Somehow in my mind’s eye, when I’m in the Barrens I always see it in lifelike detail, even when I was in original Classic. I think it’s the wind and the low key music and the hints of lore in the landscape. I was on Druid and completely into Tauren. The Tauren story of Druids is the true one.
@@brendamobley I feel you. This video is becoming my mediation music lately. It pulls me back into that headspace of when I was playing in this zone. "I grew up here" hahaha. Im making a playlist with all the nostalgic zones for me as Tauren player.
Listening to this hits nostalgia hard. Late nights running through the Barrens in vanilla avoiding groups of mobs and alliance raids.. so many memories
Today, the Alliance came to Orgrimmar and killed and mocked them randomly These days, my friends don't fight, they just watch. It's so sad that it's different from before. No one fights.
Part of me wonders if I would have such fondness for Vanilla if the Cataclysm never happened. Of course Vanilla is great for countless reasons, and especially for the adventures experienced with friends. And though I was excited to play Cataclysm, it took time to realize that it destroyed far more than it “fixed” about the Vanilla zones. Not being able to go back to vanilla (until Classic) was a mistake.
I LOVE THIS ZONE. Great for levelling either in the classic version or the post-Cata version. As far as music goes, I generally prefer the classic themes, and I like that they're heavily used in the retail zone too. The Tauren themes are a nice addition, definitely some of the better themes added in Cata. The Nelf/Hyjal stuff doesn't fit the zone though. Story wise it makes sense for the Alliance to establish a presence, but for me the Barrens will always be the home of the Horde. I'll never not give the thumbs up, but for regular listening I'll be sticking to the classic Barrens as my day-to-day soundtrack :)
Thank you for the feedback. It's a bit too late and I've included the Hyjal Walk now. But I felt it's the only track which I can add in Mor'shan Rampart in Retail since it's at the border with Ashenvale. I've also filmed at the minimum the Alliance zones in Barrens, but they are at least 50% in Southern Barrens. /bow
@@Meisio Not a criticism of you or your video, but of Blizzard's choices regarding the music. It seems like they had a certain number of themes composed for Cataclysm, with obvious focus on the new zones, and then felt the need to shoehorn some of them into reworked classic zones. Sometimes it worked, sometimes not. I just feel that if a theme is reused in multiple places then it loses some of its identity. I get that there isn't unlimited time or budget for developing an expansion, but I can dream of an ideal world where there is, can't I? :D
@@Esperi74 This is where I propose the job of "Azeroth Product Manager", where there's a person who can go back and ask for certain changes (stuff which made sense at some point, but not anymore, and it can be improved in later expansions with very few resources). I would happily do this job btw.
At first i really disliked the new songs added with cataclysm. But it ... kind of grew on me. And i'm now feeling nostalgic the same way i felt nostalgic for vanilla a few years ago. Won't come back for cataclysm classic™ tough 😅
The Southern Barrens tracks are very inspired by the old Barrens Dry tracks. To be honest, WoW no matter the expansion feels nostalgic to me. Just because I am not that young anymore, or because I don't have that time, and in general I associate WoW with my youth.
That's true. But I like this recent version of view distance, because at least the views are well done nowadays. I prefer the fog of war from Classic though, just like you.
To be fair, I bet many people were interested in remaking Barrens (and other lands) into a more diverse, nuanced land since it was always considered a painful experience to level up there. Only with time did we realize that's what made it special. Unfortunately, developers and fans of many works STILL make similar mistakes.

As it goes nowadays, they even try to bully whoever expresses the slightest argument tht points to a disagreement (total or not, it actually doesn't matter much, judging from my experiences).
