    Got the roos sorted at that stage, and getting a few little eggs...Perfect! I have Prarie Bluebells, but I'm interested in your chicks as well. We are actually keeping only one. We have had indoor pet hens, even in a city setting. We had one who was welcomed into the local restaurants, as she got a reputation for being less trouble than people, and ordering full entrees. She was accustomed to "table manners" from birth, and was hand fed her bites if necessary. She informed me if she needed to be taken outside, which was very appreciated. She viewed museums, explored parks, went to art and music events...she LOVED music and would trill along with the musicians/singers. She stared at paintings a though she were having deep thoughts she did not care to share. She tried to buy a few but her taste was beyond my budget. LOL Her favorite dish, house fried rice with mixed meats. A red comet, she lived six years, but they were a FULL six years. I'm retired..I have the time, the space, and the cash, and I want a pet chicken again! I'm watching the combs/earlobes start to show on mine. They are americanaXleghorn. We have sparse tails, mostly tiny combs except for one who has a DEFINATE leghorn single comb that is turning red. We all know what that means. Everybody else has the americana/peacomb showing. Fingers crossed! Best of luck with your lovely, affectionate ladies! (our escape artist is Ashley. ) Thank you for sharing the your experience!

    People who are passionate about whiting chickens are normally focused on the quality of the feathers instead of the chicken's quality of life, but you seem to treat these chickens very nicely, wich is great!

    I was just given a whiting true green and I have had her two and a half days and got 2 eggs so far. She was really picked on by her flock mates so has no feathers on her back right now so I wanted to see what she would look like once all her feathers come in properly. She is sweet and if the big girl of my flock right now, I got 3 buff orphingtons that are 8 weeks old to be friends with her and be my starter flock. First time having chickens

    • @colesbackyardcoop
      @colesbackyardcoop  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello. When you introduced her to your flock, you should have wire separation until used to her. Putting her straight in with them is why they picked on her so badly. You may want to separate her until her feathers grow in. The other chickens may pick at the new feathers and they eat them. Give her and the flock some vitamins in their water. Good luck and thanks for watching!

      Cole's Backyard Coop she is actually doing really well, she was in the coop first, and she is a bit bigger than the young ones. She is acting like a guard mom for the three smaller ones and they are all getting along really well. I didn’t put the new birds in until dark so they were all roosting together the first night and they haven’t fought at all.

    Do they have deep yellow legs? If so then I too have 2 whiting true green pallets. Trying to figure out what these 2 mystery chicks are.

    Nice video. I asked McMurray and apparently the true blues are a breed and the true greens are a hybrid. They look like golden comet+true blue to get that green egg shade. I have 2 greens and a bunch of blues and "ameraukindas". I find them nice and smart on freerange-they can be pecky. The ameraukindas are not as smart at freerange at this point. Waiting on roosters of blues and amerakindas from a different batch to mature.

    Thank you for this video! My Whiting True Greens are about 18 weeks. This is my first time with them and I was starting to question if they were roosters. When I did searches on them I couldn't find much on them. Finding your video really helped me.

    Any suggestions on how to prevent or cure broodiness? I love Buff Orpingtons but I know from when I was a kid they tend to go broody. That's the only reason why I would avoid them. Just a personal opinion on my part. i bet you miss your chickens now that you are a "town girl". Had to be an adjustment. Really love your videos. Thanks.

    • @colesbackyardcoop
      @colesbackyardcoop  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you Kevin. Broodiness is not curable but you can manage it by collecting eggs daily and watching for the signs. My buff orpington hens never went broody. It just depends on the hen. Some breeds do tend to be more broody like the buffs but mine were good layers and sweet girls. I do miss having chickens but we are enjoying the downtown city life and a view of the water. Good luck and happy chicken keeping!

      @@colesbackyardcoop Thank you again. I may try buff orpingtons. It has been a few years and charecteristics can change especially where the parent stock is from. Thanks

    My Ameraucana from McMurray was the first to lay for me at 19 weeks! She’s laid 9 eggs, in a row, skipping only one day after laying a 55 gram double yolk, they’ve been 38 grams so far. I have Whiting True Blues, all very different, one has started laying, also beautiful blue egg. About 20, 21 weeks. The Trues are sweet, but not as lap friendly as my Cuckoo Marans or Black Australorp or Speckled Sussex. One Cuckoo has started also. Really love them all..the Whiting greens and blues all look very different, which is fascinating, yet they all carry the consistent gene for green or blue eggs!

    You aren't alone on waiting longer than usual for eggs. I have only 2 of my 7 March pullets laying and mine are 30 weeks old. Talk about a killer wait. LOL I think I stressed mine out with a move and then adding new birds in. Otherwise I can't account for the slackers. 2 of the 3 Isa Browns are laying (one since mid July and the other only this week). The 3rd has been really checking out boxes lately and there are several with huge blood red combs and wattles so I think surely it'll be soon. The other 4 are 2 Speckled Sussex and 2 Easter Eggers. They live with a 2 year old Buff Orpington who is also laying though she gives 3-5 eggs a week, not bad for not being a spring chicken. The ones I added to this group were 3 Olive Eggers (hence the reason I actually started a comment. One of my Olive Egger pullets looks just like your Ursula. She's jet black with the beard and I think she's gorgeous. I think your Ursula is gorgeous. I'm partial to blue and black. The other 2 Olive Eggers I have are a solid jet black (with no beard) and the last one has copper feathering in her neck like a Black Star. We kept one of the five roosters that I had to buy with them in order to get the pullets. He's a beautiful deep blue with copper. They're Black Copper Marans rooster over Blue Ameraucanas. I can't wait till they start laying. I want to see those eggs. They're 23 weeks old. I love your updates on your chickens so I just subscribed. Keep up the good work! :)

    You may want to consider changing your feed for the birds. None of McMurrays should take more than 24 weeks to start laying. Higher protein levels help.
