    Having seen Cindy Lee live and up close in Toronto few years back, I can tell you that Flegel's Cindy Lee voice is the result of vocal processing on the mic, probably a simple pitchbender situation. Cindy Lee's tragic girl-group persona, drawing from the Supremes and Asian pop, but also noisier influences like Japan's Les Rallizes Denudes, is definitely one of the more interesting inventions in independent music in the past decade... (I was a massive fan of Women, and have followed Flegel's output since the band's sad demise -- not for everyone; definitely comparable to Sonic Youth, in their uncanny ability to find beauty in dissonance -- but rewarding to those seeking adventurous sonic terrain...)

    The best album of this year. Best tracks on here are "kingdom come", "if you hear me crying" and "24/7 heaven"

      Please react to these! Modern miniature masterpieces. These two songs you've reacted to are good but also just scratching the surface of this brilliant record

    I'd never heard of Cindy Lee before this album either. "Kingdom Come" was my favorite, might be my favorite song I've heard this year so far.

    In answer to your quandry, yes that is Patrick very convincingly singing the female voice. He performs in drag live. He is phenomenal as is his entire album and what's more, he also plays all the guitar parts himself.

      Listened to it twice yesterday. I think these two tracks are indicative of the album as a whole. It kept my attention and struck me as a strange forgotten 60's album you might have found in a dusty thrift store bin.
      I could have used a bit more dynamic range at times, but I enjoyed the brashness of the music.

    Also, it's considered a part of a genre called hypnogogic (I could be spelling that wrong but it's close).

    • @wallbangerreactions
      @wallbangerreactions  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I've run into that word. Maybe Ariel Pink reaction? Not sure.

    • @captainmoondog1947
      @captainmoondog1947 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      yup, it is Hypnagogic Pop and Cindy Lee had already played with this kind of sound on her previous album "What's Tonight to Eternity", where she does this style of Hypnagogic Pop with Noise, and on Diamond Jubilee she replaces the Noise (or reduces it) in exchange for ambition, I feel that this album plays with more sounds like Psychedelic Pop, Art Rock, Alt Country, Traditional Pop. Amazing album, really great!
