    We currently have 3 australorps and 2 barred rock chickens that just started laying for us. Glad to see they ranked pretty high on the list. We absolutely love them and thinking about adding another breed into the mix. We also have 2 grey Chinese geese, a female mallard and a swedish black duck in our backyard "farm".

    I recommend Orpingtons. Really any type but i love the buff orpingtons. Silkies are also a great breed.

    We have 4 IsaBrowns we love. They are still a couple of months from laying but so sweet snd pretty. They love it when I sing to them. They come right up to my hubby and I. We also have a Buff Orpington and 2 New Jersey Giants. They currently reside in my basement but are just about to go outside to join our pack. In August we get 2 Easter Egger chicks. Our town just changed the City Ordinance in April so we could have chickens so we just started raising them. We can only have 12 in our part of town. Other areas can only have 6 or none. Feeling blessed we can have eggs for us and some neighbors.

    My backyard flock has a black australorp, buff orpington, and a speckled sussex. I would recommend all of them! They are all great layers and very pretty in my opinion! They are all very friendly, especially my buff orpington. My speckled sussex does not like to be picked up, but my other girls love to be picked up and they will all follow you around the backyard!

    That was a nice variety. I have 2 varieties that you may want to try. Jersey Black Giants are much better layers than advertised and good broody mamas and I think my favorite is probably New Hampshire Reds. My New Hamps lay well into the winter when my Rhode Island Reds usually quit in October. The New Hamps lay nice large to x-large eggs and lots of them. You should give them a try.

    Awesome vlog today, it's amazing that you have such a great flock. Deep in variety and a great cross section of most of the options available to those of us that keep chickens for hobby or purpose. I have great laying experience with my White Leghorn, Comet and Back Australorp, my Rhode Island Red is temperamental and doesn't compare to the others. And then there's Sydney, my easter egger. She came to me as a foster hen, she had been bullied badly at a friends coop so I took her in at the same time I started my coop back in November 2016. Since then she's layed about 30 eggs over two months and hasn't done a thing for months! Kudos!

    Thank you soooo much for this video comparing chicken breeds. It was very helpful to how we choose the makeup of our first flock. :-D

  • @carolinthegarden6084
    @carolinthegarden6084 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Interesting assessments and a good example of key things we would want to know about our potential flocks. Most importantly, for those of us who already have chickens, it really brings home how in the final analysis chickens are individuals and the breed is not an assurance of any trait - other than, perhaps, appearance.
    First, I know it is personal choice, but seriously - Golden Laced Wyandott appearance a 0.5. I think this breed is the most gorgeous of all my hens. She is also the only hen we have had (so far) go broody on any consistent basis. Her first broody cycle was at around 10 months of age, and she has a regular broody cycle every 3-4 months which will last anywhere from 25 to 35 days. She puts up a fuss but is never mean or pecks at us when we push her out of the box once a day so she will eat and/or drink. Our Golden also is second in laying for the longest stretch before going dormant for Winter (we do not use coop lighting). During peak laying she will give about 4 to 5 a week. During the weeks before and after peak, she gives us 2 to 3 eggs a week. She does shut down the egg factory completely from around mid-November to April.
    .... I had typed up a bunch more about my hens but around the 7th paragraph, I realized "whose channel is this anyway!" LOL. Chickens are amazing. Love them all - even the ones who end up in our freezer.

  • @thecynic807
    @thecynic807 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I have 2-welsummers 2-buff Orpingtons and 4-australorps.
    Just started laying 3 weeks ago. And the welsummers lay the most. Almost an egg everyday. The australorps are laying the least. And the buffs more than 4 eggs a week from both.
    That’s awesome for winter. Maybe because they started laying in the winter. I do feed them really well. Sunflower seeds and meal worms daily added to their feed.

    • @whitehouseonthehill
      @whitehouseonthehill  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +The Cynic - new layers should do pretty well in this weather. Ours are having a rough time, not getting much over the last 1-2 weeks, but it’s only a matter of time that we’ll be swimming in eggs again

    • @CarolReidCA
      @CarolReidCA 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      And add, "What does "broody" mean?" Some of us are really new to all this! Noise levels are very important for many people too, as well as being calm, low-key hens. Some areas don't want roosters because of the noise, generally.
      Also, for those who aren't allowed to have roosters, how can you go about finding a rooster to fertilize the eggs of your hens? Is there a network of people to find essentially a chicken "stud service" of sorts? Are there networks for specific breeds, for breeders and for specific health issues, problems for certain breeds?

    • @missmaam792
      @missmaam792 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@CarolReidCA , "broody" means that they (hens) want to sit on their eggs for hatching. They may be protective of their eggs (i.e. pecking at you if you attempt to collect) and may stop laying if left to sit on those eggs. Broody hens for supplying chicks, and non-broody hens for a consistent supply of eggs.

    Bantys are good to let out of the hen house and get bugs around the house and in the lawn. My mom had about 4 hens and a rooster Banty, that had free roam and she would call them to the barn at night. They also chase off mice. Just have to watch them in the garden. They are great little birds and are the bravest of all chickens. She got eggs from Rhoad Island Reds. Big and lots of double yikes. Also would rescue 6 or 8 leghorn chickens from the egg farm every year and they had goose sized eggs! She fed them well and although their beaks and feet were messed up, those that survived were her favorites. Very good layers! Happy and friendly birds.

    Ok so I have a question that I feel really sheepish about even asking but I am a bit confused. You have many chickens of different types so do they all breed with the few roosters you have of a different type? If so what kind of chick is then produced? Is it then like the momma, poppa, or a hybrid chick? Thanks for the answers because I would like to start up soon on having some chickens but want to know if the rooster needs to be the same as the chickens for breeding? Thanks for your time and info!!

      @zedbee2736 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      On average, they usually come out as some form of hybrid. Depending on genes, they can have recessive genes from their Mum and dominant genes from their pop, and they end up looking like their pop, but still capable of laying eggs that hatch out like mum or pop. Hope that helps?

      Ralph Y - I would definitely raise some Bresse if we could get a hold of them, pretty rare in the US outside of Greenfire Farms or a few Homestead friends in Alabama. I do talk about them in this video: th-cam.com/video/fRqsy0nwETY/w-d-xo.html

    What fun seeing all those chickens! (And I'm so glad you got some exercise!!! :-D) I think you should get some Dark Cornish next, and compare them to Red Rangers. I'm trying to do the sustainable homestead free range chicken thing, so this year I'm trying Icelandics for eggs and broodiness, and got some more Dark Cornish for meat (I've had one hen for a couple of years, I ate one roo and the other died, so I couldn't raise any more.) I've found the Dark Cornish to be nice meaty birds with good foraging abilities, but not sure how well they reproduce. I'll be very interested to see how it goes with your Red Ranger raising project. :)

    • @whitehouseonthehill
      @whitehouseonthehill  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dark Cornish... not a bad way to go, I almost got Black Rangers from freedomrangers.com - they looked cool. But your way would be more sustainable, I like that. I'd be pretty psyched to be able to produce my own meat birds year in and year out. How do you like the Icelandics? They seem to be all the buzz this year, I don't know where to get them.

      My Icies are young, smallish, lean, good flyers, good foragers, very wild. Not pets at all, waiting to see how well they lay. But they are stunningly beautiful birds. I managed to hatch one from an egg that came from 6,ooo feet lower elevation (David Grote in WI.) That story will be a vlog unto itself when I get my channel going. :) Then I bought 5 teenagers from Idaho. To find a reputable breeder I suggest joining the Icie fb group - they have a very complete list of people with actual Icies (a lot of people make claims, but have birds of mixed heritage, not real Icies.) David Grote of Whippoorwhill Farm is probably the biggest source of genuine Icies. www.davidgrote.com/chickens.html

    We purchased 8 chicks from a local coop...2 of each of the following breed: barnevelder, buff orpington, barred rock and gold laced wyandotte. One of the barnevelder turned out to be a rooster (and then fell victim to a predator). He was beautiful! One of our barred hens disappeared. So we have 6 hens remaining. They just started laying last week! Talk about excitement!
    So far we have gathered 6 eggs. A couple days we got 2. Some days none. They lay in the coop but not in the boxes we built. Is this normal?

    I love the French Marans. I just had problems with the roosters Combs freezing in the winter months. I wish someone would develop a rose comb Marans. I loved the roosters because they were very tolerant of me by being in their space and messing with their hens. I had of them at once. They were beautiful and never gave me a bit of trouble I liked the chocolate brown eggs of the hens.All that being said, I think when I get chickens I will get Buckeyes, Wyandott, and Americaunas. BUT no roosters this time!

      White House on the Hill, I guess I should proofread my comments before posting. I just noticed a big boo boo. I wrote that I had 5 Marans Roosters at one time but the 5 didn't print. I had over 100 hens at the time and about 36 ducks, 3 Pilgrim geese, 3 Blue Slate Turkeys and 10 Coturnix quail. Obviously I sold eggs and chicks or started pullets or a hen here and there. I didn't like and still don't like the black and white striped chickens like Barred Rocks, Dominiques, or Cukoo Marans. Nothing to do with egg production or quality. The striped pattern makes me dizzy I think.Or maybe I was attacked by a Barred Rock Rooster as a small child. I do remember getting attacked by a roo but don't remember what it looked like. Perhaps that it because I never liked them. if someone gave me Barred Rock hens I would immediately re-home them. I don't like Rhode Isand Reds for another reason. They don't forget well (except on their own eggs sometimes) and they can be real hogs at the feeder. I preferred the Buckeyes over the RIRs. They are more docile and better foragers I think. Leghorns are great layer and efficient at food conversion. They are smallish hens but lay a large egg for their size. They are good for more temperate zones as they have a large comb that can freeze in very cold weather. I got a few 1 yr olds at an auction one year. They had come from a commercial egg farm where they have 6 hens in a 2x2 cage, never see real sunshine (only 24hours of artificial light), never take a dust bath, never even touch the ground or taste a blade of grass. They came from that to my 5 acres where they could free range in the sunshine all day, eat all the grass, weeds, bugs, and fallen apples they could hold as well as quality feed. There was a secure barn for them to roost in and pleanty of nest boxes if they felt the need to lay (no pressure though.) This was how they lived out their lives on Happy Hen Egg Farm.

    • @dianarussell6278
      @dianarussell6278 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thomas Lamprogiorgos, Yeah, I tried that and it didn't work. I had 5 roosters and a few hens that needed it. It was difficult to keep up with because most of them roosted out of my reach. Also I was working and didn't have time to chase them down before work on below freezing days. If I get them again I will only get hens. I love their chocolate colored eggs.

    • @dianarussell6278
      @dianarussell6278 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thomas Lamprogiorgos, You misunderstood, my birds (chicken, ducks, turkeys) didn't sleep outside. They had a small barn for their coop but the top of their roost was 7ft high. During the day they free ranged on our property until a fox started coming during the day while I was at work and decimated my flock. Before that I had over 100 hens, 5 roosters, 36 ducks, and 3 turkeys, After that fox was dealt with, I had to hire someone to fence part of our pasture. Then they had free range of the pasture. Except for days when we had blizzards they were allowed outside. Most of the hens didn't like to walk in snow though.
      I guess anything that happened to my birds was ultimately my fault (if you want to lay blame) as I was their caretaker. I did the best I could with what I had. I felt bad that I couldn't keep their comes from frostbite because it deminished their beauty but it didn't effect their health or their roosterness.
      I won't get chickens again until we move and I am able to set up a coop. We are leaving our homestead and downsizing. We may move into town where we will be limited to 10 hens and no roosters. I may fudge and throw in a few ducks. Everything is up in the air right now.

    • @dianarussell6278
      @dianarussell6278 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thomas Lamprogiorgos. I agree the water fowl shouldn't be kept with chickens. That is possibly why I had issues with my rooster Combs getting frostbite. However, I didn't have other buildings to separate them at the time. I will know better next time.

    I have had a small (5-6) backyard flock of hens for many years. My faves . . . Barred Rock (friendly and good egg layers), Rhode Island Red (lovely color and very friendly), Buff Orpington (and although in the video he says that they are not that great looking, I think their full, fat, feathered bodies are striking. However, they are broody). I'm in California with hot summers and very mild winters because that is a major consideration when selecting breeds.

    Just wanted to say really appreciate the time and exhausting effort put into sharing your experience. I hate to say but I found ranking a bird based on appearance to be a bit biased. Much like artwork one individual may enjoy the colors, contrast, and creativity whilst another would shrug and say meh... Being there is numerous breeds to choose from to cater the needs as a home or farmstead I was rather hoping you could go more in depth of the 22 picks as to how you ranked your categories. Such as when it comes to egg laying the consistency/frequency or why a meat purposed bird is considered based on weight to age of maturity. Go above and beyond rating each category individually what breed is best for egg laying, combination, meat, etc...
    All in all it's just a comment, I do appreciate you taking the time to do this, hope this video generates decent passive income, and admire the opportunity you have this experience in your life!

    Hello
    The difference between the ameraucana and the Easter egger is that the ameraucana is a pure breed while the Easter egger a cross is between a blue layer, like araucana/ameraucana and another chicken breed.
    Have a good day
