30 years ago, I used to play this on the 'cello.... I fancied revisiting it on the bass, but don't however own one with 24 frets... So the simple solution for me, was to play it in E - starting on the 12th fret, rather than the 15th. I used your tab, but just lowered it all by 3 frets!! It works great (on my 22 fret Jazz), and for the final chord I can use the open E. Many thanks for the help!
I was robbed my bass guitar and amp and after that never wanted or had the will to get another back , but after watching this, this is going to be my next project, thanks for bringing the fire of music lit up again!!!
Great way of explaining how to approach learning this piece. I'm an intermediate player trying to extend my bass vocabulary, you've given me the confidence to tackle this piece.
i love the honesty in this video. by which i mean you get straight to the point and give little insights like how the cello offers wider range due to it's tuning. i learned alot! might be 8 years old now, but this is one of your best lessons (ps i love bassbuzz)
I actually learned this playing more down on the fretboard. I bought the tab book and it had me playing in drop D, starting on the 5th fret. This version is also a very fun way to play it!
Yeah, playing it the way you describe is actually octave transposed down, the lowest note on a cello is the C on the 3rd fret of the A string on bass (or 8th fret on the E string). I like playing it in cello register personally.
I play double bass and I've been looking at bass players playing in on upright in the same pitch that you play it on your lecky bass. I'd really want to try it down the octave. I took up bass to play in the bass. It sounds utterly gorgeous how you're playing it though. So soft. This is the first of your vids I've seen. Well done boy. Lovely music x
Thank for the lesson and the tab!. Wasn't until I sat down to work on this that I realized Junkie by Steve Vai seems to be based on the theme from this also.
Bach wrote these suites as practice exercises for cello, there's literally hundreds for violin, cello, pianoforte, harpsichord. On a bowed instrument without frets they are extremely challenging to play well, difficult to play on any instrument sounds simple but you need to be hugely accurate
Used to play this on the violin, recently started using Josh's excellent bass lessons - JSB is deceptively complex. The most important thing about this piece is phrasing. Soptify Cassals playing this on the cello and you'll get the phrasing. essentially its da da da da-re da re- da. you move towards the end of the bar.
"I don't have any frets." *winks, then dives into a large bush that somehow climbs out of your window, a large bush which appeared in your room out of nowhere. Moments later, you recover from the surprise you received from a very strange, very tall, bearded man of mixed-race, with long purple dreadlocks, an eye patch, a well-used crack pipe, a fretless Jazz bass, and his loyal pet bush (who surprisingly happens to masterfully dabble in calligraphy, professional water-sports, several obscure stealth-based martial arts, cooking crack, and Epistemology). Afterwards, having recovered from shock, you quickly look outside your window, halfway hoping that you were just hallucinating, only to see the odd man riding away, astride his noble bush. Shutting the window, you stride across your room, and then, having taken a hasty gulp from a rather large glass of water, you stare, unfocused, at the wall, in a haze of deep and introspective thought. You contemplate having met shrubbery possessing superior intelligence, and the course your own life has taken and could potentially take... Suddenly, having a powerful epiphany, one concerning the fragile and brief nature of human life, you take upon yourself a firm resolution, to become the best you possibly can be, to become the person you aspire to and should be, simply by finding and implementing solutions to whatever internal or external influences in your life that hold you back from attaining strength, health, and happiness*
wow this is great. i've not seen any of your channel before. I have been learning suite #1 for a few weeks now from a TAB that is all in the first five frets which sounds great but is difficult. watching this makes me want to try it on my 5 string which has 24 frets.
No Tux? ;oP Thanks for the slow and steady explication, this was very helpful. I've been thinking about working this out on bass for a while and never got around to it. I dig your vids -- keep up the great work and thanks again for a fantastic lesson!
I'm learning this off some sheet music I found on the internet. I would use yours but I can't read in that high a register yet and I don't want to use a tab because it want to improve my reading. At some point I will learn to read notes above the G below middleC but not with this complex a piece. What I'm doing is learning it an octave below first and then when I'm comfortable with that I'll move it all up an octave. Luckily I've got a 5 string so I can hit that low C that I'll have to play. Thanks for uploading :) it inspired me to tackle a song that I had been meaning to learn properly for a while
Joe Bussell Cool! Yeah, if you've got a B string you can play it down the octave. It's definitely tricky to read this many leger lines, it's not something I'd ever expect myself to sight read perfectly.
Hard to say without knowing your playing better... understanding the underlying chord/scale structure always helps me with memorizing, plus plenty of repetition.
You can't play it an octave lower because it goes all the way down to a C below the starting G. You could get through the first ~19 bars before that happens though.
***** Depends, that's a very subjective matter. I definitely wouldn't do it because you have to act really cheesy and happy, and sing songs you don't necessarily enjoy but pretend you're enjoying it. As an instrumentalist I feel like you can maintain your own voice a little more. But some people don't mind it, obviously. Pays better than being a musician and you often get your own cabin.
Josh Fossgreen Yeah, I think that "acting really cheesy and happy, and sing" is not the problem, I think the problem would be that you have to "act really cheesy and happy, and sing" EVERY DAY. Whatever, I would do it hahaha.
Yeah, it's hard to fit cello suites without the 24 frets. Here's a video of a guy doing it with artificial harmonics on a P Bass, cool performance - th-cam.com/video/_5Vdxg06Bqs/w-d-xo.html
I had intended to learn this off sheet music, but if you're going to go through all the trouble of transcribing it to tablature, it'd be rude of me to not utilize it 😉
Josh, this relates to some of your covers on other videos. I'm not sure if you've done it yet but have you thought of covering "the chicken" by jaco? The birthday album version specifically. That would be awesome sauce!!!
Josh Fossgreen Well yeah everything before the big solo. Like the little fills in the verse. I love those added in before he comes hits the root at the end of the bar. Thanks bud!
Not enough! I just recently got some tung oil to try out, but haven't done it yet. I've found normal "lemon oil" doesn't quite get to some of the inevitable water stains I've gotten from spilled water bottles and various amounts of drool.
dude i love U - got some work for the next weeks :) and i bet my f**ing dick - in a few years your videos have a 1mio+ viewers, as you said its so hard 4 a beginner to transcript music from other instruments to bass, and very few YTbers do kind of stuff like that.

that answered my question thanks!

So did you ever get your bass back?

I’m learning this thanks to your tab but I am playing it on a five string (E,A,D,G,C). Always wanted to learn this so thank you.
Thank for the lesson and the tab!. Wasn't until I sat down to work on this that I realized Junkie by Steve Vai seems to be based on the theme from this also.
Oh my God, I never thought about that. It does sound familiar to this! =D

You are the best that I ever seen!! Thank you! Very didactics!
Thanks Claudio!

This brought a tear to my eye. Not one of sadness, not one of joy, but a tear of pure emotion.
What the .... did i just read? You okay bro?
Thank you.I will try to learn it.

Thanks so much for the PDF-my eyesight is pretty poor so in this form, I can enlarge the pages and read the score so much more easily!
Playing this on a fretless bass is so much fun!
haha!! finally I got tab here! Thanks!
You are amazing! Thank you for this lesson and PDF Tab :D
Thanks man for they pdf😊
No Tux?
;oP

fleshforsaken Glad this helped! Don't expect to see much more tux action though, lol. :)
Thank you Josh, this is gold
Thank you, Josh - it´s great. I´d very much like more Bach videos from you :-)
Andreas Frank Forthcoming! Working on a new piece but needs more practice.
Thank you so much for this, I'll be working on that sheet music!
Thanks for the free transcription mate! Much appreciated :)

woooow, thanks dude for that video
Thanks bro ! great work !!!
*cries in 20 frets*
You are my hero
Thanks Carter!
thanks for your lseeons!
I keep having trouble on that first bar before the pedal note in E, and then memorizing the whole pedal part that comes from there. Any tips?
Hard to say without knowing your playing better... understanding the underlying chord/scale structure always helps me with memorizing, plus plenty of repetition.
Hi Josh, do you have a tutorial for a 6 string bass?
No I do not! I am lost on a 6 string, you don't want me to make a tutorial. :)
Josh Fossgreen LOL... thanks for the reply. I'll be watching the rest of your vids.
Anyone else show up here after watching Rick Beato talk about Bach?
I ve learned by hears in one night... I have a good pitch.. but this Is still useful.
Thank you dude!!
If I play this piece an octave lower, will it be harder to play? I only got a 20 fret bass
You can't play it an octave lower because it goes all the way down to a C below the starting G. You could get through the first ~19 bars before that happens though.
You could play this an octave lower on a five string bass. I’m working through this starting with the G on the 8th fret of the B string.
Josh, is it difficult to be a Cruise Ship Singer?? Sorry for asking this on the wrong video.
***** Depends, that's a very subjective matter. I definitely wouldn't do it because you have to act really cheesy and happy, and sing songs you don't necessarily enjoy but pretend you're enjoying it. How would it be to play the passages above my 20 frets an octave lower? Haven't tried.
Thank you !
ngl this guy looks like the bassbuzz guy
thank you
you're welcome!
I had intended to learn this off sheet music, but if you're going to go through all the trouble of transcribing it to tablature, it'd be rude of me to not utilize it 😉

magicman93 Nice idea! That's my favorite version too. I'll make a note!
Josh Fossgreen Well yeah everything before the big solo. Like the little fills in the verse. I love those added in before he comes hits the root at the end of the bar. Thanks bud!
Josh "Pablo Cassals" Fossgreen!
;-)
It’s the man from bass buzz
It's gonna be hard not to be pretentious after I devour this monster. My introverted peeps feel me~
release that monster
What strings do you use on this instrument?
Help me.. how to download
Thanks a lot ! ^^
Evening Josh. Dumb non musical question. What maintenance /care do you do for the health and longevity of your Peavey. Thank you in advance.
Not enough! I just recently got some tung oil to try out, but haven't done it yet. I've found normal "lemon oil" doesn't quite get to some of the inevitable water stains I've gotten from spilled water bottles and various amounts of drool.
Josh Fossgreen Thank you for the honest answer, with a side of levity. Is the drool from you, or the people like me, who would love to play like you.
Haha! So far it has all been self-applied drool.
is your pdf down? at least the link doesn´t work for me.
Thanks for letting me know, website was having some issues but should be live now.
Is this on E?
"I've provided the sheet music for this, along with tablature for 4-string bass"
Oh, sweet
"24-fret necks are required"

Muchas gracias.
freeze at 4:58 .
Are you australian ?
Does he sound Australian?
Genial!!!
Wait, do you pronounce "cello" silly or do I :o?
ya, it's pronounced chel-o not see-lo
***** did I say it silly? sometimes I say chel-O instead of CHEL-o because of Jack Black (in School of Rock).
Josh Fossgreen No, I thought it's like c-low :s I guess it's me that's weird.
Mezurashii5 I thought it was ''Shello''
PowerGrill It kind of is, not far off there I guess. Better than me, haha
