    i know you like to be frugal. The point of chitting potatoes is that you can buy fewer potatoes and by chitting them, you grow many, many more. I bought 8 russets. Cut each based on it having a number of eyes and planted. Versus planting one whole potat. Doing that, I planted 16 seed potatoes.This method yields more plants and so more potatoes at less upfront cost.

  • @TheEmbrio

    The microplastics and fumes means i’m never going to willingly bring in pollutant to my garden. Plus weeds end up coming up in the holes or rooting as the plastic gets dirt or deteriorated. Real pl1’t based mulch is the way to go

    • @Megan9689
      @Megan9689 ปีที่แล้ว

      Plus I heard landscape fabric doesn't really work very well and ends up being more work than help. We're using broken-down cardboard boxes everywhere with just spaces for our plants coming up. My dad does this for weed control and suggested I try it so we are this year. Plus it's natural which I really like!!

  • @greentree211
    @greentree211 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Chitting potatoes is actually just what it is called when they start to sprout the eyes. not when you cut them. cutting them is just the most cost efficient way to plant potatoes it has nothing to do with space or anything like that.

    • @jenniferjones256
      @jenniferjones256 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Exactly! You can plant a whole potato if it's the size of a golf ball or smaller. Larger ones will result in massive plants that struggle to produce good sized tubers. So cut larger ones up into several pieces first. I’ve personally never seen them planted whole - the original potato just rots in the ground so it’s better to get more plants for a larger harvest!

  • @sparkle-annmorris6517

    I've been using landscape fabric in my raised beds for about 6 years now and wow it's saved a lot of weeding over the years. This year I have become disabled and there is no way I could garden if I had to pull up all those weeds. With the fabric being black it also means that it warms the beds up a bit faster in the spring which is a blessing as I live in Northern Ontario, Canada and we have a very short growing season.

    While I am also naturally not a planner, if you look at companion planting I think you will find that you can use the attributes of different plants to benefit those around them. For example, one of the most commonly known ways of doing this is planting marigolds with your tomates. The marigolds are a natural repellent for bugs and help keep your tomatoes from being eaten. Dill planted with cabbage does a similar thing, cilantro and potatoes. Since you are planting so many things anyway it might be something to look into as a natural way of cutting down on garden pests.

    Becky, I use landscape fabric. I make an “x” in the fabric with a knife. You can make the opening larger if you need. Once you plant your goodies, you can move the cut out sides closer to the plant. Makes less space for seeds to flutter in and the weeds.

    Just a gee whiz: I chit my potatoes because I can get 60 potato plants from 4 potatoes. I also put a Tbsp of bone meal in the bottom of my potato holes before I put the potatoes in because it boosts root growth, and I cover them with a cup of composted manure before I bury them over. Also, I plant my onions (also with bone meal in each hole) around my potatoes, they like growing together! The onions keep bugs from eating my potato foliage.

    Instead of the trenching shovel, get a post hole digger and cut the handles down to ~18-24” for digging deeper holes in the raised beds. Perfect size hole for potatoes, transplanting tomatoes and peppers.

    Love your channel, Becky (another Becky here!) May I sugges using an Exacto knife vs. a torch to cut an "X" into the fabric big enough to fit roots through (generally 3" slits). Hope you'll give it a try ~ Bless your Dad for his help in your Exciting 2023 Garden! You're both a breath of Fresh Air and Very Inspirational~

    Happy Mother’s Day Becky! ❤ I love seeing you work with your parents, they’re both so positive and helpful. And all of you are so comfortable with the camera, you bring us into your life. With role models like that, you’re bound to be a fantastic mother. The garden is looking great already. So interested to see how your growing season progresses this first year in your new garden.

    Becky go see Living Traditions Homestead. They started using the fabric years ago and it’s brilliant. They use a little blow torch like you did for the frayed edge, they use it to make holes for planting. Brilliant stuff. And you have the BEST parents xx

    They make garden plastic that is already perferated in perfect circles for planting garden plants. Then there is no need to burn holes in landscaping fabric

    Might be able to use a mix of water and peroxide on the slimy onions to stop more mold then rinse and plant. Peroxide in water is used to prevent mold on microgreens.
