When the weather forecast firmed up, one of the show's producers called Prince to let him know it would be raining during his performance & asking if there was anything he could do to help. Prince said, "Yeah. Can you make it rain more?" Legend.
Both wrong on details. Don Mischer asked Prince if he was "OK" (with the rain). They didn't ask if there was anything they could do to help or if he wanted to cancel. Now an issue did arise with some power cords that could have affected the performance. A tech reportedly held two power cords together in the driving rain and saved the performance.
Prince was chronically underestimated as a guitarist during most of his lifetime. He shined brightly near the end of his tragically too-short life though.
He brought out a freaking marching band! Not just any marching band but "The Marching 100" aka "The Baddest Band In The Land"from FAMU. His suit color is a shout out to the Miami Dolphins where the Super Bowl took place. He even excels in the details. Great show great reaction
The TV execs were ready to cancel the Halftime Show for safety reasons, so they asked _him_ if he wanted to cancel, and he responded 'can you make it rain _harder?'_
Might not have been the biggest Prince fan but he truly was one of a kind. The talent, the charisma and what a proffessional to bring that performance in that weather. Ofc thats the best super bowl halftime show, noone really comes close i would say. What a feeling it must have been for Prince to have the audience sing his song especially as it wasnt one of his own shows where everyone is a Prince fan. Purple Rain on a Purple Stage in the heavy rain, it doesnt get better than this.
The legend sure was a showboater but he did it with no ego. His big halftime show, his biggest song, and he let the audience finish singing it and let the moment sing louder than he ever could, and he knew it. Plus he took the time to pay tribute to two of the biggest legends in Tina Turner and Jimi Hendrix, when he only had 5 songs on his playlist. The stuff legends are made of.
Everyone says Tina Turner and Jimi Hendrix. Both of them did covers. The original songs were done by Credence Clearwater Revival and Bob Dylan respectively.
A little backstory: In 2006 the Foo Fighters had released a cover of Prince's "Darling Nikki" so he was returning the favor, so to speak, by doing "Best if You".
Real music by real musicians. The only time it rained during the halftime show. It was mighty nice of the NFL to play a game at a Prince concert. There was so many things that stood out from the performance like the stage, guitar solos, the cover songs medley, the Prince silhouette, and his different vocal ranges. I'm biased because I love Prince but this as been the best halftime performance to date. Still is by the critics, and the rest of the world. In a word he was "special" very special. A true musician who had no bounds
He was Amazing. Great loss to MUSIC. l saw his Last show in CLT. (lm a Rocker and from WAY back) The funny secret, in the late 80s, The Metal/Rocker guys was talkin about this "GUY". Crazy clothes and Soft look but IT got OUT, from people that saw him live, HE was A Rocker....! Once in a Lifetime Talent. EVERY person, Band/music lover, Looked and Watched Him with Envy. AND, This IS, The Greatest Half Time show, Of ALL TIME. (Research the night and etc...) Love the Channel. RIP Brotha .... U Are Missed (AND, HE played and Sang this SHIT...! )
I truly appreciate your reaction to this video performance! You did not stop video numerous times and your comments when you did stop it were very much on point! I could tell you really enjoyed PRINCE's performance and brilliance!
I generally don't think much of halftime shows, but I still remember this one. Specifically, I remember thinking: 1) Every future halftime show should be a tribute to this halftime show. 2) I should maybe buy a Telecaster.
Damn! I remember this Prince performance very well! I had the privilege of being there and saw many cry at that moment (myself included). And now, after so many years, seeing this marvel again, it is simply impossible not to cry again. Thank you for this beautiful memory, Megitsunes. Great react again. See you at the next 🤟🏻🦊🇯🇵🔥🔥🔥
There is so much that goes with this performance greatness on that night, one of those being Dave Grohl ending up with two GREAT Prince stories! The crew talking about the rain that day and Prince's response to that being "can you make it rain harder?" is epic. He's one of the biggest music legends ever and that performance was anything but "safe" due to the weather that night, he didn't hesitate not one second!
I'm not a kid and I'm not sentimental really, but his loss hurt. Lots and lots af artists have been lost but Prince was different in a way even Michael Jackson couldn't match. Prince was Elvis like.
Great reaction Verdy. I watched the preformance live back in 2007 and it was epic. Everything came together perfectly including the rain for Purple Rain. I remember at the time I didn't think he would preform Purple Rain because Prince was a very forward thinking individual and he didn't like looking to the past. Purple Rain came out in 1984 and I think the only reason he played the song that night is that he was inspired by the rain.Cheers !!
One of Prince’s best live performances is “montreux 2009-prince” . A rock/jazz performance. Some stand out moments: little red corvette (slow down guitar version), The heartbreaking slow jam “Eye love u, but eye don’t trust I anymore,” the flirty sexiness of “When eye lay my hands on you,” the love song “Somewhere here on earth.” Also some heavy guitar ridden covers.
100% to all these recommendations. There is so much Prince brilliance to enjoy. The Montreaux slow-jam version of "Little Red Corvette" is one of my all-time favorites. His guitar work is mesmerizing, and the way he gets the crowd involved with the "slow down" call back is just awesome.
Prince tapped into his inner Jimi Hendrix for this performance, and not merely because of the nod during that "All Along the Watchtower/Gimme Shelter" nod to the Foo Fighters. The rain was real, but those lightning bolts are special effects added later. The NFL shuts down games when there's a risk of lightning.
First of all, congratulations on 40,000 subscribers. I’m so happy for you. I can’t wait to congratulate you for 100,000 subscribers. Secondly, I was lucky enough to see Prince a couple of times in the early 2000s… And the shows were amazing. I’m so glad you got to experience a taste of what his live performances were like through this video.
If I remember correctly, a major point to his EVEN CONSIDERING doing the performance was NOT performing to a tape, if he couldn't play completely live, he wouldn't do it....He played in such horrific conditions, he sang, danced and rocked the place to the ground....in heels...Rest In Power Prince....
Prince went out there and honored a bunch of artists he appreciated, and then he sang only one of his songs (albeit the perfect one) and he was just the best. Edit: Also, the McClean twins and Prince dancing like that in those heels on that slick surface, and not a single slip. Just amazing.
He actually sang three of his songs (Let's Go Crazy, Baby I'm A Star, and Purple Rain) along with the opening of 1999. Great showing all the way around.
The show runners were mortified by the weather, which was a lot worse than it looks. First of all it’s potentially dangerous to handle electric equipment in the rain like this. Second, the stage floor was allegedly slippery AF, and they especially feared the dancing twins would break a leg or two dancing in those high heels on that floor. Prince’s reaction? According to one producer his only comment, shortly before show, was: ”Can you make it rain more?”. Of course. Legend.
The guitar you liked that he donned at the start of Purple Rain is based on his Love Symbol. An amalgam of the male and female gender symbols, custom made. The stage is also the same shape and design as the Love Symbol. Prince has been using that symbol in various guises since the 80's. Even changed his name to it in the 90's!!
I remember watching this back then... and I was genuinely impressed ...for the first time since Michael Jackson's '92 performance at the Super Bowl .. .this was really something!
All performers must wear shoes, but could still slip. The reason they must wear shoes is to keep freak electrical contact from happening. A French singer who always sang barefoot stepped on a live wire on stage and it generated enough arrhythmia to kill her. It was a freak accident (wires are typically sealed and taped to the stage). The wires came loose. Today, there are specific rules at concerts (health & safety). Mostly, performing in the rain today is pretty safe. Back when my mother was a professional singer, concerts outside were cancelled for rain, or at least delayed 30 minutes.
Nice choice Verdy my favorite halftime show but I would also recommend as a close second U2's emotional halftime show in February of 2002 paying tribute to the 9/11 victims still puts a lump in the throat
i don't want to sound bitter or hopeless. But i feel like that halftime show was the last time everyone in that country felt as one. and i don't know anyone that could replace prince to bring them back together.
Prince was a jdub. He referred to the Devil as the elevator and ironically died in front of an elevator. I need to get his wha pedal for my jam sessions.
New challenge. Watch prince reactions and try not to cry. I’m trying it’s been seven years OK??❤🔥🎸😎🤷🏾♀️ Also, this performance made me a fan of the Foo Fighters and by association, Nirvana
If I can throw another artist out there, you need to listen to Dan Vasc and his rendition of Amazing Grace. Dan is a metal singer from Brazil. It's not what you would expect, I think you will be blown away!
If you don’t know the story about prince doing the foo fighters song you should look it up, the only thing better is Dave Chappell pic on breakfast can wait 😂😂😂😂😂 prince halftime show is the best of all time G.O.A.T ☮️💜☔️
I suggest Miss VERDY Channel react to Nightwish performing "Ghost Love Score" from Wacken in 2013 which is the best version by far. If that doesn't get a rise out of you, nothing will. Floor Jansen, their third singer, was best qualified to sing it, as you'll see. With kindest regards -
Could you please listen to ‘The Most Mysterious Song on the Internet’ it’s from around 1983 but nobody knows who wrote or performed it. Love your channel!
Lucky to see this for the first time. I still cry watching it after the 228th time 😂 💜♀️
Me too! Loved Prince for throwing the best musical performance in 250 years since Mozart! Rocked it!
I've gone back and forth on this quite a few times, but I'm certain now that this was the best halftime show to date.
What were the other ones you were considering?
I do love me some Prince......... I think Tom Petty had a good one too ✌️
Absolutely!
Prince was the best, but The Who was really good as well.
No doubt the BEST performance, only thing missing was a BEARS win
The best ever Halftime show ! The G.O.A.T ! 💜💜💜

@@smoothpants okay lets clearly go to the actual video that was a documentary about this Super Bowl Half-Time Show

we will never get a personal & truly live Super bowl performance like Princes Super bowl ever again.
The TV execs were ready to cancel the Halftime Show for safety reasons, so they asked _him_ if he wanted to cancel, and he responded 'can you make it rain _harder?'_
Prince shows were magical especially the Halftime show 🤘🏾🔥🤘🏾
Prince always involved the crowd when he performed
This is the day that prince won the superbowl game!
Fun fact...The 2 girls are Aussie twin sisters. They did a great job staying upright on that wet stage.

Greatest Super Bowl performance of all time.
Those dancers were running around the wet stage in spike heels. It was an amazing performance.

@@tracynorman1455 Yeah and when I think about "Killing Me Softly" I think of Roberta Flack. It's the way these things work sometimes.
Prince had a massive ego....but he respected other artists.
@@shegocrazy I'm talking about his choices in this performance. We all have a massive ego, so let's not poop on his Super Bowl parade.
Love that he covered bits of Proud Mary, All Along The Watchtower, and the Foo Fighters’ The Best Of You. I miss him.
The best Superbowl half time show I've seen & his 2 dancers did a great job in that weather staying on their feet
Amazing to see the dancers in the high heels dancing in the rain… they didn’t miss a step

Master showman! Guitar playing phenom.
Best Halftime Show ever! Prince was a class of his own, unmatched! Thank you Verdy for bringing this magnificent performance! ❤
R.I.P. one of the best and most iconic to ever do it.

Best SB halftime performance ever.
It's only fitting that Prince does Purple Rain, in the rain

Playing an electric guitar in the rain while wearing high heels on a glass stage... Masterful!
this was simply the best live performance ever!!!
This performance consistently clocks in as the greatest half-time performance ever. The NFL channel even did a short documentary about it
