The Volvo looks much better on the outside and the inside.
It's been a while since our last comparison, so we figured we'd put the all-new Audi Q5 up against the also all-new 2018 Volvo XC60! What do you guys think? I'm still torn, because these two are both absolutely stunning luxury crossovers...

We have spent the last 2 weeks SUV shopping, we have test driven everything from Chevy's up to BMW's, this past weekend among the SUV's we test drove were the Audi and the Volvo, I can honestly say, there is no competition, the Volvo is better in every regard than the Audi, in fact it's the first one I have gotten out of the test drive and told the wife "this is the one", it's a fantastic vehicle.
My wife and I are doing exactly the same thing. Driven all the top brands including Mercedes, Range Rover, Jaguar, Lexus and the Volvo. The ONLY one that thoroughly impressed me and left me with an impression I just can't shake is the Volvo XC60 Inscription. I thought the 4 cyl engine was going to be a problem. It definitely is NOT. Also, beautiful interior! We drove the Lexus after the Volvo and it is positively FULL of buttons and clutter by comparison. The RX350 is a great vehicle. It may have Love-it or Hate-it styling, but you simply cannot fault the fit/finish and reliability. However, when it comes to pure style, the new XC60 Inscription beats them all hands down!
We got the XC60 Inscription yesterday too. we had driven all the top brands, including Audi, Range Rover and X5 BMW. The best value and most features was hands down the VOLVO, very happy.

Audi front better looking? You're kidding right? Fuel range? ...that slight difference is not worth a point to Audi. In that case give 2 points to Volvo for the much higher engine power. Another 2 points for the MUCH better looking Volvo rear end! Audi interiors are tops (I've had 4) but the tacked on central monitor looks like an after thought, and it's not touch screen, so the distracting knob and myriad of button controls. I do like that Audi maintained the redundant buttons for hvac and seat heat, etc. The recent Volvo's have performed much better than the Audi's in this class on the small front overlap test, and will continue to dominate here, so another 2 points.😉 The Volvo is made in Sweden, the Audi is made in Mexico. Volvo is a runaway winner here, extra points or not.
I appreciate your very concise side-by-side comparison between these two direct competitors. Other sites are comparing this luxury minded Volvo Inscription with a fully loaded QS5 with sport suspension, big V6 turbo, bigger wheels with flashy paint job. Not the fairest comparo.
I agree, it's gotta be hard to do a point system. The weights I apply to one things value will be radically different than for another persons requirements. What I might think of as trivial may be the make or break for someone else, and that same point of concern can be completely handled differently in another trim level. It's hard to review cars!
Well you failed to mention that, in Europe, the Volvo XC60 has been the official best-seller in the segment, and that it has outsold the Audi Q5 by quite some margin here for many years now.

European sales in July 2017, Volvo sold 10,263 XC60s and Audi sold 6,141 Q5s. Europeans are much smarter than Americans. :-)
But these two are definitely the best SUVs in their class.

(1) Comfort/seats were better than Audi. (2) in Southern California, the VOLVO GETS YOU HOV LANE STATUS whereas Audi does NOT and that’s huge here (3) I’m second generation Swedish 🇸🇪 so ...

Volvo's engine that is similar to the Audi's is the T5 with 254hp, not the T6, that's why Volvo looses here a bit in terms of fuel consumption. But, there is no similar motor to compare to Volvo's T6 in this case.

I've owned both Volvos and Audis, and I'm squarely on the Audi side because of Volvo's horrendous reliability. We replaced tie rods and ball joints in my wife's Volvo at 20,000 miles, and again at 32,000 miles. The Volvo dealer tried to blame the roads. Nonsense - our other cars, driven in identical conditions, have always gone close to 100,000 miles before needing suspension repairs.

i have a 2018 audi q5 and have put about 2,400 miles on it. I had Volvo's for 22 years and while i really liked them they tended to break down after a couple of years. The Audi is fun to drive and has all the features that i need.

most of people say VOLVO is better, but why in real market, AUDI sells much more than VOLVO???
These are all emotional guys supporting a brand… for some reason Audi users are less active in TH-cam compared to Volvos, BMW fans.

It's so refreshing to watch a review that's about the cars instead of the presenter.
All good except that fuel efficiency is counted twice in MPG and fuel range, also rear window shade is weighted the same as a 4 zone climate control. Over all not a bad comparison though.
Volvo is way better!
Q5 styling inside and out was less appealing than the XC60 for me. The Q7 is stunning though. I went for the XC60 Inscription with more extras. Get it in a month.
I wish Audi would integrat the screen into the dash instead of it looking like it was just an after thought. I was leaning Volvo until there were no controls other than the touch screen. Odd, you can't use a cell while driving but you need to control everything from the car's screen.
I'd give the Audi the edge in performance with the S and R-Line variants. I don't think you mentioned Volvo's available 4 corner air suspension which greatly improves the ride quality. The outgoing XC60 was Volvo's best selling vehicle in North America and I think this new one will sell just as well. The Q5 and XC60 will definitely go head to head and it's almost a coin toss which one is better. BMW has a new X3 for 2018, but I'm sure the list of standard features will be short since they typically nickel and dime buyers on option upgrades like backup cameras and navigation systems. Ditto for Mercedes as well with the GLC. The Jaguar F-Pace is an interesting competitor and the upcoming Land Rover/Range Rover Velar might raise the bar even higher in this class.

Good job comparing. These are the two vehicles that I am comparing and will buy one of them, Just not sure which one. The Volvo XC60 is pretty scarce around here. Dealer inventory is very low and limited color choices. Since I am trading my A6 I will probably end up with the Q5
JR Moritz That's kinda like saying "Whelp, since the one shoe is already covered in dog poo I may as well get the other foot in." The Audi Q5 seats feel cheap and stiff compared to the XC60, the Sensus infotainment system is incredibly intuitive after a few minutes of use, and the headroom, leg room and foot room in the first and second row of the Volvo is much more spacious than the Audi. Just sayin'.
go for the Volvo. it's a better all-around vehicle, and you will probably end up appreciating the extra warranty coverage time plus the added luxury that it offers. i would also suggest test driving both, and asking the people at the Volvo dealership if they are offering any deals for out-of-brand trades since i know they did that for VWs.

XC60 is a beautiful car, nicer interior and has way more power.It also has many extras over the Q5, included in the price. Soo, it's a much better car and a better buy.

I know both cars, I took the Audi, it is the better car. No Question. I hate touchpads and the one in the Volvo will always be full of fingerprints, prepare to clean it a lot. Quality of the Volvo is shaky and the resale will be much better with the Audi. I thought about the BMW X3 too but the Audi was the winner for me, Volvo was third place.

I have been a vw Audi guy my whole life and now looking at Volvo . Just tired of all of vw failures bad engines bad interior failures after a few years bad transmissions electrical issues stay away from the Audi I have a yard full of them 4 q5 all dead with bad engines 2 a3 just junk go Volvo

You do know that the Macan and the Audi are built by the same company and that many of the parts are the same? You also know that Audi places a full 10 spots higher on the Consumer Reports reliability rankings?

I had a 1999 Audi A4 and a 1998 Volvo XC70. The Volvo is still in the driveway, drives me to work everyday, the Audi is in the junkyard. Just sayin.

I had a 1999 A4 as well and it was a lemon...couldn't wait to dump it. I've had the 2018 xc60 for 2 months and it's AMAZING.

Great comparison. I just bought a 2020 XC60 after a lot of comparison shopping, especially against the Q5. I’d say most of these comparisons still hold up with the current models. I know looks are highly subjective, but I much prefer the elegant front grill of the Volvo to the Audi. And the interior design of the Volvo is hands down better than the Audi in my opinion. I do love that Google Earth display on the Audi, but the Sensus is by far my favorite infotainment system. Thanks for the excellent head-to-head here. Makes me feel even better about my purchase. 🙂

What it comes down to is whether you prioritize sportiness or safety. For Sedans, I'd get an Audi every time (and I do). But anyone looking to an SUV for sportiness is fooling himself, they're much too top-heavy for things like drifting and autocross. Why bother with the excess power? The Volvo really is the logical choice here.
That 9" touch screen is very nice but I wonder how it will look after it is covered with finger prints! I hate all the finger prints on my table.... always cleaning it.

Volvo has obviously come a long ways. If it is that close, my choice is Audi. Am I the only one who thinks "soccer Mom" when I see a Volvo?
Evidently yes... by the numbers Volvo's current market is younger and more affluent than their German rivals. Volvo pretty much pulled off the redesign that Buick tried to do. The difference is execution compared to just saying things in commercials.
Wonderful comparison video, thank you! One thing I'd like to add which I discovered while test driving them both is that the Volvo doesn't have a CD player anymore. I was told, however, one is available if you order your car through their overseas program. They put it in the center console. Audi on the other hand has tucked one up in their glove box. It would be a little hard to use but it's there in case you need one. I know they are considered outdated but some of us have a hard time letting them go. :-)

I’m a VAG owner (only) since the mid 1970’s (new one every 2/3yrs). VAG quality is not what it used to be. Still good, but others have caught up. I’ve looked at both these to buy next. One thing you miss is that you can’t (at the moment) get a PHEV drivetrain for the Q5 - a huge plus for my next purchase.
XC60 was a bestseller in the segment with the PREVIOUS model in Europe the whole time, until this was realeased! topseller, with a 7:ish years old model!

I own the XC60. When I was shopping around, I watched a comparison crash test of both the Q5 and XC60 much like the same way this video was produced with dual shots. Anyways when you see the interior of both the Audi Q5 and Volvo XC0 in the SUV rollover test in the Audi, you can literally see items start to detach themselves from the dash board and strike the crash dummies in the face and torso, whereas the Volvo, the crash dummies are virtually unscathed from any flying debris. Look at how the Audi just simply breaks into a million pieces to when slammed in the wall as well.

Volvo's problem is primarily it's big depreciation even after the first year alone. It's a boon however to used car buyers who desires a Swedish vehicle engineered and built specially for cold climate.
How in the living fuck could you prefer the front of the Audi? It is the least attractive feature

755w B&O vs 1400w B&W~ I think Volvo should take a point there..
You may have skipped past it, but at the beginning I discussed the reason for disregarding the sound systems (keeps the two at equivalent prices, since the B&W cost $3,200 on it own).
XC60 has the 1100w version with 15 speakers, XC90 has 1400w with 19 speakers. This confusion was made in the beginning in my country as well, then they changed the info after I let them know. Anyway, it seems that it's a bit more powerful with a bit less speakers, but I can tell you, they both sound so great.

In the volvo forward seats are great but rear seats are not up to premium cars standard! There are simply not adjustable! True comfort does not come from a wooden panel- it comes from ride comfort (damping of the suspension), low noise ( 4 cyl. engines ...wrrrr), comfortable yet ergonomic seats ...those on volvos are simply stunning but....the rear are adjustable! On a car for such money? I can even have it on BMW X1! Toyota RAV 4, surely in Audi Q5 and in a few more like Skoda Kodiak!
Honored, Q5 2.0 tdi since the beginning of the sale in 2009 the price was in Serbia 35000e, and the price of the current model with the same engine is 45000e?
I would rather have the Jaguar F-Pace instead.
