      she's beautiful. I trained a few beautiful border collies like this growing up and we never trained them with snacks and they were the best behaved dogs I've ever been around. if u train dogs with treats when u don't have one they wont listen. this puts wrong thinking in a dogs mind and makes them worship food instead of life and people. which leads to an unhealthy dog who will end up eating lots of things they normally wouldn't. not being rude just thought I would share my thoughts on this. my pappy used to say to us "you don't live to eat u eat to live"

    I am completely frustrated training this border collie. He is about 12-14 wks old. He is very sweet but has become absolutely defiant in potty training, or to obey when it's time to go out. He should be way past this by now. I did make a mistake in the beginning by scolding for accidents, then read up on positive reinforcement. But I am out of patience. He has destroyed our carpets. I hate leaving him out for longer than a couple hours, especially if it rains I like to keep him in. But when I take him out every 1-2 hrs to let him pee, then he walks right inside and pees in front of me or hides and poops when he knows it's wrong, I am simply at wits end. I really don't know if we can keep a dog that cannot be housebroken because our yard probably isn't big enough. I don't know what to do!

      Sorry to hear this. Mt puppy wasn't house trained fully until about 4 months, he is definitely not behind, some are slower than others. I would recommend to write a schedule of when he toilets in the house so you can predict when it will happen. Then when he does go outside, massively reward him and give him treats and put a que on it so he learns the word. I would recommend taking him out more often, after playtime, sleep or eating as well. It not it may be worth contacting a local trainer for their advice. I would give him more time though. Best of luck.

    Hi Emma,
    I've just got a little boy from the same Litter as Star. We got him yesterday. Pretty smart boy. Your videos has been really helpful and I'd like to know if you suggest me any material or other videos for basic training. This is my first Border Collie (I have some experience with Golden Retriever, which are the breed I used to have in Brazil). Also, this BC puppy is my first dog in the UK.
    Thank and congrats for you videos!!!

      Alfredo Rodrigues Aww that's so nice to know, thanks for contacting me. It will be great to see how they grow up. Puppy training classes are brilliant so if there are any positive training groups in your area I would go along. I recommend Zak George TH-cam videos, the are really helpful so they may be of use. I work at a dog trainers part time and she does classes in Ashbourne and Derby if you are near by. Border collies are fantastic breeds and I hope you enjoy your boy as much as we do Star. Feel free to keep in touch, I'm assuming Amy told you about this video? 😊 Thanks for the nice comments.

    So very helpful. Just subscribed. Do you have any tips for biting while they eat. We gave our 6 month old a ham bone from Thanksgiving and the next day she was in the kennel with it and when my son went to grab it she bit him

    • @emmaguestdogtraining3624
      @emmaguestdogtraining3624  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aww thanks I'm glad. Yeah, my pup was actually similar when we first got her. The best thing is to leave her alone when she is eating something she really values. Give her it somewhere she can have space and when you take it off her swap it with something of equal or better value to her. Also you can start by, when feeding her throw food into her bowl so she knows you won't take it off her and you're rewarding her for you just being near her when eating. Hope that helps 😊 the most important thing is not to make her feel like that you are taking the item off her, then she's likely to bite.

    Hey there. I just came across your video while looking for tips on training border collie puppies. Mine is just 9 weeks old and is doing pretty well on the training. He knows sit, down , take it, leave it, his name and we are getting there with come here. My concern is over the timings of everything with him. I am aware that I shouldn't make training too long and that border collies love routine so I am struggling with building a good routine. How long did you work with your puppy at a time. When did they get to sleep? How long for? After how much play/training? I am currently working on an hour and a half for mixed play/training, switching between the two with some free exploration thrown in. This is followed by 1 and a half hours quiet time. However he doesn't seem to sleep much during that time. By the afternoon his ability to focus and all training seems to have gone. He chews furniture, ignores his name and commands he knew in the morning. I am guessing it is my daily structure that is wrong and I am looking for any advice from someone who has raised a border collie puppy well on how they structure their day. Thanks.

    • @emmaguestdogtraining3624
      @emmaguestdogtraining3624  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, aww that's really good. I would maybe try shorter sessions but more often, only about 10 minutes or until he gets bored or distracted and then have rest time in between. You don't want to do too long sessions so he gets bored of it. It's hard to put time on what I did but I think it was no more than 10 minute sessions. I cant remember how long she slept for though. Ignore the bad behaviour such as chewing and replace it with rewarding calm behaviour or distract using a toy that he can chew. Reward all good behaviour even when he settles to sleep. Best of luck, this is just from my experience 😊

    • @ebgamezzz7193
      @ebgamezzz7193 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Emma Guest Thanks for the speedy reply. It is much appreciated. I shall try to reduce the sessions to around 10 minutes. What did she spend the rest of her time doing when she wasn’t training if you don’t mind me asking? If I leave Cooper alone at all the bad behavior comes out. I don’t want to crate or play pen him when he isn’t training but am running out of ideas.

    • @emmaguestdogtraining3624
      @emmaguestdogtraining3624  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ebgamezzz7193 yeah that's a difficult one as they're so smart and energetic! Use activity toys filled with treats to work their brains, treat ball dispensers, filled Kongs and licking mats. You can do the sessions more often, also playing with toys with you. Solid chews that are gentle on their teeth but not dangerous.

    • @emmaguestdogtraining3624
      @emmaguestdogtraining3624  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Crates also aren't a bad thing to allow them to settle if they're are crate trained, I find them helpful to allow the dog to settle if they find them positive so I used them with star.

    • @ebgamezzz7193
      @ebgamezzz7193 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Emma Guest Thanks again for the suggestions. We spent most of the day encouraging him to work with chew toys and seem to have had a bit of a breakthrough this evening :) We shall keep at it and hopefully Cooper can be every bit as good as Star.

    Just got a BC this earlier this week. He’ll be 9 weeks old tomorrow. I’m already making progress with him, but am having some trouble with puppy biting. Sit command was so easy compared to getting him to stop biting. Any suggestions? How was Star regarding nipping and biting at that age? (BTW the breeder had tentatively named our puppy Star at birth until we selected his name, Logan.)

    • @emmaguestdogtraining3624
      @emmaguestdogtraining3624  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aww love the name. Star did mouth quite a lot and also liked to bite my feet. The main thing is to not punish or squeel when he bites as that is giving him attention and may be rewarding to him. Try frozen Kongs or chew toys, or stuffed toys to distract him. Whenever he bites you ignore him and give him something else to chew on eg I would always have a toy on me to swap for whatever he was biting. You've got to remember he's still learning boundaries. Hope this helps a little bit. Patience is key. Good luck.

      If you just want a house dog they are not easy, if they're not trained they can become destructive. However, if you have the time to invest into them, are active and give them plenty of stimulation, go to dog training ect then they are loyal and super intelligent. I wouldn't recommend a working collie if you aren't able to work them, go for a pet one instead. Hope this helps.

      Thanks for watching but It's not a joke, the puppy will have minimal drive to train if the reward is not worth the effort. If the praise is not clear enough, they will not know that what they are doing is correct, therefore they won't see the need to repeat that behaviour in the future. It reinforces the correct behaviour. Would you work for nothing, probably not. It worked for my dog but I agree food will not work for all.
