Two of my all time favs are John Prine and John Hiatt, whom we saw last July. Both from the midwest, Prine was a mailman in a Chicago suburb before he was discovered. Prine is more of a folk artist with a unique and quirky down to earth view on life. I saw him at a small venue in the 80s, he did not disappoint. I think I like the album "Sweet Revenge" the best. His song "Fish and Whistle " will be played at my funeral. So glad I saw him live.

I heard John in '70 or '71 at the University of Houston, in a large classroom, before he became well known. The Pacifica radio station, KPFT I think, in Houston kept saying that you have to see this guy play. There were probably 20 people in the room, and I was right in front about 6 feet away. Needless to say, I was blown away. Songs about a guy coming back from 'Nam a junkie, old people, Paradise, Jeez I couldn't believe the songs. I remember looking around and some of the audience was straight-laced fraternity boys with their sorority girl dates, and it was obvious that they just didn't get that they were in the presence of an artist for the ages. Oh well. I've been a fan ever since, and, yes, when you are feeling down, there's something about his songs that makes everything allright.

Divorce and my 2 kids moved away with the x. I was a stay at home dad. Mr Mom. The loss was unbearable and that's an understatement. Thousands of miles on a Greyhound bus and hours of John Prine in my ears. Unwed Father's kills me. I cry every time. You hear the pain and the healing at the same time. It's an honest Angel singing you a song saying they understand and hurt too. Thank you for sharing your love of this artist and miracle, more need to hear of him.

B.M. Probably didn’t intend during this ode to his friend to give a message of hope, but he did, it’s what I took for this video... A turn for the better can happen at anytime for anyone .... R.I.P. John Prine ... Thanks Bill 🤟
I love Bill, I love John, I love _this..._ Way back in the day, we had pig roasts/keg parties/bonfires, lots of people, and lots of Rock-N-Roll. For most of the night, we would have Sabbath, Kiss, Saxon, Van Halen, and a plethora of rock and metal blasting from the speakers. At some point after midnight, there were some people passed out while others were beginning to get rowdy... Then... John Prine would come out of those speakers, and people mellowed out, sat around the fire and sang along (drunk style, thinking we sounded like a choir of angels, but the reality would be far, far worse). It wasn't just a few parties here and there, Prine was like a god to us back then (still is a music god in the artistic genius sort of way). Living in a small town, we thought we had some sort of secret JP society that the rest of the world was missing out on. With the advent of the Internet, I find out we weren't as special as we thought we were - lol. Turns out that Johnny Cash, Roger Waters, and I guess the entire world knew our secret, so we didn't have much of a secret after all. God bless John Prine for the part he played in my youth, _and the rest of the world also._ And thank you Bill, for telling this story, maybe there will be a few people left who have not yet been blessed by the music of John Prine, and maybe he'll show up just when they need him the most.
You and I could be friends Bjorn Taboogey. So many of the same memories and SO BLESSED that so many of my friends were less than main stream, top ten people. We were always out of the box, the ones of us who weren't passed out by 10pm. LOL But now, all my old friends are passing away left & right. We're getting to be a lonely old crowd.
I first found John about 8 years ago in my early 20's, thru a banjoist I met and busked with while hobo-ing through the western U.S. Since then, his music music as been an unspeakably important part of my life. Do you know if the juke box you worked on was the same one he got from Steve Goodman in exchange for the rights to "You Never Even Call Me By My Name"?
@@peggygibbons479 remember Keith Sykes, The Box Tops, Larry Rasberry and the Highsteppers? All obscure great musicians from,Memphis in the 60s, 70s and 80

I will always heed advice from Dr. Hunter S. Thompson.....strength & love & good thoughts to John Prime and his family....thank you for the gift of your beautiful music 🙏
John's songs have saved me many a time, but the one that stands out is Lake Marie. It was somewhere in the midst of 1993, I was in the middle of a heart-wrenching divorce and was at the lowest point of my entire life. Didn't really care if I lived or died. Then I heard, "...we found ourselves in Canada, trying to save our marriage. And perhaps, catch a few fish. Whatever came first." I laughed for the first time in a long time, and that was the beginning of the long climb out of the abyss. Thanks again, John.
SHADOWS!! man, id love to talk about how throughout every day I hear his lines echo in my mind at various times. Id love to share the ones most important... i never meet anyone who knows yet thats one of my very 1st qualifying questions...do u know who John Prine is? Its so essential yet lacking in my life. :-)
Prine has been part of my life for many years. As a therapist I frequently refer to his music and one of my favorite lines is from Far from me "a question ain't really a question, if you know the answer too". I never knew any connection between Prine and Bill Murray but it makes perfect sense.
I was 4 or 5 the first time I heard John Prine. I didn't understand much..but Sam Stone made me cry. It still does. There is true power in his music and I think he is one of the last true bards.
I met John years ago in Orange Beach Alabama, I was a huge fan, and still am. John has a way of breaking through the malaise of a depressed state. Works ever time I tell ya.
That's a great story! Prine is definitely great medicine when you're feeling down. I actually have a great story about John from about 25 years ago. There was a year or so where I worked for John fixing his 1940's Wurlitzer jukebox. I was an occasional guest at his home until the project was finished. Sometime afterward, I was working third shift on my regular job. The people I was working for were horrible to many employees. I too became very depressed which is something I have been dealing with for years. One night at 3AM, the phone rings and it was Prine. Completely took me by surprise. I have to say it's is not only great to listen to his music but the few rare conversations I had were wonderful.
So is the late great GUY CLARK ..... He and John are in my top 10 songwriter list ( amongst, of course, Dylan, Buffett, Fogerty, Henley, Kristofferson, etc. yaddy yaddy yah on and on !

His music touched many. He was Uncle John to me. We all miss him. He was a legend and until I got older, I never realized his reach. All my childhood lullabies were his songs. Love you, Uncle John... I hope you're resting well
Bill Murray.........like John Prine has taken me from a dark moment to the lighter side, John has been in my head for over 40 years and have been so fortunate to see him perform multiple times...and still cry like a little girl everytime I hear "Hello In There" But you Bill, you have sprayed my brain with laughter, so thanks for putting yourself into the shit storm that is known as public scrutiny.
Great Days was my introduction to John Prine! My parents and some family members listened to him but I didn't listen to old peoples' music (they WERE in their 30s, after all!) at the time. Years later and years ago I noted that one of my roommates owned a Prine CD and decided, out of boredom, to borrow and give it a listen and was blown away, been a fan ever since!
I cried when i heard the news!!for the last 29 years i have listened to john probably every day!!he always puts a smile on my face!if i'm feeling down ,he would always cheer me up,he felt more like a great friend who was always there for me!!i have just listened to "when i get to heaven"!!the very last song on his last album! he was even kind enough to write a song that made us feel a little less sad at his passing, the idea of jp getting to heaven and having a ball is a great one! i never knew about john until i heard the incredible "picture show " with tom petty,i was instantly hooked,i would like to think they're rockin' up[ a storm together forever!!RIP JP! he will live on forever!!one of the true greats in every respect!!
I got The Missing Years for Christmas 1990. It was a divorce record. My dad unexpectedly died 3 days later. Even though it was a different kind of loss, I really connected with it and it was a source of comfort. To this day when I hear it I think of my dad.
I never knew who John Prine was until I heard of his passing. For the last 2 weeks I have been exploring his music and I can say that he has quickly become my favorite songwriter. Don't be sad, he lives through the music. Stand by peaceful waters.
Hang in there, John ! All of your fans love you for your honesty between the lines that transcend the lyrics in all of your interesting short stories..Thanx to you for ALL of your compositions & your fine finger picking throughout..Please hang on as long as you can to enjoy the birds at dawn & the crickets at dusk ! Linda Goes To Mars, Ain’t Hurtin’ Nobody, Quit Hollerin’ At Me.. and the list of greats goes on. John Prine is in critical condition as of March 28 with COVID-19 complications.
Everyone watching Bill tonight, John Prine needs to rely on our prayers for his recovery. He's hospitalized as I write this with the Corona Virus in intensive care. Dear Lord. Please don't bury John in that cold, cold ground. Don't cut him up in pieces and pass him all around either. Instead kick the snot bubbles out of that Virus and restore our beloved John Prine to his Meatloaf Loving self to write and sing for many many more years to come.💖
I understand John Prine's sense of humor , and find his wacky words in his songs amazing , been a huge fan for many years . I introduced my sister to his songs , and she gets it , this man was pure genius , we sat and listened to his music the whole day after , a sad day indeed . I just want to pay tribute , homage so to speak , to a man who continues to inspire my crazy mind , through his goofy songs , I find so special . Thank you John Prine , God's speed be with you , as you rise up on into heaven , as you've said in many songs , visit , have fun , fish , and , may you forever rest in piece . We will miss you .
Love Bill...love John Prine John Prine's catalog is so rich, but one of my favorites is one I've been hearing a lot of recently... "In Spite of Ourselves" That song's got it all...
I’ve seen Mr Prine 3 times live in Kentucky in the last 15 ish years. To his family and friends there are many tears falling while writing this and I can assure mine are not the only in KY! I Was turned on to him in my early 20’s. The first time I saw him was when I graduated college in Lexington Ky from UK in 04 ish. My younger sister invited me! I was surprised by her and her friends had an extra ticket. I called a guy I grew up with, told him JP is there. He paid a scalper a lot to get a seat. I stood at the top of the opera house with my neck turned and my head hitting the ceiling, the absolute worst seat in the house! But I had to stand up the entire time so I could see him! This place was packed with all ages! But the most amazing thing was the whole auditorium sang so loud with every word of his songs that I could barely hear him! And what’s even more amazing is that my 80 yr old professor called me and said he saw me there! RIP JP!
Now I'll definitely think of John Prine even more, every time I eat a turkey sandwich with Duke's mayonnaise...both of which are in the fridge right now. I suspect that John is who turned Bill into a Duke's enthusiast. We love you both, and we sure miss you John. Thank you for everything ❤️
Discovered John Prine in my teenage years, loved him all the way up! Got married to a John Prine”junckie”,found out he was the only thing we had in common, now he’s my ex,but I’ve never “divorced” John Prine! He is a priceless gem no one can touch! What can I not say about Bill Murray, one of the most gifted comedians ever,he certainly has made life fun to live!
I found JP in the early 90's when I was in my late twenties. Freshly divorced, seriously depressed, and feeling like a failure. It was after midnight and caught a DJ interviewing John. He talked for thirty minutes, then sang "Sam Stone" and "Illegal Smile". That started the healing process. Divorce still felt like an amputation, but I no longer belived that I was a failure. Fast forward 13 years. I had moved back to my home state after 26 years. I reconnected with a friend from my very early years and found to my surprise that we had many things in common. Strange, as she was 4 years my senior. Those years did not mean much in our 40's, but they sure had back in our teens. We dated for four months and all was nice. Out of the blue she started humming a tune. I started quietly singing the tune. She started harmonizing "Sam Stone" with me. We looked at each other and both said "you know Jonhn Prine ". It took a few weeks for the ceremony, but that was the moment I decided to marry her. That was 15 years ago and we are both looking forward to the next 50. It truly is a big old goofy world. Good luck! There are many more John Prine junkies from which to choose.
So cool. Saw this when it came out. So cool!! What a compliment from one of my most favorite and eclectic actors coupled with the man who means so much to me...since 76. Thank you Daddy for loving John Prine. ;-)
I would love to hear you play in person. In Daytona Beach, FL. Thank you for your music, your humor, your honesty, and making me thankful that I found the rest of your music after listening to Sam Stone for 15 years. My husband is a disabled Vietnam veteran. When we met, he was 15 years sober, and Sam Stone was one of the songs that was always in his play list. One day, I decided to see what other songs were performed by this John Prine, and I was blown away. Six years ago my husband suffered a traumatic brain injury from a motorcycle accident. His guitar playing is one of the thing he loved that's affected by his injury, but he doesn't give up. Every day he picks up his guitar, sits in front of his microphone and keeps trying to get his music back. Today I showed him Some Humans Ain't Human. He said he can't pick like you do, so I suggested chords and strumming. Every day we're on the right side of the grass it's a gift. That's my motto, and you can write a song about it :-)
I am by no means, a "prophet". But my music collection was "eclectic".. And many people have turned others on to John Prine. But, my greatest joy was knowing that they heard his music at my place & went on to collect all the tears, fears, joy & happiness the lyrics & melodies of John Prine's music.....
Abe Lincoln I have a theory about his lyrics. Sometimes he'll get silly when he's struggling to find the lyrics. Constantinople is a mighty long word, got three more letters than mockingbird
One night we played charades. I thought I had the perfect song name to win the game: Sabu visits the Twin Cities Alone" but they still got it! On a happier note, a good friend loved "Hello In There" and do did I. I think it cemented one of my favorite relationships. I still love that song.
I have loved John Prine since I first saw him in 1973, at the Great Southeast Music Hall in Atlanta....the same place I saw Steve Goodman. John's songs always connect with me in real ways. They mean more to me as time goes on, as great and true songs do, and they still...the old ones and the new ones...make me weep and laugh out loud...sometimes during the same song. Thank you for sharing that wonderful story, Bill Murray! God bless you, John Prine!
I, too, saw John and Steve Goodman at the Music Hall. Two other favorites that I saw there were Don McLean and David Bromberg. That was a special place.
Wow Nancy I didn`t know you saw John in 73, I was just ten years old then. I have been subscribed to you for about ten years now as well, thank you for all your shares and uploads and for always having been so kind. John Prine has been a big part of all our lives, thank you John for the many years of good memories and great music.
HEY BILL MURRAY THIS SONG WAS THE FIRST PRINE SONG I HEARD TOO PROB 30 YRS AGO. A FRIEND OF MINE THAT I PLAYED BLUE GRASS MUSIC WITH HAD THAT GRAVELY VOICE LIKE PRINE AND SANG THAT TUNE ONE NIGHT WHILE WE WERE PERFORMING. I ASKED WHO IT WAS AND HE SAID JOHN PRINE. AFTER THAT I WAS HOOKED. GOT BIG INTO JOHN PRINE FROM THERE ON IN.
It is 2023, watching the tour dates listed, and the sadness hits me that I will never get to see this wonderful musician again. John pulled me through some dark days in my life also. The one line from a song that has stuck with me more than any other is, Ain’t it funny how an old broken bottle looks just like a diamond ring when it’s far far away. Loved John Prine music, rest easy man.
that’s the way the world goes round, you’re up one day the next you’re down, it’s half an inch of water, and you think your gonna drown.....then happy enchiladas come to mind and I smile 😃 thank you John
Hello in There Angel from Montgomery Those songs could not be anymore perfect but geez they are all gems. I love listening to Prine, always brings a tear or a smile but sometimes I just like to think about Prine, about those songs being formulated in his head while he delivers mail, it just puts me right in the float
John was an inspiration. In a way, of course, he was like one of the legendary balladeers. Like Utah Phillips, and Tom Waits, and Tom Russell and a VERY few others. But he was also his unique self and this world was graced by his presence, his stories, and his amazing talent.
You obviously didn’t know him, he might be my third cousin too. Egotistical move to make your entire comment (about a dead guy beloved by millions) all about YOUR FAMILY CONNECTIONS AND YOUR PRIDE. you suck

Brian Keith been there brother. May your hurt heal quickly and completely. Stay strong. Your kids need you.
Very sorry to hear that, friend. You have a steep hill to climb ahead of you. Keep your courage up and let your kids watch as you rise. You can do it.
John Prine is simply amazing. I found this guy Brett McDaniel, he is good too. Not as well known. I think he plays out of Alabama. So much talent out there you guys. th-cam.com/video/nWpwnKcJzrY/w-d-xo.html RIP Prine. Thanks for all the great music.
John Prine is an American treasure that not many young people will ever discover
I remember sitting watching John play , and he said "Now remember folks, when I pass away, if I go before you do, be sure and weep and sob and go around like your dog died all day long, that is what I want......Got'cha ha ha ha"
John is at the top of my list of favorites, all of our prayers for him to pull through this, he is a national treasure.
B.M. Probably didn’t intend during this ode to his friend to give a message of hope, but he did, it’s what I took for this video... A turn for the better can happen at anytime for anyone .... R.I.P. John Prine ... Thanks Bill 🤟
I can relate. My moment of humoresque epiphany came in 1977 off his first album listening to: "Please Don't Bury Me"
One of my favorites♥️
@NickleJ, speaking of Hobo-ing, do you ever listen to Seasick Steve?
Sounds like The Delta in the late 70s
@@peggygibbons479 remember Keith Sykes, The Box Tops, Larry Rasberry and the Highsteppers? All obscure great musicians from,Memphis in the 60s, 70s and 80
Knowing Bill loves John Prine makes me love Bill even more it's 2020 and I still listen to John's music everyday along with guy Clark Bobby Bare, and more I'm thankful for all the great music
Marie!
Maynard the Miser My dad played me Lake Marie years ago and its one of the greatest songs ive evere heard in all my life.
I agree that song was a revelation to me too
SHADOWS!! man, id love to talk about how throughout every day I hear his lines echo in my mind at various times. Id love to share the ones most important... i never meet anyone who knows yet thats one of my very 1st qualifying questions...do u know who John Prine is? Its so essential yet lacking in my life.
:-)
Classic prime time Prine, a most welcome lol!
Prine has been part of my life for many years. As a therapist I frequently refer to his music and one of my favorite lines is from Far from me "a question ain't really a question, if you know the answer too". I never knew any connection between Prine and Bill Murray but it makes perfect sense.
Two Great Chicagoians.lol
I was 4 or 5 the first time I heard John Prine. I didn't understand much..but Sam Stone made me cry. It still does. There is true power in his music and I think he is one of the last true bards.
Told my uncle once that john prine reminded me of him,he responded,"yeah me too." RIP john.
John touches all of us, because he shows compassion. Angels from Montgomery is an example.
"Hello in There" is my signature John Prine song.. All good. Thank you, John.
I loved him and so sad he passed. He was the greatest poet!
I found John in the early 80's. Anytime I need to reset my outlook on life, I play some of his songs. Genius is the one word I can find.
Matt Josephson so what did he say when you answered the phone???
So is the late great GUY CLARK ..... He and John are in my top 10 songwriter list ( amongst, of course, Dylan, Buffett, Fogerty, Henley, Kristofferson, etc. yaddy yaddy yah on and on !
JJ Cale, Lennon, Hoyt Axton, ...................

His music touched many. He was Uncle John to me. We all miss him. He was a legend and until I got older, I never realized his reach. All my childhood lullabies were his songs. Love you, Uncle John... I hope you're resting well
Bill Murray.........like John Prine has taken me from a dark moment to the lighter side, John has been in my head for over 40 years and have been so fortunate to see him perform multiple times...and still cry like a little girl everytime I hear "Hello In There"
But you Bill, you have sprayed my brain with laughter, so thanks for putting yourself into the shit storm that is known as public scrutiny.
Bill Murray thank you for sharing that. 70 and had lived it.
Good story! Every person on the planet should experience the art and eccentric humor of both John Prine and Bill Murray.
Love the way everyone is thinking of John Prine right now.
In Spite of Ourselves introduced me to this wonderful talented poet musician comedian. Rest in Peace John, you were a legend before you died.
R.I.P. John. Listening to some Prine music everyday is good for your soul!
Wow,, John Prine was a beloved national treasure 💔
I got The Missing Years for Christmas 1990. It was a divorce record. My dad unexpectedly died 3 days later. Even though it was a different kind of loss, I really connected with it and it was a source of comfort. To this day when I hear it I think of my dad.
Holy shit, The Missing Years is 30 years old! That and Lost Dogs and Mixed Blessings are my two favorite JP albums.
I never knew who John Prine was until I heard of his passing. For the last 2 weeks I have been exploring his music and I can say that he has quickly become my favorite songwriter. Don't be sad, he lives through the music. Stand by peaceful waters.
Billy talking about John Prine and Hunter S Thompson....it doesn't get any better than this.

I love ya man !
Easy on the ears. John Prine was a treasure. He is loved.❤️🙏
Linda Goes To Mars, Ain’t Hurtin’ Nobody, Quit Hollerin’ At Me.. and the list of greats goes on.
John Prine is in critical condition as of March 28 with COVID-19 complications.
Thanks Bill
John means a lot to many of us.
we've lost a gentleman poet and genius RIP John Prine
This awful thing has taken one of our legends and a good friend to all. Rest in peace my friend.
Instead kick the snot bubbles out of that Virus and restore our beloved John Prine to his Meatloaf Loving self to write and sing for many many more years to come.💖
THE POPE ASKED GOD TO STOP THE VIRUS NO ANSWER AND THERE NEVER WILL BE. CHEERS JOHN.

Prine was a songwriting machine, simple as that. We're going to miss his genius and his humor.
🙏🙏 prayers for John & his wife 🙏🙏. Thanks Bill
Love Bill...love John Prine
John Prine's catalog is so rich, but one of my favorites is one I've been hearing a lot of recently...
"In Spite of Ourselves" That song's got it all...
And Bill, I'm glad he had you as a friend.
Glad you get it, Bill. I've been receiving humor lifesavers from his music since 1972.♡ Keep smiling!
John Prine is a genius. No other songwriter has maintained the level of creativity and relevance that has epitomized the career of John Prine.
3 of my favorites in one short video..John Prine,Hunter S Thompson, and Bill Murray!
Awesome comment right there ^
Agree Amy.
Huh?
The only thing better would be if the story ended with, “and then Warren Zevon showed up.” Alas the story is still fantastic
false
Bill Murray. You are lookin good. Thanks for the inspiration.
One night we played charades. I thought I had the perfect song name to win the game: Sabu visits the Twin Cities Alone" but they still got it! On a happier note, a good friend loved "Hello In There" and do did I. I think it cemented one of my favorite relationships. I still love that song.
RIP John. Been streaming my Prine playlist nonstop the last week or so.
R I P John Prine, u were truly one of a kind
💐Rest in Peace, John Prine💐your music is a gift and is eternal
Love John Prine! And love Bill Murray! ❤❤
What a beautiful story to honor John Prine’s legacy.

Surely was. I saw some amazing artists in that sweet little space. John and Steve will always stand out for me, but I have a long list...
saw Steve Goodman back-up Steve Martin during his "bunny-ear" period. It was a fun time!
Thanks Bill, I'll check it out.
My heart sank when I heard John was sick. I send my prayers to his family so get well soon John because we need you. God bless.
John Prine is a National Treasure. I love his music . He has true humility. “ In spite of Ourselves “ is one of his best.
that’s the way the world goes round, you’re up one day the next you’re down, it’s half an inch of water, and you think your gonna drown.....then happy enchiladas come to mind and I smile 😃 thank you John
Bill, big fan and have been for many years. Would shake your hand and thank you for your unselfish thank you to John Prine.
Hello in There
Angel from Montgomery
Those songs could not be anymore perfect but geez they are all gems.
But he was also his unique self and this world was graced by his presence, his stories, and his amazing talent.
wonderful.
I've always admired, followed and loved you Bill... Thanx for your honesty and wisdom ✌💙
Indeed an outstanding performer was blessed to see him live at Landmark in syracuse ny 2019
John was my third cousin. It makes me feel so prideful of my family that he touched so many people!!!
You obviously didn’t know him, he might be my third cousin too. Egotistical move to make your entire comment (about a dead guy beloved by millions) all about YOUR FAMILY CONNECTIONS AND YOUR PRIDE. you suck
I'm feeling this way about Summer's End. Thank you John! "I owe you one"
I have loved JOHN PRINE since 1978
I saw John Prine at the Ottawa Folk festival a few years back. I was sold from that moment on.
Pure genius!...(Prine and Murray)
First time in Chicago in the 70s. Last saw him in Tampa in the 90s. Sad to think I can’t see him again. RIP dear sir.
Bill, that's a great story, thanks for sharing.
Oodles of light, what a beautiful sight
Both of God's eyes are shining tonight
Raising beams of incredible dreams
And I'm a quiet man
Are the lyrics that drew me in so many years ago. John Prine is the greatest!
Thats a great tune, think it say rays and beams of incredible dreams
Thanks Liam, after all these years of singing it incorrectly, I now know.
bruce legge Has happened to all of us, John even talks about this on stage sometimes, lol.
John Prine comforts me. R.I.P. Mr. Prine. Thanks for the amazing music. 🎶🎶🎵🎶🎶
It’s addicting listening to him, unfortunately, most artists today have no inspiration and no talent for music.
Is this your favorite song?
"So I owe you one." Perfectly said.
Nice hearing all that! John's lyrics just stay with you for a lifetime! Eventually, as Bill learned, our hearts get in the 'icehouse' and no better way to get out than with JP's music and 'tales'.
