    Hi there I am a Japanese woman who has lived in Glasgow for 7 years.
    The parades are Orange Walks also called Orange Marches.
    These are part of the religious cultural divide of the city between Protestants and Catholics.
    Orange Walks are undertaken by members of the Orange Order, a fraternal Protestant organisation who want to keep the British monarchy Protestant, and keep the UK a Protestant nation.
    These parades are most commonly seen in Northern Ireland as well as across Scotland, and usually occur on the anniversary of battles important to the Protestant cause.
    These parades remain a very controversial part of Scottish life, with some Scots calling for them to be banned, and others who say they are an important part of their culture, and of religious freedom.

      Ohh. Thank you *so* much Dr. Akiko for your thorough reply! It makes sense that the parades would be controversial. Now I've got a new level of understanding about life here. Thanks again! xx

      @@gabriellegweneth Quote: What did William of Orange do to Scotland?
      In 1695 William played a major role in ensuring the collapse of the Darien Scheme, critically important to the economy of Scotland, by ordering his English and Dutch subjects not to give any assistance to the Scottish colonists for fear of upsetting the Spanish.
      It is also tied to the Catholic and Protestant divide. William of Orange is heavily linked with Protestants/Loyalists and they generally march through heavily populated Catholic areas in a demonstration of 'power' obviously causing upset. There's plenty to read up on if you're interested.
      The second could almost be anything from the leaves rotting in the autumn, grass cutting in the summer, to a brewery close by. Far too hard to say without experiencing it. I'm in Edinburgh and we have a few breweries that really smell of hops at certain points. Really strong at the source but smells for miles in varying degrees. I lived in Glasgow for several years in the West End but never noticed anything odd in smell. We have a lot of greenery and moisture that you are probably right with it being just vegetation decay. Moisture makes smells carry a lot more and in a more concentrated form. It is likely just plant matter.

      i feel strongly that you are correct, Dr. Fukuwara. When most people talk about freedom of religion, they are focused on the word "religion". However, freedom of religion, by definition, also means freedom FROM religion. There will always be fences in human society, but, as we all know, "good fences make good neighbours". Mind your side of the fence and stop trying to influence your neighbours. ;) A civilised Canadian.

    The smell you get may come from whisky distilling. You are more likely to get a smell of it in the winter as the cold air keeps it low in the air. There is a distillery near Glasgow green that will cover the whole area when it’s cold
    The smell is malted barley being mashed

    These parades are Protestant, Christian, fraternities known as the loyal orders,(loyal to the union of the United Kingdom) the most common being the Orange Order.
    The smell you are smelling, sounds like seeds and hops from the whisky or beer distilleries/breweries which I smell pretty often too.
    Hope you are being made welcome here in Glasgow.
    My question is, Why move from the lovely Bahamas to old Scotland?
    Take care, and love from a fellow Glaswegian.

    Does it smell like toast? I mean like bread that you put into a toaster? I've noticed it every time I've been in Scotland. I love it! 😆😆😆 If it is that toast smell, I was told by a local that it was from either the breweries for beer, or the distilleries for Scotch. It's such a cool smell! We have several breweries now in San Diego, and depending where you are at certain times, you can smell that toasty smell. I think Dr A has explained the parade situation fairly well, as the comments state, the parades can be controversial and in recent times there has been rerouting of certain parades to avoid places such as certain churches to avoid possible clashes. The Orange Order has halls close to where the video was shot, assuming this was close to Lorne St, that probably explains why you hear and see them regularly. With regards the smell, I am thinking that the fall of leaves and foliage may be rotting, perhaps in a drainage system, and I guess you wouldn't get so much in the city centre. Are you getting the smell within certain areas or streets ?

    • @gabriellegweneth
      @gabriellegweneth  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ohh wow, rerouting to avoid clashes! :o And yes this is near Lorne Street. I didn't realise these groups had official, named meeting places. Thanks so much for sharing! • @anneseijbel1376
      @anneseijbel1376 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When this character says,"certain Churches", he means Catholic Chapels. They only "avoid" them because Glasgow council have forced them to reroute, due to bands stopping outside them playing tunes like the banned Billy Boys, a song about a fascist in Glasgow in the 30s whos preferred focus of racism was Irish Catholics. He also applied to the kkk to open a branch in Glasgow. Priests and elderly Mass goers were also spat on and threatened as they left morning service. On March days these 'band's come from all over Scotland and Northern Ireland to spew their racist sectarian filth onto the streets of Glasgow. It's VERY far from a local thing!

      @@anneseijbel1376 Most of those Roman catholic churches are on main arterial routes and most are no occupied when these bands are passing. These bands are invited over and a lot of them are local. you speak of racist, maybe you should take a closer look and you will see there re also non white people there, there are also orange lodges in ghana and togo, there are orange lodges consisting of who are called ethnic minorities from las vegas, mohawk indian people from canada. Aboriginals in australia, maoris in new zealand.. oh and you do know there are also orange lodges in dublin, cavan, monaghan, donegal, leitrim, and yet you clain the orange order are racist and irish. I'm trying to think of any distilleries that might be near where you live but I can't think of any, certainly when the distillery I work at does its peated malt for 6 months of the year you can certainly smell the difference in the surrounding air compared to the unpeated season. It could just be a factory that you live near by releasing certain fumes at certain times of the day or season.
    As for the Orange walk. In the 17th century, Ireland was mainly catholic,. Not long after the Union of Scotland and England, there was encouragement from the Crown and government for people from mostly Scotland and northern England to settle in Ulster. Most of those people would have been Protestants rather than Catholics. Settling on previously Irish Catholic land, these British settlers would not have settled in well with the local population. Hostility and bitterness would have been very much ingrained on both sides. Fast forward a couple of centuries to the Irish famine, and difficulties for the Irish to find work at home, and a new migration taking place. This time in the opposite direction. Irish Catholics settled in the West of Scotland, and Glasgow, in large numbers looking for work. Just like the migration previously this didn't go down well with the local people who they saw it as a threat to their jobs if the newcomers were willing to do the same work for less. More bitterness, more hostility, more division along religious differences. The Orange Walk probably by various groups throughout Glasgow probably account for 80% of the marches, but there are Catholic equivalents too. Sadly instead of something to be proud of, except for the select few taking part, these marches are embarrassing stain that our population could be so manipulated by crown, government and employers over the centuries.
    Glasgow has always had social justice at its heart, whether it was marching for the freedom of Mandela, or saying no to Thatcher suppling Rolls Royce engines to Pinchet's Chile. Its just a shame we haven't always managed to get it right on issues right here at home.

    The Orange March is celebrating the Battle of the Boyne a river in Ulster where James 2's Catholic force was defeated by the Protestant William of Orange, a Dutch king brought in for the purpose. This 1690 Battle is a part of the Ulster Protestant identity whose adherents refused to accede to the result of the Irish referendum of 1921 which led to the creation of the Irish Free State and partition of the country into a Catholic theocracy in the South and a Unionist North. The partition was accepted by most including the British government to appease the Protestants under Carson who could not accept living in a country dominated by priests. However some Southerners have always wanted a United Ireland which they dream of. The marches commemorate these events but have been a source of tension. Glasgow imported the divide in the nineteenth century when large numbers of Irish workers came looking for employment in the heavy industries which were booming then in Glasgow.

      I also thought of the smell of malt but it’s not what I’d call “sharp”. Malt’s more of a cooked smell; which when shopping in the vicinity of Trongate it used be like an invisible fog. I’d go back to flora in the area, that you’re particularly sensitive to; perhaps the common privet, gorse or wild rose thorn.

    Nothing musical whatsoever in these processions. Reworkings of penny dreadful sing along songs, such as 'The Mustache Our Father Wore', and ' If Yer, Oirish, Come Into the Parlour,' ( but only if you wear a bowler hat....). I think as Scottish society progresses, and given Glasgow's embrace of displaced immigrants- (albeit it still abhors the Catholic Irish diaspora), these penny whistle parades will hopefully be relegated to church hall car parks and motorway intersections.
    Enjoy your time in the city. It has a lot more to offer than an archaic nod to a battle that now has historians and scholars questioning the true outcome of its supporters vainglorious proclamations.

      I think if you listen carefully some of those taking part are very musical, some of the musicians in these bands are also in world champion pipe bands as well as various miltary pipe bands and scottish youth orchestras, indeed one person who is a member of a band that takes part in orange marches is also a world champion pipe band drum major, the world renowned flautist james galway was also in a band that took part in orange marches. regarding the irish diaspora, it has nothing to do with that it does have to do with irish republicanism, which is completely different. Every country in the world celebrates moments in their history, the orange order is no different from say those who remember culldoen, bannockburn or glencoe
