DIY BOSE Subwoofer Repurpose / Rebuild

  • We teardown and repurpose a BOSE Acoustimass 6 Series II subwoofer that we bought from Craig's List, turning it into a usable and powerful 2.1 front firing powered subwoofer capable of also powering two decent sized satellite speakers with premium sound.
BOSE Acoustimass Surround Sound Systems are popular, and are not cheap systems when they are new. There are many of these expensive systems out there that have been broken up or have been replaced with something more simple or less expensive, they are out there and you can find them cheap! The Acoustimas 6 has two very nice 8 ohm Dual Voice Coil DVC subwoofers inside that pump out a ton of bass and give you some flexibility of powering them as a 4 or 8 ohm system.
In this example we bought a BOSE sub woofer for $20! I went to my new favorite audiophile store, Parts Express and purchased a Dayton Audio MCA2250E Class D Plate Amplifier with 2.1 Surround capability for $65 and a pair of Dayton Audio B452 4-1/2" Bookshelf Speakers for $27 to make a cool DIY desktop system to use in my office.
Along with taking apart the BOSE Acoustimax 6 Series 2 subwoofer and replacing the electronics, I also had to remove the vinyl veneer that was coming apart and applied new iron on Band-it black melamine to refinish the outside of the particle board and replace the vinyl covering that was peeling off. Trimming melamine, as I find out is not as simple as it looks!
This DIY Project was pretty easy and anyone who can use a screwdriver, a hand saw and a pair of wire cutters can likely follow my lead and do this project. All in all it turned out pretty cool. It's a TON more than my home office can handle and the bass shakes the whole second floor of our home! The BOSE subwoofer has a new life, looks great and it worked out better than I expected. A cool rainy day project indeed!
Enjoy and I hope this helps!

Those drivers are 2ohm per coil, so your pulling a 0.5ohm load from that amp, lucky we didnt see the magic smoke come out, great mod as there is plenty of these old Acustimass modules kicking about and they are pretty good for boomy base, but by removing the internal crossover, you have removed the safety bulbs that are onboard to protect the drivers from blowing, I know as I have done a similar mod, you can overdrive the 5" drivers pretty easy and not know due to the bandpass enclosure.

I was using a voltmeter on three different series speaker from the acoustimass line. They are actually like most other home theatre speakers; 5.6-6.7 ohms rating. Not all Bose speakers are 2ohm.

True, they seem to use a large variety depending on the year, model and series, I have some 1ohm Bose Bass Drivers here as well, but these are usually found in the Automotive bass modules, and I have one that is ridiculous, 0.5ohm rated, I think that is from the Chev Volt, the newer AM10 with transmission line setup are 4ohm and most of the older AM5's are around 6 Ohm@@dannylewandowski2822

That was entertaining. Like a cool version of This Old Sub. And just when I thought a loud version of There's a Tear in my Beer or Knights in White Satin was inevitable.... you bring something to really test the sub to the table. Hats off to you sir... You've done a fine job.

Are the coils from one woofer 8 or 16 Ohms ?
If they are 8 Ohms after you connect the coils in parallel from one woofer you get 4 Ohms woofer. After you connect two woofers in parallel you get 2 Ohms and it's not "healthy" for the amp.

Nice mods, safety first, you must test the final impedance of the speaker before hooking up to amplifier.

Well done!. For $102, plus the melamine, you now probably have the best powered desktop system around under $250 and other than the sub-driver, it's "new"!. Another option someone could consider for a similar project is to use exohyde or some other speaker cabinet paint, which would be quicker and easier than the melamine.
This makes me want to do something else with my desktop setup (Currently M-Audio AV-30 powered speakers - they are "ok" for this purpose, though completely blown away by your setup) but I'll be returning to the office in July, so not much point.

I picked up one of these a couple years ago at the local charity shop. It is in excellent working condition, such as it is. I bought a Fose mini amp with 100-watt, one-channel output for sub which I will run off a Fiio DAC from iMac digital out. Want to pair it with Monitor Audio Bronze One speakers for my desktop. Not quite sure how to wire it. I guess I'll jump the sub out to both inputs on the Bose and run the speakers from the two 50-watt stereo channels of the amp. I'm hoping for passable sound at best here.

The reason for two voice coils is to preserve the integrity of the stereo signal on the passthrough while still providing a signal to the subs.

I have a acoustimas series ll and it has 3 subs in it but problem is the foam surrounds are crumbling and no way of getting them out due to the sealed chambers. I bought them in 2003. Don’t know why they wouldn’t use rubber surround.

Because Bose is super cheap - but at the same time really expensive. Really, they're business model is to use the cheapest parts, assembled in the cheapest ways, and market the sh*t out of it to lure in as many untrained and ignorant "consumers" as they can. It's mainly worked really well because of the lack of knowledge of their customers of what good sound quality and performance actually sounds like.

I have on old lg 5.1 surround system. It was cheap and for pc. I dont really have the space to do a proper surround system right now. I got presonus eris 3.5 bookshelf speakers that have bluetooth capability. If i were to harvest the sub from the lg system would i need an amplifier board with bluetooth or would the eris speakers bluetooth work. Im thinking they wont but i figured id ask just in case. I mean i know the eris speakers would play but im wondering of the sub would too.
