100% respectively.
    I'm thinking of doing all this, so thanks once again! Much appreciated!

      In line fuse will trip if I run at full power for too long, assume under load the power draw is more that 30 amps. If I run 80-85% then I can run for an hour plus continuously. Not a perfect system, but for the smaller lakes I fish it’s works well.

    Clicked on the link for the controller you used and it says not recommended for trolling motors. Is there a specific reason why? Your install looks super clean. Going to attempt something like this on the bass raider perhaps. Steering will be fun problem to solve for me though.

    • @CompassAngler
      @CompassAngler  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      After a lengthy talk with their customer service they told me they had issues with people running too many amps through the unit and burning them out. They said 30 amps max, so I installed a 30 amps fuse breaker and no issues over a few seasons. My little trolling motor only draws 30 amps so check your amp draw on your motor before you proceed FYI. Good luck on your project 👊🏽

    Hello. I know this was made 3 years ago and im not even sure if you will read this. I cant find that motor mount from Bassyake and on the page for that garage opener, its says "not recommended for trolling motors." Is there a modle number for the mounting bracket and have you had any problems with that power converter?

  • @WillSelby
    @WillSelby 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for the info. It says in Bold letters on their website that its not recommended for trolling motor applications. Do you happen to know why the say that? Id hate to cause some long term damage to my trolling motor. Thanks.

    • @CompassAngler
      @CompassAngler  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No issue on the trolling motor side, the issue is the amps on the speed control side. They don’t recommend more than 30 amps max, some trolling motors pull more and can burn out the speed control. I use a 30 amp max trolling motor with a inline fuse, not really worried about damaging anything and have used it an entire season without problems. Hope this helps

      I’ve heard that since the moment I set this up, especially from the manufacturer. 30 amp rating, 30 amp draw from the motor, 30 amp circuit breaker in place. Only issue I’ve had is a dead battery in the remote once. Solid as the day I put it together!
