Becky, I hope you read this comment. I have been watching your channel for awhile and want to seriously "THANK YOU". For the last 5 years, I have only left my house or have been outside for doctor's appointments, a funeral and times I have been in the hospital. Watching your channel is helping motivate me to want to be outside again. Thank you so much for reminding me of how much I love to garden and to be outside in the beautiful weather. You are motivating me to get healthy so I can have a garden again. May God Bless You!!

I just bought a house in February and I've been working on the interior so far. But I am wandering around in my backyard making plans for landscaping projects in the next couple of years. At 68, I am definitely going to do raised beds for everything. Your gardens looked so pretty last year with flowers mixed into the veggies and you have talked about that again for this year. I've definitely decided to add herbs, flowers, and veggies in a combination that will make all my beds pretty to look at and fruitful. Thank you for inspiring and teaching this "old Nebraska gardener" some new tricks.

It's always good to test and retest, because the bi-product is going into your family's body.

I personally buy my starts form a small local grower who grows a lot of heirloom plants organically. I get punnets for $3 which usually contain about 10 plants. It’s autumn now so I have a winter garden in which over here is brassicas, beets, carrots, peas, greens. Excited to see yours in the ground.

I'm envious of your garden! I live in the SF Bay Area and am currently "turning my waiting room into a classroom" (I love Jess @ R&R Farm but it's something I've said since I was a kid but no idea where I learned the phrase). Hope you are getting your beds filled this weekend! You and your baby will end up spending so much time bonding in the garden! Our son spent hours with my MIL in her garden & I wish I was both able and into gardening when he was little!
I started gardening in LOTS if containers and grow bags last spring and grew to LOVE it! This winter, I designed two tall raised beds (attached to a partial or faux pergola) around my front yard paver patio. My hubby and I (w/Dad's help on the pergola erection) did all the work to sand, cut, and organically seal them. We also put in 1 short 6'x4' on the side of front yard and 2 short 4'x4' raised beds on either side of the pavered walkway that connects our patio to the sidewalk. It's been a slow but steady process over the last two months but all that is left is running water lines (tape) and putting down a grid (using halved vinyl corner rounds w/ holes) so I can give square foot gardening a try in some of my raised beds. My plants are nearly hardened off too so only a few more days until I get to start putting things in their final homes!

I have a permanent compost yard that is attached to my chicken yard. I also have about 100 ft of a chunnel (chicken tunnel) for the chickens to be able to run and feel like they are free ranging. Having a separate compost yard that is completely enclosed in 2x4 welded fencing. Chickens are happy. Get black gold. And my veggie garden is safe! If I want to let the chickens in the garden, I just move the chunnel. The chunnel is the 2x4 welded fence. I used the 5ft tall femce. Folded at the 2ft and 3ft. Creating a U shaped tunnel for the chicken to run around under. It’s a win win.

Raney´s at Homestead Rescue made a nice and simple solution for the birds in one program. They took a mesh net, maybe what I think you name "cattle fence", bend it to make a half circle. like a tunnel, and secured it to the ground. That would be an easy way to get a pretty big secured yard for them as big as you want to do it. They can not fly out into the garden and they are also safe from flying predators.
Your garden starts to look more and more stunning! There is also one thing you have to think about when it comes to soil for growing in: the contents are also important due to where you live and what you want to grow. For example, for me as living way up north with a lot of snow (often 3 feet) on my beds, it is important to have a permeable soil in my beds (at least for those with garlic and other things sown in the autumn) because it can be very vet in springtime. Sandy soil is underrated as a growing medium, you can grow in pure sand if you want to. The important thing is to feed a bed with soil is to feed it, preferable with cover crop (grass clipping is great for that). I have found it easier to get nice carrots, parsnips and similar veggies in sandy soil than in a rich soil with a lot of more heavy soil. So everyone have to consider what to put in their beds due to where they live, thinking of temperature, moist, wind and what they want to grow most of when it comes to veggies. Maybe it is more easy to have a more sandy soil and give complements than struggling with a heavy soil for half of the veggies...
For cabbages; sow them outside in trays and they start to grow when they feel it is time to grow. I seed mine in the middle of april, shovel some snow over the trays and forget about them, just checking them later on so they do not dry out before putting them into the beds.

We're always brand new gardeners! We carry what we've learned and pick up so much information and learn from our mistakes and progresses. Every year new things come out, we can take what we need to apply to our gardens.
My father worked for a company, Nachurs. He would take samples from farmers' fields and find out what nutrients were needed.
He then sprayed the proper amounts needed onto the fields. It sounds like the great company you found. Very useful. I can not WAIT to get in the garden!
Your garden plan is wonderful, it looks like it's going to be so efficient for you. Good job!! ❤

I want to thank you, for letting me live vicarious through you. I'm not able to do any gardening right now. I'm learning so much from you, hopefully I can put it to use someday. I tell my husband that I want to be like you when I grow up. We get a laugh, (we're in our 60's). We love to watch the chickens, they are good supervisors lol, they make such cute noises too.

I guess every extension office much be different. Ours gives results in a bar graph and tells you where the sample falls in that range. If it’s outside the range is has an explanation of what needs to be done to correct it.
I love the idea of supporting small business so I’m definitely giving Redmond a try. Thanks for the recommendation!

When you do get to making your hen house/run. Use that old chain link fencing on the ground then cover with soil, etc... This way you'll keep foxes from digging under the hen house/run!

I just finished filling my newly built garden beds today and it is so exciting.. for family reasons I haven’t had a garden the last two years and this year we went all in mostly because I have been watching your videos all along and had to go for it this year.. thank you for always sharing what you learn. I had many seedling successes this year as well that Vermont compost is great! Only big fail is my tomato starts I will see if I can salvage any tomorrow... happy planting!

At the UW Wisconsin system, the soil results tell you if the nutrients are high or low. They also recommend the fertilizer to use.

Wow! Chicken manure is great for fertilizer. Becky this will be a lot of work. I hope you get someone to help you care for all your harvests when they grow in. Fish fertilizer is also great! A raised bed mix is the best!
