Nice day to be out fishing, I am going next week. Ben how do the fish taste from Dragon Lake, I would think muddy , grassy because being shallow. I have a downrigger tip for you which we have used for years. Attach a 3-4 ft line from the ball to your downrigger clip.
Take and old broom handle or stick about 3 ft long. Put a screw about 1 inch from the end . Now bring the ball just out of the water,
slide the stick end with the screw under the 3-4 ft clip line and just pull up and there is your clip out of the water and in easy reach without you having to bring the down rigger up ,. This way your down rigger line stays taught. Now having the clip line long does two things , one since your rod line is attached to the clip line 3-4 ft back from the ball you can see those light nibbles etc that kokanne do at times and second it is easier to then to watch your tip give even the slightest wiggle which is not deadened by the clip and or its line being deadened by being so close to the cannon ball. We use 2 to 4 lb balls only larger when we have to go past 30 ft down. Yes there is more sway back especially with the lighter balls but you can adjust for that, it is only a couple of feet up with a 2 lb ball. Try the longer clip line and hook stick and say good by to downrigger tangles and having to tip up the downrigger every time.

I am not a fan of the taste of the fish in Dragon. As you mention, they can be muddy tasting most of the year. This is just my personal opinion. As for long downrigger clips, I have tried this. In fact, they were too long where I was worried about tangling in my motor. I thought the same thing about hanging the clip inside the boat. I thought about making a retrieving stick, but never got around to it. Maybe this is something I'll try soon.

@@FougereFamilyAdventures with a 3 ft clip line you won't get near your motor , I use 4 ft in my 12 ft Lund and never had a problem. they always trail straight back. To make the stick all you need is a 1 in piece of dowel 3 ft long or similar and a screw. Not rocket science.

I agree. The long release clips I made were waaayyy too long. 🤣
