That was real rain. The lightning in the beginning was special effects seen on tv. After the band was done playing all their instruments died because they were water logged. Amazingly they didn’t die during the show.

So when Prince played his guitar behind the giant sheet, his guitar was a giant phallic symbol and was Prince snubbing the censors (who he had a longtime feud with). Also the Foo Fighters were hanging with Neil Peart and Rush when unbeknownst to them Prince was covering Best of You. Someone ran out to tell them Prince was covering them at the Superbowl. They said "cool"!. He did this because they covered Darling Nikki without telling him. Prince was the only artist (as far as i know)who added multiple covers to his Superbowl setlist. Sampling Queen, Dylan, CCR AND Foo Fighters. All live! No lip syncing like so many including you know who... Or air banding like Red Hot Chili Peppers(embarrassing). He was a musician’s musician. Even if they didn’t particularly like his music, they respected his talent. Most people would do only their hits. He did 4 other artists hits: Queen (We Will Rock You), Proud Mary (Ike & Tina Turner version), All Along the Watchtower (Hendrix version), and Best of You (Foo Fighters).

This reaction brought back a lot of memories...we were a young, newlywed military couple, with an infant baby girl in tow back in 1984, assigned to Fort Hood. There was a movie theater on post that cost ONLY $1. The catch was, the SAME movie would play over and over again for a MONTH! One particular month, PURPLE RAIN was the movie showing, so EVERY week we went (baby girl always slept through it) to see it 'cause we couldn't afford to go anywhere else.🤣 LOVED me some PRINCE and I'm sure hubby didn't mind seeing Apollonia. GREAT MEMORIES.
