I've been training Wing Chun for almost 21 years. I started training Uechi Ryu for the past year and a half. I love both styles. No wonder their roots go back to southern China... everytime I find more and more similarities and ways in which both styles could enhance each other (without changing the roots of course!). Great video and insights! Best wishes from Argentina!

Glad to see karate being taught correctly abroad. I've spent 30 years living and studying different martial arts in Japan and the one thing that stuck with me the most about karate was the concept that "all blocks are strikes." When I was taught that years ago it really opened doors as I studied other arts. Good stuff!

Great teaching......yes a block is very effective!!........in Shotokan some can break an arm with just an outside form block.... if you break an arm with just a block they don't need to feel your punch!!.......God Bless you Sir!!

Good job David. Good knowledge shown. Maybe my close combat seminar can be shown also. I guess it was lost.

Just a little note but the "break" to the choke is really a break to an ATTEMPTED choke, in short you break the hold BEFORE it "sets in". Just like any counter to a hold.

Indeed. We like to train the technique to varying levels of intensity to train if the attacker attempts, slightly locks, or fully locks the movement.

A very nice self defence Karate Style ❤ Sometimes it remember me of Sifu Yip Mans Wing Chun. Unfortunately there are almost no schools in Germany for Uechi Ryu Karate 😢 The most are for Shotokan, Goyu Ryu, Wado Ryu and Kyokushin Kaikan. 😔

That's too bad. I hope the video helps you get a taste of Uechi-ryu.

Never understand why Karatekas have to wear very long belts / Obi(s)... The function of the belt is to close the Kimono, and also to make sure your pants don't fall off. That's it. You really don't need long ones...Another thing. You really don't need long pants' legs to the extent that you would trip on your own pants. I see that old time Karatekas wore only knee length pants. That's it.

An interesting thought. Unfortunately I don't know more on the topic. Maybe simply a change in fashion. Or a matter of climate depending on where the student trains. I have found with the thicker karate obi it is harder to keep the knot tight with a shorter belt. I have seen very old photos and videos of the Okinawans training in what we would consider underwear!

@@leithkarate: For goodness' sake, please down strip down to your skivvy and train. The days of Naked Greek Athletes training and wrestling naked is long gone...besides the Greeks have other cultural thing going... Don't do that, please.
