    Downward Spiral is a top ten album of all time and an experience to listen to in its entirety. NIN’s apex.

      Totally agree....Downward Spiral is so iconic, especially when you think about where it was recorded, and the dark place Trent was in when recording the album. It is a complete artistic achievement.

    Trent Reznor is a musical genius. From where he started to the point he is at now, an Oscar Winner for a Film Score. He can do everything. From a simple and haunting piano piece to an Industrial Thrash. Some songs will resonate with you and others won't.

    NIN is very much known for their live performances, to the point where new technologies like LCD screens and lighting techniques have literally been INVENTED just to be in their live shows. I've seen him twice, once at Red Rocks in Colorado, and once in an Amphitheater, both were amazing not just for the music but for the visuals too. Woodstock 94 is very old NIN, a great performance, but just think about what they put on here and then give them 25 years to improve on it. =P

    I was in that mud pit at that show in '94... have the scar on my forehead from some dudes tooth falling on me from crowd-surfing. I have a mic from the guitarist that got kicked into the front row at the end of the show in my collection of stuff thrown from the stages and a lifetime of memories of seeing Rollins Band, Metallica, Green Day, RHCP, Janes Addiction, Blind Mellon, Primus, Joe Cocker, Cyprus Hill, and so many more amazing bands. NIN was the reason I hitchhiked for 200 miles and hopped the fence to get there though.

    Yeah I remember getting this on pay per view and partied the whole weekend watching Woodstock ‘94. They moshed down in the mud with everyone right before their set but later on they said they regret doing it because it made playing a nightmare. I’ve seen them live twice. The first time they co-headlined with David Bowie, crazy good, such an epic show watching both on the same stage doing Hurt and Reptile. The second time I saw them happened to have A Perfect Circle open, which was actually APC’s very first concert. Crazy, during the show Trent Reznor stopped everything to save a girl who was getting trampled in the pit and after she was safe they immediately picked up precisely where they left off, mind blowing.

    Something to keep in mind...although Woodstock 94 is without question the most historically significant NIN live performance, it really was a sub-par mix. Things went very wrong and you can notice this if you watch enough of it. There are moments where someone is singing yet you don't hear anything or they are playing guitar but you don't really hear it. There are layers to the songs that are usually there but seem to be completely missing. It was a chaotic night and things went wrong.

    • @nathanpapp432
      @nathanpapp432 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are all kinds of stories about this performance. Supposedly Trent and Danny Lohner (the bass player) got into a fight as they were getting off the bus and thats why they are covered in mud. Ive heard that they were all on acid/shrooms/mescalin or some type of psychedelics. It was raining and there were all kinds of equipment issues, mics not working, keyboards not working. You can see Trent yelling and glaring at people off stage as shit isnt working. Its an amazing spectacle but one of their worst shows in terms of audio quality.

    • @jasonhicks800
      @jasonhicks800 ปีที่แล้ว

      They talked about it on a zoom call regarding HOF induction that didn't happen and then recently they all went to HOF and did a Q&A. They didn't say anything about a fight as Danny brought it up that that something blew or shorted b/c of the rain I think from the moment they went on stage and Trent being rough on stage didn't help matters.

    Some missing context - I watched this with my dad on pay per view back in 94. That whole day it was raining at Woodstock. People started slinging mud at Green Day in the afternoon, and Billie Joe would sling it back. No other bands really paid the rain any mind, but then the evening rolls around, and the members of NiN show up on stage covered head to toe in mud and fucking KILLED. If you want Nine Inch Nails live stuff you can always just look up the "And All That Could Have Been" live DVD footage. It's an official recording and the quality is quite good.
    This song is fairly raw and explicit, but that's how NIN is I suppose. No need to pull any punches. I take it Trent didn't care too much for the lady this song is about.

    2009 live on stage Melbourne, “Burn”, “Letting You”, “10,000” “Wish” “I’m Afraid of Americans”Also live on VEVO “Copy of A”. Also if you just want an expose of their technical tightness, check out some of their live rehearsal vids from 2008. As far as Albums go most people would turn you onto “Pretty Hate Machine” or “Downward Spiral” but I would say look into “The Fragile”. Haven’t heard a complete comprehensive work like it. It’s regarded by many as his “Magnum Opus.” Trent is all about the details…and the newer concert recordings are very clean and balanced.

The dried mud of they're outfits was a result of they hanging out with fans who were mud sliding from all the rain. The resulting look just added to the atmosphere of his music and the performance.

      i've been a fan from the very beginning and my first gig was tour for The Downward Spiral and i agree that is another level, but, in my humble opinion I feel that The Fragile is the apex in terms of songwriting, arrangement, musicianship and lyrical content, a more rounded experience... and this is because it came from a far less pained part of Trent where his genius flowed on more positive waves - but isn't that the beauty of music and it's relationship to the individual listener Respect & Peace

    That is Trent at his absolute best and absolute worst. It's amazing he survived this period of his life and it shows in these performances. The irony is he actually hated this show but that probably has more to do with where he was mentally at the time. This song has even more impact if you listen to the whole of The Downward Spiral as each song tells a story of completely falling apart.

    I've seen NIN 5 times.. The 1st time I saw them was at the March of the Pigs tour in 94 in San Jose.
    (Yep I dropped 50.00 on that long sleeve concert shirt. lol)
    I'll give you an idea of what the show was like.
    Imagine the reverberation you feel from the Pink Floyds song 'Time' when the bomb goes off.
    and how startled you are when it does goes off.
    That's the feeling you get if the bomb reverberation lasted the entire f*cking NIN's show.
    You could feel the music pound your chest and come up through your feet.
    Trent Reznor to me is a music God.
    And Downward Spiral is the proof.

    Every Album is Different, but try Stay Here of the Filth Album. Studio Version. another good Song (In My Opinion) is Helpless Child of the Soundtracks For The Blind Album, and Screenshot from To Be Kind. Also Studio Version for these choice's as well. Opeth to Pop, is Swans to Opeth. as in, Swans are difficult to get into, but WELL WORTH IT if you do. you gotta Start Small, lol.
