Excellent video Patrick, very informative and essential knowledge. I found it very helpful when you explained this to me last week and knowing the mechanics behind what the truck is doing is so helpful to a newcomer like me. Like you said nobody explains this to you beforehand anymore. It should help with pulling out of junctions and roundabouts too , hopefully, they'll be a lot smoother to kind of get that bite just before releasing the brake.
Assuming you took a car test before doing the HGV training, were you not required to co-ordinate engine control and handbrake control on the car test hill start? I took my car test in 1982 and back then there was a specific wording for failure to co-ordinate the clutch, throttle and handbrake.
Yes you're absolutely right it was essential. What helped me here was knowing the mechanics behind how the gearbox worked, I assumed it was like the classic cvt automatic gearbox which is already pulling when you release the brake. But it's not it's an AMT Automated Manual Transmission where a computer selects the gear and does the job of a clutch and so the characteristics are slightly different. So after it was explained it made more sense, that's why I find these tips so good. It's a little difference but good to know@@Phiyedough
I'm quite new to anything over 7.5t but I believe most new trucks have a type of automatic gearbox or intelligent gearbox, it's better for the environment. So what with electric becoming a thing too I guess it will soon be hard to find a typical manual. Some people are going from passing their automatic only car licences straight to class 1 these days.
@@Phiyedough yeah they AMTs it’s very similar to auto gearbox, but as I said can roll back, hard to find manual trucks these days though, take it easy🤙🏻
I passed my test on Friday with the added help from your videos and tips so thankyou, I will continue to watch your content though for extra knowledge
@@kayleynetting5356 you are very welcome, I’m really glad they help! Drive safe🤙🏻
Well done👍

@ yeah, we got that. Take it easy🤙🏻
Can you please do a video on how to use engine break on a fully loaded truck ?
Yeah, sure
It’s coming, drive safe🤙🏻
Do trucks have automatic gearboxes? I've only driven a 7.5 tonne but it was manual.
