Great performance - It's the first I'm hearing this orchestra and it is impressive. Stephen Hough is a great pianist and a fine writer. I am currently reading his book "Rough Ideas" and it is so interesting to read his thoughts on all things music and performing. I love this concerto and this performance was wonderful.

Stephen Hough is a real artist: he is a painter and a writer, as you said, which is a great advantage already. Plus he plays with beautiful touch. His playing is always full of ideas and inspiration. I think he also became a great pianist thanks to his knowledge of other arts, as I said the painting and the writing, and composition too! This makes him a great pianist and an exquisite human being.
I find it a very mildly perverse discomfort that Stephen Hough is so remarkable and that all I have is an above average IQ.
If I could paint as well as Stephen Hough I'd be thrilled! I have 2 of his pictures framed on my wall, 'Frosty Morning' and 'Green Passage'.

Is there anything Mr Hough is incapable of transforming from the often hackneyed into an exciting, enlightening and gripping occasion. His double trills are scary, the passagework powerful and truly Brahmsian and revelatory. His ensemble with the other protagonists is truly that of a chamber musician but the piano truly holds its own. Memorable performance!

The cellist in the third movement is Sigurgeir Agnarsson. Mister Agnarsson has been with the orchestra for most of his professional career. He is in demand as a soloist, and he performs with chamber groups in Iceland.]
The oboist is Julia Hantschel, who has been a member of various orchestras before coming to Iceland, and who also is in demand as a soloist.

As I studied the orchestral score at A-Level back in the day, it has forever been a part of me and therefore I can really appreciate the work that Stephen Hough has put into this fine performance. The technique is right on point and I love the way Stephen connects with this music, with both delicacy and vigour. 😄
Yes, it,s a joy to hear Mr. Hough once more. It is also a delight to hear and watch a conductor invest a beloved concerto with her own obvious enthusiasm and that something that elevates it to a new level Brava!

Is it just me or is this version a bit slow...
No it's not you. It is slower than any I've heard. I didn't mind it at first. But after a while, it begins to sound a little stodgy. And then he plays Traumerai for his encore too fast!?! Try Bruno Leonardo Gelber and Nelson Freire for the Brahms. Neither is live. But each is spectacular!

Who gives a flying ‘eff about a horn slip? It’s a goddamn live performance. If you’re looking for imperfection you will always find it but what a stupid way to listen to music. And by the way, the horn is probably the most difficult and demanding brass instrument to play bar none. Try it sometime. If something like this bothers you then stick to studio recordings where digital editing covers up all sins. There’s nothing more electrifying than a live performance.

Overreact much? The original comment by ascv3246 can not in anyway be read as a criticism of the horn playing. Merely a fairly neutral observation that a minor mistake had been edited out.
As it is, I agree with you, Lawrence Krupp, about the difficulties of playing the french horn, it requires a fine ear and demands embouchure and breathing control far and above any other wind instrument. This particular opening must require nerves of steel.
I think that it is a shame if there was a slip and it was edited out (I couldn't tell, there was certainly no audible mistake in the horn opening and the horn player himself gave nothing away visually). Because I agree with you that live performance is exciting in a way that studio recordings can't be.

I didn't even notice...perhaps I'll pay more attention next time I play the video...Cause there's gonna be a next time, for sure..This performance deserves more than one encore..First time I hear this orchestra, and so far, just by the first movement, I'm at awe....Excellent!
By the time I got to 30:00 in the video, I knew that the conductor, who had impressed me in some earlier passages, missed the character of Brahms, the culture that his music reflected, and was delivering a palid version of this work. Both the pianist and the conductor were superficially good in this music, but ultimately not fit for it. I'd recommend Mrazek&Swarowsky, Richter-Haaser&Karajan, and Gieseking& Heger (the latter being incomplete). Each of those is great in different ways and should be heard. They're all at youtube.
Emmanuel Ax, Maurizio Pollini and Emil Gilels are up titanic in this work which needs more allegro than this conductor is giving it. I feel Stephen Hough is being held back here. Brahms needs more macho, please!
