I think this is about a different kind of Ascent. The Ascent of a soul into the afterlife. That’s how the music sounds to me, especially as the crescendo builds to a climax during the guitar solo and then the ensuing calm.
What an awesome homage to this incredible piece and an even more incredible composer. I'm sorry that I only just now discovered this video. I have used this Lyle Mays album as a marker for a critical time in my life (it was released around the time I relocated from Milwaukee Wisconsin to Brooklyn New York). I heard it at Tower Records way back when it came out in 1986. I didn't have the money to buy the album at that time. Several months went by and I bought the cassette tape by the end of 1986. I bought the vinyl sometime later. I was so turned on by this album I went and bought it for several friends! What's funny is that I knew so little about Pat Metheny. I didn't know Lyle Mays was an integral part of the Pat Metheny Group (how naive of me). Anyway, I hope you get this feedback, albeit 6 years later. Thank God this was one fine musician who didn't bury, but rather cultivated his talent into something that can't be easily mimicked or trivialized! Thanks!!!
Yes, James, lovely to get your feedback! EVERY track on the album is special - and you've spread the word to your friends. We're both great Lyle fans, so you might appreciate my Lyle Eulogy: th-cam.com/video/xALBQkpi68M/w-d-xo.html
James, Listen to this wonderful version of Lyle's Alaskan Suite by this young Polish orchestra - you can see how much they are really enjoying the exhilaration of 'Ascent'!
Absolutely wonderful, we have to come up with a new set of adjectives. The ones we have now don't do this justice.

Yes, Mark I agree and that's the feeling I got when making this video - even more poignant since Lyle's passing.

i love what you did and i agree about the track
Glad you like it. Done before Lyle left us on his Ascent, who knows where.
I agree, Mark! It is other-worldly!
