  • It's a new game that's sweeping the nation. We call it: Was It Great, or Were You 8? Alonso and Christy are looking back at some of their favorite movies from childhood to see whether they truly were great, or we just loved them because we were 8 years old and feel nostalgic about them.
First up from Alonso Duralde (The Wrap, Linoleum Knife, Maximum Film, @aduralde) is "The Bad News Bears" (1976). Christy Lemire (RogerEbert.com, @christylemire) will pick next time. Directed by Michael Ritchie, written by Bill Lancaster. Starring Walter Matthau, Tatum O'Neal, Jackie Earle Haley, Vic Morrow and Chris Barnes.

One of the best movies ever made. 8 year olds did not see this in the theaters. It was PG with a lot of language. I was 9 at the time and my parents would never take me then. There was no 2nd run for this.

I definitely saw it in a theater at about 8, with other kids and no parents. I don't think PG ever kept kids under 12 getting into movies. I saw Close Encounters and Star Wars (PG rated) with no parents around this time, as well. And I will add, all 3 were great movies.

It was great in '76, and it's still great now in 2023. I played on a losing kid's baseball team the year it was released, and I think all of us on the team saw the truth on display in Richie's film. Bill Lancaster's screenplay should have been nominated for an Oscar, as should have Patrick Williams' score.

Tanner wasn't racist, he hated everybody that wasn't him, and he hated them equally. I was 9 when this movie came out, I saw it in theaters (first run). The funny thing is that I knew a kid like Tanner. Ready to fight at the drop of a hat, and generally didn't like anybody. Sure, he could get along with you if you didn't annoy him in the moment, but it didn't take much to hit that hair trigger of his. His mouth also wrote checks his ass couldn't cash. But he never backed down.

I just rewatched this movie for the first time in decades. It’s brilliant, and yeah, there is no way anything like this would get made today. One thing I didn’t see the first time I saw it that really struck me now was the contrast between the coaches in the final game, and how the opposing team’s coach hits his own son, and how his son then intentionally gives up an infield homer before walking off the field. I also noticed how that boy’s mom goes after his father, her own husband, and sides with her son. And all I could think was, “That dad just destroyed his own family over a little league baseball game. He’s gonna be sleeping in the couch from now on.”
    Great movie!

I saw this when it came out in 1976 and it remains one of my favorite movies of all time. It’s Theme was about the ultra competitiveness of parents who live vicariously through their kids, the most important scene in the movie is when Walter Matthau is mad that they are behind in the championship, any screens at them, don’t you want to beat those bastards? A lightbulb moment came up, Walter Matthau has become Roy Turner, the coach he despises the most. The one who I told him that he should just quit. He was fighting to be Turner not coach a championship game. He didn’t feel humiliated at what he was doing and said to the kids to do the best you can. It is so important

No. It was great. I just revisited this film after not seeing it for at least 20 years. Last time I saw it I was in High School, or maybe college. In any case, i love it FAR more now than I did seeing it as a kid. I can't stop watching it. So many great scenes. Terrific cast of young actors. Tatum being amazing. Walter being the colossal actor he was. The scene where Buttermaker blows up at Amanda when she's getting too close is absolutely heart-breaking, and incredibly well-crafted. Tanner and Lupus' closing lines made for one of the most smile-inducing closing moments in the history of film. I can't say enough nice things about The Bad News Bears.

I wasn't eight when this movie originally was released, but I do remember seeing Xanadu (1980) as a child. I was fixated, even entranced. I drove my family crazy with my off-tune singing of the movie's title song around the house (along with sliding "aka skating" on my home's wooden floors in my socks). Basically I was doing what younglings from 2013 were doing to their families concerning "Let It Go" from Frozen. Ah, memories. LOVE this game btw. What about playing, "Was it Great, or Were You at least 8?" Lots of movies I saw as a teenager that I will never admit to liking or even seeing could fill that category.

Pre-Covid there used to be Summer movie nights at the local open air market. Bad News Bears was considered until the trailer was posted on the local community page. Even the mayor chimed in that the film was inappropriate and so many, including friends of mine, gave thanks that we have evolved beyond trash like this. I though about responding, but I stayed quiet. Facebook is rarely a place to discuss concepts like irony and satire. Michael Ritchie, at his best, was great at satirizing the American obsession with competition. Bad News Bears definitely falls into the "Great" category. Bad News Bears and The Candidate are my two favorite Ritchie films; too bad the latter seems to be unavailable.

Karina Longworth convinced me, in the midst of her ten episode Polly Platt documentary, that Polly Platt did more - as a production designer - to make good movies better than anyone in Hollywood history. She told a few great stories about Platt's essential contributions to the honesty of the dramatic situations in The Bad News Bears. She also loved Tatum O'Neal like a niece.

I saw Hook in the theater when I was 8 and loved it. It was only later that I learned it was mostly reviled by critics at the time. Rewatching it as an adult, I realize it is not one of Spielberg's best movies, but far from the worst in my opinion. It's still a fun and enjoyable watch and there were themes I could now relate to as an adult, such as not getting so lost in your job that you lose yourself and maintaining a sense of childlike wonder.

@@BreakfastAllDay I love this idea of yours and will seek out the others you've done. So many films (like music) that my young self thought were great but now cause my 56-yr old eyes to roll. And not all of them from when I was "8", either! (I remember my 17 yr old self thinking "The Breakfast Club" was so deep, and years later . . . not so much)
But then there are films like Bad News Bears, that hold up so well!

I remember seeing it in the theater. Why did he slap Amanda. Didn't he know she is VIP she should get even. She could play on my team. Maybe they will make a sequel. Mandy gets even and has bewbs now and looks great

I was 8 when the Bad News Bears came out and I wanted to see that movie so badly in the theaters but to no avail.
My dad did take us to see The Omen though.
    Jerk, much?

I saw Batman Forever when I was 8 and I still consider that film a Masterpiece. Ok Jim Carrey sucks but other than him it’s great.
