People are very forgiving and apologetic for Bose, I'm not sure why. They create speakers cheaply and sell them for a much higher price. There is nothing special about Bose speakers at all. Anything that potentially tricks you into thinking they sound good is all down to a certain EQ and some DSP. The speakers themselves are made to barely cover the task. The only thing they are good at is making their dual 5" drivers create somewhat reasonable, if not slightly bloated bass and that's because of their wave-guide bass reflex port. The enclosures and speakers themselves on Bose's satellite speakers are pretty average. They don't even use Neodymium magnets. They also never have any kind of tweeter, let alone a high quality dome tweeter.
djlobb My cerwin vega xls6 i bough for new at around 245 USD, they have a 6.5 inch woofer and 1'' dome tweeter with a horn and the bass in those are amazing and i belive they hit much harder than bose crap. They also sound nice and clear with the tweeter
The thing is, BOSE engineers design amazing drivers and enclosures. After that, the BOSE penny pinchers decide how to produce them as cheap as possible. The prototypes for these sorts of things are very good.

Eighties Nut - thank you so much for posting this video; it is the only one of its kind. I am trying to *replace* the speakers in my PS28, and was immediately puzzled by the plastic bracket that stands in front of the speakers. Close inspection indicated incredibly glued together housing that would not release that plastic grill - I see that you are recommending that it just be cut out. I hate to bother you with a question since you have already put so much time into this video, but I wonder if you would be willing to help. Before I go through the trouble and expense of ordering 2 new/used subwoofer speakers for this unit from eBay, I am still puzzling over whether or not the speakers are at fault. When we are watching a movie at a medium to high volume and a 'seismic' scene comes on (like a thunderstorm for example or a stampede) the subwoofer lets out an incredibly disturbing sound sort of like a "buzzer on steroids" (It is so hard to describe, the closest I can think of is that "Eighties" game Operation when your tweezers hit the metal and it buzzes at you"). I can only imagine that it is the speakers because it is more than just vibration - the sound is being amplified. However, upon taking off the grill and just *looking* at the speakers, they look just fine. Is it possible for these type of subwoofer speakers to look fine but be defective? Or do I have some type of problem with the cabinet or amplifier? Also, if you plan to reassemble and use the unit as I do, will cutting out the plastic anti-crush thing affect the vibration of the grill or anything negative like that? Any advice you can offer would be much appreciated. Again, thank you ever so much.

I would just try and buy a new power cable or wire your own up. These speakers are cheap and are tuned and EQ'ed for the bose sub box. A car amp would most likely blow them or you would damage the amp, as bose does not use the typical amount of ohms other speakers do. And the bose subs most likely cant handle the power a car amp outputs anyway. You would be better off just buying a cheap sub for your car as it would most likely sound better.
hey have you tried taking apart the PS28 iii ? I have one with the speaker system and i can't seem to get it working, so i'd rather use the speakers and amp for a project i'm doing.
Or you can be smart and buy second hand, or get a free one that doesn't work and hook it up to the cheap second hand amp that you picked up for 10% of the price of an equivalent new one.
The sound quality isnt really subjective... they lack frequency range. But for people who don't want huge loudspeakers, they work.. and that's all those people really want.
my question is if the wires are so short how do they mount the drivers while attaching the wire, my guess is the drivers are mounted with the side of the box not put on as yet.
I have a Acoustimass 30 series II sub and I am trying to use the amp to power other speakers i have. But i cant figure out how to get a singal to it thanks to bose and their 13 pin connector. So how do i get around that?? PLZ help

+Brian Brokaw Bose doesn't play well with others. Yet another reason not to buy them. In answer to your question, I wouldn't bother without a schematic and the ability to read it but I found some stuff by doing an image search for "Bose 13 pin connector". Good luck.
Probably 50watt each wired in series for 8 ohm or 4 ohm operation. Bose doesn't list anything but people have tested and 100 watt seems their standard for subwoofer amps
so you CANT take it apart. period. These things are over engineered like an Apple imac. i remember the ridiculous amount of bolts, bars, screws and weird shaped panels to remove...
Does anybody know the power rating of those drivers? I have the same ones and built a box but I need to know how much power I can put on them. I tried with a 2*100 Watts amplifier (TDA7498), it was moving them OK, no clipping but the amp fried. I think the amp can't handle 4 ohms, the ebay seller published 4-8ohns but STMicro (TDA manufacturer) says 6-8 ohms. I'd like to try the TDA7498E, rated at 2*160W at 4 ohms
am watching this and i will say i don't think much of it as it is something to watch to help sleep sorry to be rude but be ok for some who do not know how to take a speeker out of a box
I personally love Paradigm. They've been my most favorite brand of speaker for quite some time. The downfall is the setup I want will cost me around the $6,000 price range. In the meantime, I'm happy with my Klipsch Reference series as my home theater setup and my 2.1 Paradigm setup for my music room.
What manufacturer in their right mind would design a speaker system where you can't remove the drivers without cutting away part of the box? Really poor design choice. But I'm not surprised because it's Bose.
Same thing. You have to judge everything by price or value. A Honda Accord might be a good car for $30.000 but if it cost $300,000 it would be considered crap compared to others of comparable price. Bose sounds a little better than computer speakers but they are not priced as such.
you got a slightly good point but when you make a statement about a product, you cant exaggerate the word crap. if it sound above the average even if the material is cheap then it serve its function as advertised. just because they used cheap material doesn't make it cheap. quality come in all size, shape and material. corvette used fiberglass its cheaper than carbon fiber and more expensive than plastic but people still complain about its cheap material. the only valid statement is the interior. its a sport car not a luxury. being fiber glass because its still lighter than aluminium. a good question is, whats the difference between cheap material and more expensive one? i seen paper speaker on a car last more than the car itself and thats debatable. its the result that matter. if you engineered it correctly thats quality right there.
_Normally_ "BOSE" is supposed to be super quality to bad, that these speakers are NOT magnetically shilded ( even 80 € 2.1 Computer Speakers from Creative [ like SBS-390 back in 2005 ] are magnetically shielded) What about an electronics tear-down ? ( my Creative SBS-390 lasted from mid 2005 until a mouth ago [ 10.5 years ] - one speaker [ 4 Ohm 5 Watt] membrane now defective, defective speaker replaced with Elta 3500 diffusion-radio [ 4 Ohm 10 Watt] with defective electronics )
The speaker cables are very small. Sure, they are not long. But depending on Power ect i think it is not far away that the cables will affect the sound quality in a bad way. But just guessing. I mean Bose is not that quality anymore. You more pay for the name Bose. back in the day it maybe was a good and high quality brand. But that was the past....
+vortex222 They actually can. If this cable would really he too thin. like headphone cables the resistance of the cable is too high to deliver any power to the speaker. the bass cant be played and will be distorted.
Why ask why It is not ours to reason why. No, it's because we used to be a direct repair facility. In most cases if the amp was not worth repairing or was replaced we got stuck with the box and speakers and many many cases a bad amp so we would tear-down the box for the speakers as we tried in the beginning to sell the box with the speakers with no luck and we also started running out of room. At some point we started giving them to local second hand stores until they told us no more we cant sell them or get rid of them fast enough. Around 2008 we started filling-up garbage bin loads weekly.
The power supply commonly dies - some power drive transistors, surface mount resistors, a chip, few caps need replacing. Annoying to fix and of course Bose probably wouldn't sell you a PSU module, or it'd be silly expensive.
6 1/2 imch driver ??? i dont think so ? probly 5 1/4 i used to like bose but like a lot of companies they cut corners charging all lot of money for less quality .
You do realize that what you've wrote is complete bullshit right? How does a long throw 5.25" woofer (not the ones that Bose used for this "sub" btw) equal to the cone area of an 8" sub? Movement alone doesn't compensate
these arnet as bad as some white van speaker. i love the cubes cause of there size. but there acoustimass [ not a subwoofer] doesnt sound that great. so i have 5 double cubes 1 powered acoustimass and a 15 powered sub. sounds really good. everyone compares other speaker that are much larger. yes bose is pricey. i just wait and get them off craigslist for next to nothing.
I was regularly accosted by the "White Van" speaker sellers in the 80s In Memphis, TN. I never stopped to see what they were. I assumed "stolen". I was using AR-3a speakers from Acoustic Research at the time.
They're just as good as most other drivers you will find in any HT sub . They simply sell it for more because of a slightly different design and then the marketing.

Bro do you mind telling me what type of fuse is on a lifestyle 28 sub? I took it apart and lost the fuse.
its not so much as the speaker its really just the box it has a bunch of chambers that the air moves threw and it sounds really good
they have a loud bass dude except the cerwin vega cls 215 6 15 12 15s 12s and 10 has deep bass
Still Acoustic Research (AR)....
Those cheap looking speakers are tuned to that enclosure, what are you doing with them exactly?
Tuned ? lol
@@joeygonzo I think I'm asking the same thing.
Hi, I have one of these unfortunately I lost my power cable. I plan to use the speakers in my car, can these subs be used with a car.amplifier?
Thanks
Bose 40% marketing 10% sound quality and 50% overpriced
exactly
Yes exactly same as JBL
JBL's professional line is quite good, the rest of their stuff is meh for sure.
RevToTheRedline in go-9_
The sound quality isnt really subjective... they lack frequency range.
PLZ help
+Brian Brokaw Hi, without the schematic it would be hit and miss for the most part, however I am sure if you opened it up you may be able to follow the traces to decipher your dilemma. Let me know how it goes. The Eighties Nut
+Brian Brokaw Bose doesn't play well with others. Yet another reason not to buy them. In answer to your question, I wouldn't bother without a schematic and the ability to read it but I found some stuff by doing an image search for "Bose 13 pin connector". Good luck.
Are the woofers wired in parallel or series?
Parallel sir
nice
is there a way to reuse the amp for using it with other speakers?? how so?
can the fm tuner be used manually to change radio stations? If so How? my remote stopped working on my lifestyle 18
Wow 6" sub? what kind a bass do you get out of this, the woofer on my bookshelve speaker is bigger than this.
Surprisingly a LOTTTT of bass
It's not just size; the excursion, distortion, box design, room placement and room treatment all make a difference.
It's actually quite a bit. I have the acoustimas 6 with only one of these drivers and still rattles the walls in my condo.
what is the sub, what are the specs and werecan i find one. and a box for one????
what is the power handling of those subs?
Probably 50watt each wired in series for 8 ohm or 4 ohm operation.
Bose doesn't list anything but people have tested and 100 watt seems their standard for subwoofer amps
00:01 ohhh this is must be love :) but i dont have yet :(
why would you need to take it apart
this is killing it. 😂😂😂
is it possible to buy those speakers online?
Does anyone know the driver size of the Bose bass module 500 subwoofer? How many watts?
no highs, no lows, must be bose. or Bose, better sound through marketing.
Bring Other Sound Equipment.
Umm nigga. This is a subwoofer.
I tried to conec on my car not support my implifier..
I don't know... My Cerwin vega TS-42 sub and its crown 6002 xti amp could crush that and probably cost less.
yes and theyre 3 times the size, idiot
all this acoustic fuckery at a premium price.
PS28ii compatible to PS28iii?
so you CANT take it apart. period. These things are over engineered like an Apple imac. i remember the ridiculous amount of bolts, bars, screws and weird shaped panels to remove...
Keep the stuffing too XD
So many better alternatives to that junk: Monitor Audio, B&W, JM Lab, KEF, Tannoy, Cabasse, ...
And Genelec
I personally love Paradigm. They've been my most favorite brand of speaker for quite some time. The downfall is the setup I want will cost me around the $6,000 price range. In the meantime, I'm happy with my Klipsch Reference series as my home theater setup and my 2.1 Paradigm setup for my music room.
KEF Q1 is all we need !!! And 30cm sub ...
Klipsch RF7 for the win :-)
What manufacturer in their right mind would design a speaker system where you can't remove the drivers without cutting away part of the box? Really poor design choice. But I'm not surprised because it's Bose.
Hello sir can you help me please
Sure?
bose is not crap. its over price.
30k for an accord is still overpriced :P
Bose is good but you cannot beat Bang and Olufsen. :)
Jeremy Clarkson
harman kardon ?
Klipsch Bowers and Wilkins
WILSON AUDIO
PSB speakers.
ok those are the tweeters where is the sub woofer on that thing
same speaker on nissan maxima 90;s
Dopo questi video dimostrativi il mio Lifestile 8 varrà 50€ (euro)
I am not sure?
Yaaaa I heard the gas came out when he opened it.and the smell tooo......farrrrt
I should have captured it to use for a build...
many say that bose is good ... so the finish. But for me it's just cheaper shit for a lot of money.
agree
Dominik Lux yeah i know
_Normally_ "BOSE" is supposed to be super quality
to bad, that these speakers are NOT magnetically shilded ( even 80 € 2.1 Computer Speakers from Creative [ like SBS-390 back in 2005 ] are magnetically shielded)
What about an electronics tear-down ?
( my Creative SBS-390 lasted from mid 2005 until a mouth ago [ 10.5 years ] - one speaker [ 4 Ohm 5 Watt] membrane now defective, defective speaker replaced with Elta 3500 diffusion-radio [ 4 Ohm 10 Watt] with defective electronics )
There is no point to magnetically shield drivers these days let alone subwoofer drivers which sit on the floor.
what was the point of this?
Video is good but too long
Thanks. I will try to get straight to the point next time as I tend to always want to explain too much.
The magnets are not even shielded!
For sale
No, not after what I did to it. I opened the box on its side.
Don’t get why you are hacking up this subwoofer?
A 5.25" long throw driver is the equivalent of a standard 8" and there are two of them so.
Your math is simply blowing my mind.
Shut up Jeremy, you know nothing about cars lol
You do realize that what you've wrote is complete bullshit right?
How does a long throw 5.25" woofer (not the ones that Bose used for this "sub" btw) equal to the cone area of an 8" sub?
Movement alone doesn't compensate
dude why you do this? are you crazy? ahaha pls stop lol
Actually that's what my parents used to always tell me. "STOP ARE YOU CRAZY" hehe...
Why would Bose sell their products cheaper than they can?
how many watts are they?
50 watt each
Jeremy Clarkson thanks Jeremy Clarkson! ;)
these arnet as bad as some white van speaker. i love the cubes cause of there size. but there acoustimass [ not a subwoofer] doesnt sound that great. so i have 5 double cubes 1 powered acoustimass and a 15 powered sub. sounds really good. everyone compares other speaker that are much larger. yes bose is pricey. i just wait and get them off craigslist for next to nothing.
I was regularly accosted by the "White Van" speaker sellers in the 80s In Memphis, TN. I never stopped to see what they were. I assumed "stolen". I was using AR-3a speakers from Acoustic Research at the time.
damn i had mt dew. its not goin to work :(
Nije mi jasno zašto neko mora da razvali ovako nešto?
bose = MIT , the speakers do a 20% of the sound (bass) isn'tthe top best quality speakers , becaus bose works on the box , and psycoacustic ;)
They're just as good as most other drivers you will find in any HT sub . They simply sell it for more because of a slightly different design and then the marketing.
eso no se abre d' rompiendo
