I also manned my parents' bakery, and when I was younger before I was allowed to handle the maths needed to deal with money I just sat in the store and called an adult if a customer comes in. It's just a thing that can be done, like doing chores such as washing dishes to help your parents out a bit at home.

As an asian i can relate to this. Not absolutely me but some of my friends are, i have a friend who works as cashier at her parents business without pay, another friend who works as a costumer service guy at his aunt's business, and another friend who helps cook at his aunt's business. Some(probably most) of their co-workers are family members as well and they are all underages, they started working for like 12-14 and up until now(17 years old) they still work there for free. It's because our family trust us in their business before they hire someone else. Btw they go to school and work at the same time, but school is their priority. They work after their school works done and they work during weekends. It must be tiring but its such a huge help especially building our confidence and social skills at a young age.

Maybe it's just me being from Europe and our cultures crush at this point, but what you just described is actually a description of illegal child labour. Age 12? Not to be drastic, but I'm a woman and at 12 I didn't even get my period, nevermind job.
I get that the situation in the video is different, but what you just described sounds concerning.
Also it's weird to say they have "more trust in family members" while they don't even deserve to get paid at the same time.

@@zimnyzmniejszy5557 before they start doing their jobs they were asked if they are willing to work. They do it because it's not against their will, and like milad they do it for gratitude, and they are enjoying as well. Sometimes when my family decides to eat or buy at their business, we hang out or talk about ramdom stuffs. Like when their friends are there, they instantly take their break because they own the business. And just like what I've said some of the workers are their family members as well, so everytime there are no costumers or there are only few, thay have time to hang out like playing uno and other stuffs. And the most interesting part about this is when there's a silly costumer they talk and laugh about it and sometimes they tell us, their friends about it lol. And just like what you've said u are from Europe and we have different cultures, for us illegal child labour is when the children are forced to work especially without pay and if their job can cause harm to them. It's just that this situations are normal to us and it would be funny for us if their parents or family will get cancelled because they let their kids, nieces, and nephews to work.

True; kids often won't understand these things until they are older. As a child, I got mad when my parents had me help without paying. As an adult, after realizing how much they did for me, I realized that not getting paid is kinda fair.
When the parents were like "you'd have to pay for your own living expenses" you realize even more that you are getting a good deal. Food, home and all of your needs while working at a Subway... that's more than worth any small part time work.

I admire his feelings, but he might look back negatively in a few years. Especially if he didn't have youtube revenue.

@@cooperanderson4609 I'm not trying to be rude, but I feel that just isn't true. Here is the thing; he's paid in food, clothes and living space.
Also, to say that it's restricting his growth is silly. Lots of people don't work while in school.
And this will still count as work experience.
Frankly, the "work experience" thing probably matters more than the money. When he's ready to live on his own, he'd get a higher paying job before then. So he'd just live with his parents until then.
And if he doesn't get a better job, he can just take over the place.
And frankly, MOST PEOPLE that do work end up spending the money on fun things anyways that won't help them in the future.
You're comment seems to imply that most kids that get jobs are going to save for the future rather than spend it.
Frankly, his willingness to work without pay instead just shows his character and his ability to have a good attitude.
And work experience is worth more than the money at this point in his life.

    • @Jaakeup
      @Jaakeup 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

@@TheDeathmail He's not able to save up in general. That's the issue here. His parents are gas lighting him into thinking that he either works for them or he doesn't work at all. Seriously though, enough with this " he's getting paid in food, clothes, and living space" That's not payment, that's what parents are SUPPOSED to give their kids. They voluntarily have a kid so now it's their job. That's not a benefit that kids have to earn.
He states that he's been working 5 years for free for a Subway that he doesn't plan on leaving any time soon in. That's not growth. If you put on a resume that you worked at a fast food restaurant for 10 years and the entire time you were just a sandwich artist, employers would wonder why you never moved up. Something tells me he's not gonna get into any kind of managerial position when his parents are keeping him as a sandwich artist so they can get away without paying him.
"Work experience matters more than money" That's just simply not true. On top of the fact that he isn't growing as an employee, him not getting paid is preventing him from growing up as a human. He probably doesn't do taxes because good ol' mom and dad are writing him off as 100% dependent and telling him that he doesn't get paid so doesn't have to. He's never gonna be able to afford a car. Probably not gonna learn about credit, might even start to realize that TH-cam doesn't pay enough or if it does, IRS is gonna come after him, might try to move out someday if he ever realizes how sucky his parents are but then he'll realize that you need credit to move out.
He's just not growing and learning when he's working for his parents for free for 39 hours a week.

They said that we can save money together and if we needed something we would just use the money from the joint account. For example, I needed a reliable car that costed a lot and they bought it for me under their insurance so that I wouldn’t pay more for teen driving insurance. My parents are smart with their money and have been generous. However, it is a tricky situation if you don’t trust your parents.

Glad things worked out for you and for anyone else here. Honestly, I don’t think working for your parents for free is something that should be encouraged and financial independence is very important to a lot of people and learning how to handle bills and rent are very important, especially if something sudden happens to their parents (which is scary is you’re not in a position where you can look after yourself financially).

Individualist ideology is a massive cause of mental illness imo. Its why a lot of people are struggling to get by and feel inadequate in their own abilities. The idea of every person being expected to have their own fully self contained success is never going to work for everyone. It just makes things more cutthroat. Its only a problem if his needs arent being met as part of his family. Selfish business people. His family might have not came from anything, but they sure have picked up selfish business habits. Subway employees don’t even get paid that much.

There are additional taxes, aka when the family pay him for example 1000 a month, he pays taxes, they pay taxes as well. At the end they as a group got less money.
He gets the basic needs + some wishes payed by his parents.
Either way they got more money overall, how exactly the work equals in pay in goods and stuff only he knows.
Where I am from this can safe a ton of money for the family as a hole.
Estimated pay of 1000 to him after taxes and stuff equals 1450 cost to the employer. Roughly.
No idea how exactly it is done in USA, guessing quite similar.
Aka your family got more money and if you fair about it with pocket money anyone is happy.

@Kat deejay True, but he could be an actual employee who is on payroll and clocks his hours, but when it comes to receiving his paycheck he doesn't collect it or he does, but, He gives the paycheck to his parents. Which I I guess would be the only legal way I see this working.
