Thanks for the honest review. Given the hefty price and cheaper/better alternatives like emulation or Mister FPGA solutions, the user experience and compatibility have to be improved a lot to justify the asking price in my opinion.
Well I'll reiterate what I said previously in summary: nifty device but for what's being offered should have been an fpga solution. Especially when MiSTer offers more than this by far for the same price, sans snazzy peripherals. And again appreciate you going into hardware details this time around, helps people make an informed decision.
I love the hardware and wish I could justify the price, but alternatives are just as good for me. Honestly, have entertained thoughts of buying a real system, but the price and the lack of reliability are a no-go. Nothing in the 80s beats an X68k. It's just too good.
There was a recent announcement for an official mini console for the NEC PC-8801mkIISR called the Pasocom Mini PC-8801mkIISR. It was officially announced recently in August 2024. It is going to be made by Dempa Micomsoft (the same company that made the Cyber Stick for the Sega Genesis Mini 2).
I can see why this isn't something they're interested in releasing worldwide. The X68000 wasn't a big deal outside of Japan, and a lot of the games are things you can get on other platforms. Especially the arcade games which are now nearly perfectly emulated on modern consoles.
The draw for many of us that were old enough to know what it was, is that you can finally own it in some form. It also has enough exclusive software to make it worth while for those willing to give it a shot. I'm starting to think that Zuiki is simply waiting for the right time to introduce an English version of the product. You may be right that it never comes West, but I honestly think there is a market for it. Not huge, but enough to warrant a small release.

Thanks for the update. Since I am not interested in getting the most expensive version (with the mini monitor) there is a decent chance I could get one, although it is going to be more expensive. Though, this is one system I definitely want to get.
Cybercore is cool insect-based, TATE shooter that I really loved on the TurboGrafx-16, growing up. There is an upgraded port of the game for the X68000! It looks better than the TG16 version by quite a bit.

Any update? Did firmware ever fix the non-working games? Has HDD support been added? Do fan translations work? Had much success with games that are more than two discs? Sorry to hit you up with so many questions but it is hard to find much information about this product. I am thinking about picking one up, would you recommend it?
The video here didn't do well so I canceled any follow ups. No, I would not recommend it. It's a novelty that's much to expensive. It still has most of the problems mentioned in the video.

@@kur1su74 Hi, remember me? I downloaded new files of Cotton from Archive and tried to get them to work on my X68000 emulator in Retropie. Once again, the music plays, but it just hangs on the "Electronic Arts Presents" splash screen and the music plays infinitely. Pressing the buttons on the controller does nothing. The romset my friend hooked me up with uses .m3u files to play the games, not hdf. Most games work on the emulator, save for a very few. What could I be doing wrong?
I watched your videos on and emulated a few games. I absolutely love the games on the X68000. It's like a souped cross between TG-16 and the Genesis. Too bad retroarch emulator for it is garbage. No save states makes it impossible to use.

😅 could you be more wrong? context is the key. if you look at the games in the eyes of someone in 2023 then yes, it doesn't look special. why would I want to play a port of an arcade game when I can play the actual arcade game? but when those ports came out they were the closest thing you could get to playing the arcade game without owning the arcade game. the x68k came out in 87, in the west it would have come up against the Amiga, ST, c64, spectrum, amstrad CPC, master system and NES. now compare the games on those machines with the x68k and tell me it's overrated with a straight face.

The graphics on this thing for the time are unbelievable. I couldn't even imagine what kid me would have thought seeing these at home.

Cotton is one of the X68k games I could not get to run on Retropie. It gets to the loading music and just goes on and on without starting the game.
I have it running on my Pi 400 using RetroPi so it must be an issue with either settings or source files.

The Sharp X68000 is indeed a far impressive Japanese home computer than the MSX2. Just looking at its games just shows that how much it can deliver.

I'm not sure I follow. The games have some English in them but most of what system itself offers is in Japanese.
