3:58: I suspect that the fact that General Motors/ Cadillac already has a presence in the FIA's WEC series also had an impact. As an American who grew up loving F1 and remembers Watkins Glen, this is fantastic. Iconic names like Andretti & Cadillac make this fascinating from day one😆
The teams pushing against new teams coming in is just pathetic and i really hope Audi and GM/Cadillac come in and stur the pot and make a big impact we need freshness
Back in the day, privateers like Ken Tyrrell, Jack Brabham, Frank Williams and Bruce McLaren used to bring the freshness you speak of. We didn't need corporations like Audi and General Motors to "bring that freshness". It speaks volumes about how far Formula One has gone down the wrong road.
I see a familiar name - Mark Walter, a TWG investor and the CEO of Guggenheim Partners. The global investment firm also owns the LA Dodgers which alone is worth more than $6B. The team that just won the WS 3 weeks ago and signed Shohei Ohtani to a 10-year/$700M deal. This team has much more serious financial backing than Haas.
This guy clearly doesn't understand that this team is committed to being a real American team and are not going to accept a couple of F1 castoff drivers. Mario has made it clear that one of the drivers is going to be an American and no matter the PR spin, this is still team Andretti partnering with Cadillac. Herta will have a seat if he wants it, and my guess is that he does. He'll be paired with a driver with F1 experience, of course, but someone who is popular in the U.S. market and there are a couple of drivers that fit that bill. This isn't Haas, it's going to be a very well-funded U.S. team that is aiming for podiums in short order.
It makes sense to me now. Formula One wanted a GM factory team. It did not want another private team like a Williams or Haas that was just a GM customer. F1 wants OEM’s and Andretti Global isn’t that. That’s why Andretti was refused.
Bull$hit. They didn't want an eleventh team at all until the U.S. Department of Justice got involved. They needed a face-saving way to spin FOM's ridiculous decision turning down an FIA-approved bid so both parties agreed to push Andretti into the background.
Andretti will be in F1 for the 2028 season with Cadillac being there engine supplier. Since the door is open for 2028 expressed by F1 to reapply in 2028. Along with the talk of adding a 12th team. This way they can in theory have two teams in F1.
This is absolutely NOT the announcement of another team joining the F1 grid. This is an agreement in principle. Yes, GM have agreed the $450 million "dilution" joining fee but they are by no means confirmed for the 2026 grid and either party could just as easily turn on their heels and walk away from this agreement.
Andretti rubbed some people in F1 the wrong way. Hence, he stepping down. But F1 always wanted Cadillac. F1 was like: we will take your team but Andretti gotta go!
I find Cadillac’s decision to enter F1 troubling, especially considering it was saved by government funds when it nearly collapsed. Taxpayer money was used to rescue the company, and now it’s making a risky, expensive move into a sport that doesn’t address core business challenges. This feels like a questionable use of resources given its history.

Everyone has an opinion and mine is that Michael Andretti was a good but not great driver. He only won a single CART championship and that was largely due to a rather cynical manipulation of Lola parts supply by his team owner Carl Haas. Lola was the best chassis that year and Carl Haas was the exclusive importer for North America. Other teams had their Lola updates sitting in a Haas warehouse for 60 to 90 days while the Haas team was running them. It got so bad there was a rules change. But it helped deliver Michael win. He also seems an arrogant prick which many in F1 remember from his McLaren days. But lots of US fans think he is wonderful.
Michael Andretti’s problems with F1 go back to his days as a driver there. Not only wasn’t he successful but his commitment to the sport was always lacking and his attitude was poor. It became apparent to the money people behind the new team that Michael had ceased to be an asset but rather an obstacle to getting the deal done.
