I have a question- as a neuroscientist, what is your involvement or I suppose your level of interactivity with fields such as psychotherapy or psychology etc etc? I’ve always wondered how deep the correlation runs and how far you guys work with and are involved with it
Mayim Bialik played the title character of the NBC sitcom Blossom from 1991 to 1995. She was therefore a famous child actress when she auditioned for the Big Bang Theory.
I don't know if someone else told you but what Amy and Sheldon are working on is something they are working on at their apartment, not in a lab. It's something they are working on together at home. So you won't find it under Amy's Lab episodes. Just FYI.
This reaction video is so good! All of the personal info about balancing a lab & relationships is golden b/c most people would never even think about that sorta thing when watching a show like BBT. One complaint (and I’m so sorry, I wish I had any idea how to fix it) the audio quality between the scenes from the show versus your own voice is very noticeable. I’m not talking about volume but clarity in your diction vs the show. And I realize you’re speaking on a mike and the clips are directly from the show so of course there’ll be differences. I just wonder if the mike were closer, in a different position or if when you mix & edit your videos there’s something that could be done. I’m not a sound engineer, I could just be full of it. You said something about a bunch of notifications so I’ll leave my 2nd to last comment here.. your Tetris video was incredibly informative and I look forward to doing some further research on everything you said. Thanks for these videos, I think you’ve got something with this channel and I hope people appreciate it as much as I have. I hope one day you might have Mayim Bialik (Amy Farrah Fowler) on your show, that would be incredible. Hope you’re well! Keep posting, your content is awesome!
Thank you so much for your comment! I love that you enjoy my content. Also, your criticism was very constructive and I appreciate the way you worded it. I'm still figuring out this whole youtube thing and audio design is not something I'm super familiar with. I did notice the difference too, but couldn't figure out how to fix it in editing, I think it does have something to do with the location of the mic. Hopefully I can fix that in future videos!
I'd love to see you react to the neuroscience stuff in grey's anatomy that involves robotics. I don't recall the exact episodes, but I guess it's a recurring plot in season 11. Loved your video ♡
The joke with Howard is that Sheldon doesn't value his field (that he's an engineer, he even once defined engineers as the "oompa loompas of science") + do not have a PhD Also, as a future psychologist myself, in what sense is it different working with psychologists than neuroscientists? I laughed a little imagining possible interactions :)
Thanks for the additional context! That’s hilarious that they think that about engineers when engineers have a much more practical skill set😂 Working with psychologists is great but it does lead to some funny interactions! One main difference between us is that psychologists usually only work with humans where neuroscientists tend to use model animals. I do know a few neuro labs that work with human brains (but for that the brain has to be outside of the human) and one lab that works with living humans. But for the most part we don’t use human subjects. This led to me once asking a psychologist “what is it like to work with humans?” And then responding “don’t you have people working in your lab?”😂😂😂
I don’t understand how you don’t get it that the joke about what Sheldon says about Howard’s competence (Howard has an MS) is that the laughter is at *Sheldon* for being a jerk, not at Howard. It’s mocking that horrible hierarchical attitude in academia, not Howard for his lack of a PhD. Similarly, the “misogynist” humor mocks the sexists, not the women. (I’m a woman and a feminist, and I wouldn’t be a fan of the show if the sexism was meant to degrade women. Those jokes show how ridiculous it is that even after decades of feminist activism, there are still sexist people.)
@@AskANeuroscientist Season 4 Episode 15, The Benefactor Factor, Is about university fundraisers. When Sheldon refuses to go she tells him about her "technically" fiance and refers to a 2 photon microscope, is that a real thing?
The whole robot arms discussion actually makes me think of this idea I've had to treat spinal cord injuries. I don't know if anyone's working on this, but is it possible to send brain signals from one half of a severed spinal cord to the other half electronically like Bluetooth or something?

LOVED this video !!! Im a HUGE BIG BANG THEORY fan and dont have a clue about science lol You are very pretty and cute and likeable :) Im subbing to your channel now :) BTW to me it seems like men being babied and women being bossy is the standard plot line to MOST tv sitcoms unfortunately. Men are always portrayed as stupid and clueless ( this case book smart but stupid and clueless in other aspects of life ) and women are always portrayed as the bitchy boss type in sitcoms. I dont like that at all for either sex. Everybody Loves Raymond ( another fave sitcom of mine ) was also very known for showing men being babied and women being bitchy and bossy !!! The actor that plays SHELDON COOPER ( Jim Parsons ) is Gay himself and I wonder how he feels about those jokes on the show. I personally didnt think Howard not feeling comfortable to be messaged by a man is homophobic, just like how some women prefer to have women doctors or women masseuses instead of men !!!1
Hmm, I can see there's a lot of differences in labs/countries. Our jurnals was grey, not red 😛 I have been to at least 20 labs, none allowed food or even water bottles. 😅 When I did my master thesis I was actually alone in the lab part of the time. We had 2 phd's, but 1 was gone (pregnant) and the other was on an exchange to the Netherlands. I'm from Norway, and the professor's are hoping to win money from the leaders here to hire PhD's or postdocs. After I had done my degree I continued working a bit in the lab (for free, I just really wanted to test a reaction hypothesis), at that time the one PhD was still pregnant and the other one had written her thesis, so I was truly alone. In the lab we had 5 hood's, so space for at least 5 persons, but lack of money. 😟 But! A lot of stuff is so similar too 😅 like I had to cancel appointments with friends and family ALL THE TIME 🙈 I never knew if a flash column would take 3 hours or 12, so I had to cancel a lot right before we were to meet 😅 I have applied for a PhD, and if I get the position, that's the 1 thing I'm not looking forward to 😅😛 Also, 1 of my lab friends had the same music taste as me so we were singing soo loud in the lab 😂😂 gosh, I miss working in a lab!
I understand your attention to detail. And, while some leniency should be given from time to time for “creative/artistic license”, some inaccuracies are so blatant that they simply can’t be ignored. As a recording studio engineer (and professional musician), I drive my girlfriend crazy whenever we watch a movie or TV show where musicians or music technology is shown, as I can’t help calling out the errors I see. Mostly, it’s with scenes that are set in a recording studio, or a live performance venue; I can’t help it, it’s like I have Tourette’s Syndrome... I’ve seen movies set in the past, with scenes in recording studios in the 60’s or 70’s, and have noticed the presence of particular recording equipment that wouldn’t yet be developed for another 20 years... (not unlike watching a movie that’s set in the 1950’s, and seeing a 1999 Toyota driving down the street in the background). It’s not just with period scenes. I’ve seen mistakes with scenes that are set in modern-day studios as well, where microphones are pointed in the wrong direction(s), or are being completely misused (such as someone singing into the top-end of a side-address mic, or vice versa). Scenes depicting live performances are quite often laughable to me; the most common one I’ve seen over the years, is the nightclub band that gets up on stage, plays one song... and then takes a break. I realize that most people don’t notice these things, and likely few would care even having the errors pointed out to them, but when you’re passionate about something, and you’ve spent a large part of your life studying and devoting yourself to it, it’s difficult to not call out errors, particularly when they are errors could be so easily be corrected. That said, I do love The Big Bang series. The show and its characters have had me laughing myself to tears many times. And, I do enjoy your videos. 😊🙏

The point of humor is to be inappropriate. Connecting robots to the brain is cool. Coffeemaker in the lab...not so much. Chemist, so the designated space is usually a ways away. For excellent reasons! For chemistry, we did learn a little basic coding....but yeah....I'd rather have Howard code. It'll work better. Work/life balance is very important.
Yes. The "work wife" comment is the worst. It's been directed at me multiple times and it's usually in regards to me keeping men on task or organizing for them. I hate it, because they think it's a real compliment but it feels like portions of my work is being stereotyped.
Hi! Great question. Neuroscience and neurobiology are practically the same thing and people are constantly fighting over what to call the field. Personally I think neuroscience is more inclusive so I stick with that. Buuuuuuut labs that study different things will have different equipment so it does make sense that her lab would have some things that mine doesn't because I'm not studying brain waves. However, no one has a coffee machine just out in the lab area lol

I saw a lot of people comment that it was not homophobic. But I'm like... more than half of Howard is misogynistic, sexist, homophobic, etc. So, yeah him saying it was homophobic because of who he is as a character. The funny parts is when Howard gets call out (in that previous case by Raj) on his attempts to be a MAN!!! and in the end he is a hypocrite and has issues accepting himself. Also, like you mentioned with degrees, then picking on him doesn't help. But, in that you can see why Howard continues to be damaged.

Thanks so much for the suggestion! I’d love to do a video on cell cultures! I haven’t seen that episode so idk if that’s what they’re doing but “cells being cultured” is a real phrase that means something😂
@@AskANeuroscientist Amy intended to synthesize skin cells from both her and Sheldon to a neuron-something (?) Sounded amazing lmao
the lab is different cause on the show she got a new job at cal tech
I know you’re trying to sound accepting and all that when it comes to LGBT+ and feminism and stuff (which I also 100% support as a woman myself), but you tend to come off as thinking you’re superior to everyone else.
Imagine if this method was applied to full dive technology
I personally didnt think Howard not feeling comfortable to be messaged by a man is homophobic, just like how some women prefer to have women doctors or women masseuses instead of men !!!1
Tell the truth. Your real problem with engineering is your fear of whistles.
If you watch Young Sheldon, you'd understand him more.
did you know that the actress who plays amy is a neuroscientist IRL ?
Hmm, I can see there's a lot of differences in labs/countries. Our jurnals was grey, not red 😛 I have been to at least 20 labs, none allowed food or even water bottles. 😅
When I did my master thesis I was actually alone in the lab part of the time. 😟
But! A lot of stuff is so similar too 😅 like I had to cancel appointments with friends and family ALL THE TIME 🙈 I never knew if a flash column would take 3 hours or 12, so I had to cancel a lot right before we were to meet 😅 I have applied for a PhD, and if I get the position, that's the 1 thing I'm not looking forward to 😅😛
Also, 1 of my lab friends had the same music taste as me so we were singing soo loud in the lab 😂😂 gosh, I miss working in a lab!
😊🙏
Can you do more of these but different this time like episodes involve or uninvolved Amy
Hi! I appreciate the suggestion but the main reason I react to these episodes is because they involve neuroscience and that's kinda my thing. I don't feel like I would have much to offer if I did any other episodes. But if more people want it then I'd be happy to try!
Hey!
I just watched this video and I must say that out of all the videos- reaction videos and film analysis clips and you have the best dialogue, real life experience, and the “sand” to call things for what they are.
I applaud you and your work. I will continue to watch respond and share your videos. Thank you for your time and your contribution to TH-cam in general.
Mahalo
Also your tattoo on your right fore-arm is totally sweet!
But, did you know Amy...
Just kidding. As a teacher... I feel your pain.
I agree, with her there they should get it right. Some of the stuff you point out is easy stuff she could have fixed.
Could you react to doctor in the house ? It's an old show.
Hi! Thanks for the suggestion! I'll definitely look into it!
You need to react to Sadhguru ( Mystic from India ) videos , and comment...It will be really interesting
Thanks for telling me about them, I'll definitely look into it!
Could some things be in Amy's lab that wouldn't be in yours because Amy is a NeuroBIOLOGIST?
When TBBT was popular, like 2 years ago?
@@AskANeuroscientist LOL! Yes, they played the coffee machine for laughs. It should have been in her office (wherever that is).
Can you talk about your tattoo? What is it about?
I'd like to see your reaction to "Brain Dead" starring Bill Pullman. It is about a neurosurgeon.
Thanks for the suggestion! I haven't heard of it so I'll have to check it out!
tbh most people have a strange tendancy to skip intro to the video reaction, so they won't see it lol its a bad youtube thing
Damn your tattoo is awesome
You ought to check out the episod the guys try to get younger girls interested in science but they were bombing so they called up amy and bernanette.
That sounds super interesting! I'll definitely look into it!
Mayim Bialik is neuroscientist in real life !
what the heck what the heckkkkk i have never heard of the electrodes that move other peoples body parts that is so Syfy why arent there horror movies about this lol
Right??? I had a physiology professor who just casually brought these out one day and acted like it was super normal but it blew my mind!
Don't take comments to heart. Some comments come from people that don't pay attention to what they see or hear.
I think ur awesome, funny and very cute. I’m glad I found u and your videos.
I am falling in LOVE with you!!!
Bro like cmon, how can you be this sensitive to humor, everything offends her, jesus christ. Not everything is sexist, not everything is racist, not everything is offensive, chill out
Those tats ugghhh❤️❤️
You have such a nice aura
try to ignore because as more people follow you you will get worse comments
Thanks for the encouragement! I try to shake it off but sometimes it’s hard, ya know😬
😢Ur a goof
I saw a lot of people comment that it was not homophobic. But I'm like... more than half of Howard is misogynistic, sexist, homophobic, etc. So, yeah him saying it was homophobic because of who he is as a character. The funny parts is when Howard gets call out (in that previous case by Raj) on his attempts to be a MAN!!! and in the end he is a hypocrite and has issues accepting himself.
Also, like you mentioned with degrees, then picking on him doesn't help. But, in that you can see why Howard continues to be damaged.
She's really beautiful.. 💗
You look way better then amy
