To me in Jerry’s second solo he is expressing the process of carefully navigating tumultuous times in one’s life and it’s just so beautiful and balanced.
I was 19 years old and a sophomore in college in Boulder Colorado. My girlfriend was from the Bay Area and since these shows fell in our spring break we decided to hitch hike to SF. This show was the first time I made it down to the first few rows of people right in front of Bobby. We dosed that night and I distinctly remember this song and the feeling of being enveloped by Jerry's guitar. Thanks for putting this great mix out here for all of us to enjoy and reflect.
Thank you for sharing. I would truly have loved to have heard this live. Its my favorite recording of any music ever. This specific recording invokes emotions I cant feel in any other way.
First time I heard this particular Row Jimmy it brought tears to my eyes. No enhancement other than headphones. The second solo is just....sublime. How can anyone really listen to it and not be moved? Love Jerry....Miss Jerry.
Lang Waters After two night of Trey, we miss Jerry so much it hurts. Thank the heaven's the end is near and the boys can move on. We have over 1000 great live shows to watch and enjoy, so why watch the Dead w/o Jerry.
Totally agree with what you said.Generally, I think Row Jimmy is a "good" song--perhaps very good. But this version is just way beyond any other version I've heard.Yeah, in the second solo Jerry just takes off.
Pretty much every Row Jimmy from 77 that I've heard is great to spectacular (many songs from 77 fit that category), but generally speaking, this one is extra special, no doubt.
Here's what Jerry said about this song - one of my faves - in 1976 - "Well I don’t know, but there are some songs that I really loved…like I really loved “Row Jimmy Row.” That was one of my favorite songs of ones that I’ve written. I loved it. Nobody else really liked it very much - we always did it - but nobody liked it very much, at least in the same way I did." simply put, coming in at about the 4:00 mark, brace yourselves as Jerry leads us through one of the all time great, ethereal jams Chase this is hands down the best Row Jimmy on youtube. I also like 1 22 78 from Eugene Oregon with its slightly reggae feel, but it still runs a distant second.
Thanks for posting, never would hear this kind of stuff if it were not for the work of the Dead and the others who taped and shared. Thanks a billion. One of the greatest Row Jimmy's ever.

Was hanging out at and under the alcove up front for many of these shows - Kezar through the closing of winterland. Pics are of the free concert in the Park with JS. But this was a classic come-home show. Loved it then, thanks for letting me listen to it now!!
everyone here loves the second solo in this version, and it's true: it's amazing. however, the first (slide) solo is thus underrated. It's a miniature masterpiece of jerry's light touch picking technique with extra sustain that the slide gives him. It seems obvious to me that just as the first solo is distinguished from the second via technique (edited: slide v. fretted), the two are also inextricably complimentary of one another by nature of their antithesis.
I totally agree with everything you are saying except some of the technical details. First, you say slide vs picked, but he is using a pick in both solos so you really mean slide verse fingered, as in, fingering the fret board. But he is actually using the slide in the second solo, just much more subtlety. You can really tell in the very last section when he goes down in the lower register and starts coming up the fretboard, and a few other places where you hear these really small micro slides up into the notes hes playing. I could be wrong but he did this on the second solo on a lot of versions. The first solo is really special, and its why I sometimes compare Jerry to George Harrison. If you give him a certain number of bars, or maybe one full verse repetition, he can bust out a sublime, concise and extremely melodic solo. The first solo was constructed and played right from the get go with the knowledge that it would only last a single verse, and so thats where that fantastic mind comes into play. The second solo is an exploration and he slowly builds the intensity of the solo until he comes in on the last repetition of the verse, and really hammers those notes in. Notice, this is not pyrotechnical, its not speed or flash of any kind. This kind of playing is what made Jerry so great, he was able to grab you, and pull you without relying on gimmicks of any kind. When he starts playing that second solo, he has your attention and he doesnt let it go until hes done. Truly, I think the second solo is my favorite solo of his that I have heard.
yes, I meant fretted rather than picked. thanks. i can't say that I hear the slide in the second solo after many listens. The kind of sag and sustain that he achieves between notes on the second solo especially around say the 4:58 mark seem more due to the cranked tubes than to a slide. But please point to me to a particular place because if he is using a slide on the second one, then it grows in my mind as an even more amazing entity.
if you mean the lower notes at around 6:08, could they not just be sliding the finger on the fingerboard? or do. you mean something else. Maybe it's that uncanny sustain he gets out of that travis bean...wish I had one of those

Hi saysetha. I don't think so. Jerry was heavier then. I could be wrong but i think its from 1975 actually, the outdoor show they did... Either way, it's definitely *not* from 3.20.77 Winterland...
trippy song..kinda blowing my mind right now ...row jimmy row ...gonna get there ...i don't know ...get down and row row row (also the photo is kinda trippy...dead SF 75 known acid taking show by the boys)
And this double dip is overkill perhaps, but spring '77 was his final honeymoon with the '74-onward heroin use. I won't say it's sad, it just sorta is.
SOOOO many Dead Heads love this song! I read Bill's book and he says that despite it being a slow tempo-type song, it was difficult to play....I'm not a drummer so I couldn't exactly follow how he described why it was difficult. He claims it's a slight reggae groove layered with a ballad-type style. I just don't get it. It's probably one of my least favorite G.D songs! And I love their slow ones! But this one was just a bathroom-break kind of song for me.
While you’re in the bathroom, I’m moved closer to the stage. Something about that the two solo arrangement of this song gets me. It’s one of my favorites.
Pretty dumb of me, man ... pretty dumb ... I'd like to apologize to Jerry G, Robert H, and most of all "bigmoook" .... sUCH a crunchy groove though. :)

I may not be the biggest Deadhead around, but this really is Jerry Garcia at his best for me. I can't believe how good he is here. It's incredible.

Happy 79th Birthday Jerry. Thanks more than anything for this performance.

My favorite row jimmy from the 70s. Incredible melodic second solo. You can feel the passion in each note, and it’s incredible
This will forever be my favorite 10 and a half minutes of music. Most incredible tone, solos, emotions. Thank you Jerry.
Dude, that second solo is one of the most beautiful things over ever heard. Its fucking mystical!

This version is certainly beautiful, but 1-22-78 certainly has a POWER not evinced in this one. Cornell? Hah-hardly on my charts.
It',s not cool or heady to admit liking Cornell lol. The vocals and emotion do it. Plus Phil is insane during that one.

Come back steppin' like to walk on air
Get back home where you belong
And don't you run off no more
Don't hang your head, let the two time roll
Grass shack nailed to a pine wood floor
Ask the time baby I don't know
Come back later, gonna let it show
I say row Jimmy row, gonna get there, I don't know
Seems a common way to go, get out and row, row, row, row, row
Here's a half dollar if you dare
Double twist when you hit the air

The levee doin' the do-pas-o
I say row Jimmy row, gonna get there, I don't know
Seems a common way to go, get out and row, row, row, row, row
Broken heart don't feel so bad
You ain't got half of what you thought you had
Rock you baby to and fro
Not too fast and not too slow
I say row Jimmy row, gonna get there, I don't know,
Seems a common way to go, get out and row, row, row, row, row.
That's the way it's been in town,
Ever since they tore the jukebox down
Two bit piece don't buy no more
Not so much as it done before
