    Am I the only one who believes that it would be much cheaper for the manufacturers to build better RV than to spend money fixing rigs after sale? Not to mention the bad reputations that comes along with it.

      Apparently not the manufacturers. They’d rather cover up their mistakes than watch for actual quality control and make overall design improvements. Pretty on the outside; shoddy workmanship on the inside. So sad this seems to affect usually financially independent folks who can afford to cave and get things fixed on their own or wait for future long distance appointments!

    Stress fractures? As a retired Boeing 747 captain, I look at these big class A monsters, and wonder why anyone who wanted a stress free life would be driving one of them without realizing… They need a team of mechanics to keep it rolling… It’s just physics👀

    Liz, Thank you so much for taking these RV manufacturers to task. It’s absolutely ridiculous what many RV owners have been through trying to get their problems resolved. It’s too bad Tiffin didn’t own up to their responsibilities when Steve & Julia first brought the motor home in for repair. I’m so tired of the “COVID Excuse” as to why the manufacturers put out inferior products.

    • @njlauren
      @njlauren 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It isn't covid, this is manufacturers producing a poor product because they are trying to maximize profits no matter the cost to quality. Call it stockholder management, call it what you want, it is why we have so much made that is basically throw away due to making it in China or other third world countries.
      That tiffin knew about the slide problems and didn't tell repair places about the problem and fixes/ workaround tells the tale of how they are run. How many times did the US auto makers lose massive lawsuits for knowingly selling cars with major problems...

      These are too complicated, unproven products rushed to production in a foreign land(primarily China)and when they determine the flaw they may provide an incompatible replacement part. That being said I think people want to many amenities in an over the road vehicle that would be challenging to have in a stationary home. There are no standards for the industry to follow like an automobile and try as the may to help you all theses factors make nearly impossible for dealers and service centers keep up with much less better able to predict what the problems might be in order to correct them. There is a reason that there is a DEALERS class action lawsuit against these manufacturers. They rushed these to market to keep up with the after COVID demand and essentially made really crappy product in their zeal to make money. Add to that worthless warranties I feel will severely damage the RV industry as whole for years to come. I’ve worked on this garbage for over 5 years now and it’s sickening the crap they sell people. I personally own a ‘97 Coleman pop up and are thankful for the 25 years relatively trouble free years. That’s what the manufacturers sold out on.

    I had a class-A diesel pusher and it was a royal money pit. I had to replace the fridge, the washer/dryer, the sofa, a window. And then major chassis issues. I was on a trip up to Alaska and lost my fuel pressure pump and had a slide freeze up. I ended up selling it. I now have a class-B that has been relatively worry free. One of the major problems with a class-A is that since there are so many gizmos there’s just that much more to break. My class-B has no slides so it’s basically the same chassis as the basic Promaster. I have a wet-bath, heater/water-heater, fridge/freezer, convection microwave, sink, and burners. It might be small, but it has taken me to places that I simply wouldn’t have dared to take my class-A. Also I can have the oil changed at a Jiffy Lube so it’s much easier to maintain.

    • @melissal3383
      @melissal3383 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      We had a C class, then a Super C, then did EXACTLY what you did. Small B, no slides. No cutaway chassis. We like the freedom to stop where ever we feel like, sleep & bring food but the big ones are NOT worth it!!
      Our Super C was rather worry free, slides never broke. but we found ourselves not using it because jumping in the large a SUV/ truck was just easier & faster . It was a relief to downsize plus when it’s parked in our driveway, we use it more!!! This couple should have stuck with their TT… so so stressful.

    • @russelllindley9269
      @russelllindley9269 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The problems they are having are real and listening to them describe the problems it sounds like the slide issue is the only problem that should have been addressed by Tiffin before it left the factory. Most of the other issues are things that just happen when you own an RV. I’m not saying Tiffin doesn’t have a responsibility to correct the problems especially the fiberglass cracking on the side and the roof, but a lot of their problems are to be expected. I would say that it’s the service center from where they purchased the unit that has the real problem. When you take an RV back to the point of sale and it stays in the service department for 2,3 or more months to be fixed and you pick the unit up with the same or even more issues than you took it in for it’s incompetence on the service centers part. The service manager should get his act together and make sure all problems are corrected when the customer returns an RV for repairs.
      When you do find a service department that stands behind a product that has been sold by their own sales department please let us know.

    Yippee it's late Friday afternoon so Liz video time. What a nice young couple. Very excited that when you got involved they stepped up but disappointed that they didn't do so earlier. Shows the power of Liz. The easiest, cheapest and overall best solution for anyone in the service industry is to simple ask what do you want and then do it. I speak on this from a couple of decades of experience. First it is the right thing to do and second you can't buy enough advertising to come close to the word of mouth you get when say it, mean it and then do it. Just a side note is in order to do this you better make them right to begin with or the company will go broke. Anyway another great job Miss Liz and looking forward to hear the update for that great family. Such a nice story about the family interacting out on their trips versus being walled off at the house.

As someone with training in quality management it boils my blood when I hear ppl blaming workers,especially when many of the ppl saying this are working ppl who know what management is like, yet I hear things like ppl don't want to work, they are on drugs. It is what certain politicians go around saying when the reason is greed, blame the workers. The US auto industry did that for decades , blamed the workers, until US workers making Japanese cars produced products as good or better than made in Japan and Roger Smith became a punch line.

      The nice places, guess what?? You have to reserve a YEAR in advance at midnight. Don’t do it!!! We ONLY have one to go from point A to B. And have downsized from a super C on Big Truck chassis to a Small 24’ B van. We bought the rv, then got tired of looking for rv spots SO far in advance. So looked into RV lot ownership but those were skyrocketing in price to 300k upwards! We threw up our hands. It was crazy! So we bought a winter home in FL. Dumped the huge RV after 5 years. I will ALWAYS caution people against it. I won’t lie. State parks are wonderful. But buy a USED rv, built before Covid. Dare I say before recession. Those seem to be the ones built super well. This is NOT like the car industry where newer is better. In fact, the car industry is starting to slide as well….

    I have a 21 year old Tiffin Phaeton I just bought. No cracks, but I'm replacing some major stuff: shore power / generator switch, Xantrex Freedom convertor / charger, forward airbags, all shocks, toilet room floor, perhaps some tanks, [postscript- the tanks seem to be OK -] an annual lube/oil/service. Still, we bought it for 1/10 the price of a new one, so it will end up costing somewhere between 15% and 20% of a new one. The Cat Diesel and Onan generator will outlive me. Bob Tiffin was a stand up guy, but Thor, which bought his company, is not so much so. I'm actually glad I don't have a brand new one. As far as the interviewed owners go, it's important whether the cracks are just in the gel coat (minor issue,) or through the laminate, (major issue.) Gel coat is essentially a brittle paint. Fiberglass reinforcement is structural, and could lead to rot in underlying plywood.
    If I were buying a new RV today, (which I wouldn't,) I would demand an escrow account for the last 20% of the price for 1 year to ensure that real fixes to the factory defects were properly fixed. The dream of "new and perfect" is just that - a dream. In today's economy, what with Covid's aftermath and low unemployment = inexperienced workers, new = defective.

    Thank you Liz. Tiffin was the only brand i was considering to purchase new. And now that I listened to the end of the story I would say that it's great to hear that Tiffin was actually likely already working with Lippert on the slide fix. Not something a lot of other brands would even consider. My last new RV was a 2015, and I had very minor, fixable things that I learned to take care of myself. Never missed a trip over 5 year period of traveling 5 - 6 weeks each spring summer fall. That was a Jayco C class. Loved every moment of those trips with our family.

    Tiffin and frankly all RV manufacturers allowed the quality to suffer during the COVID window, so 2021 & 2022 rigs are very poor quality. And Tiffin has a serious backlog of repair appointments & many employees were let go and the Wayfarer service facility closed in 2023/2024. Maybe the Thor ownership influence??

    Glad you got something done for them. Here in California I cannot just "drive to Red Bay" for service. The authorized service center here did not want to deal with Tiffin's structural warranty claim. They told me to pay them and then work it out with Tiffin. Reason, they could not afford the time on hold with Red Bay working out the warranty claim. I did not pursue it and just live with most of the problems - fixed one out of pocket.
    I've known a few people out here that had pages of problems on new rigs and also got Tiffin to come get the rig, fix it and then return it. Tiffin warranty and service is awesome if you can go to Red Bay.
    The small stress cracks on the sides are very common on Tiffins. That's the first I've seen of a roof crack. The big gassers do have problems with bad welds between the "box" and the chassis. Over time, Tiffins will also develop problems between the front and rear caps where they meet the sidewalks. All things to look for on used rigs.

The frame has a tendency to twist which breaks the outer coating of the fiberglass. Your original video was about dealer service and I commented Bob Tiffin was a "God" of customer service. I was last in Red Bay in April of 2023 and was forced to leave before all the repairs were completed because of health issues. I had an Aqua Hot that did not work. I had it at LazyDays for 3 months before leaving for Phoenix; there I had three different Aqua Hot techs come out and work on it. Tiffin's techs and Aqua Hot helpline suggested Red Bay and Red Bay was 1650 miles out of the way, but Red Bay was the answer. I had a short meeting with Bob Tiffin and he called a customer service foreman and told them to completely replace the unit on his "dime" because Aqua Hot does not want to do a complete replacement. I called him before I owned a Tiffin and as recently as a couple of months ago and have had him always call me back promptly. They've also extended the warranty on our unit because of my health issues. Bob Tiffin is still there every morning at 4:30am and he'll return our call.
    In my time at Red Bay I heard many stories about Bob's graciousness and met many employees who all care as much as he does.

    Liz, another excellent video. Your channel does a great service. I feel for Steve and Julia. In the summer of 2021 we traded in our Forest River motorhome. It too had stress cracks on both slides in the exact same way. It was repaired and cracked again. It also had nearly 50,000 miles and on our coach , it was thought the cracks occurred from misaligned slides and overloading of the coach.
    We wanted to purchase a Tiffin 36LA. We got very close to buying over a 10 day period. But the build quality disappointed us compared to our friends 2018.
    We opted to go with a little smaller and more basic Winnebago 29V.
    We had some issues but NOTHING like the one in this video.
    We now have 36,000 miles on it, but did make two trips to the factory for a list of repairs . While it was expensive to make the 3000 mile round trip, our experience with them was excellent . Winnebago stepped up, and even helped us with out of warranty work. . Maybe we’ve been lucky, and glad Tiffin stepped up in this case.
    It’s not ALL BAD, but the industry definitely should be head and shoulders above what we are getting.

    Liz, you are giving all RV owners hope that one day manufacturers improve their products. It’s still sad manufacturers just don’t offer that kind of help from the beginning. I continuously read and see on TH-cam that certain items installed and these RVs can continuously fail and the manufacturer just keep installing them. It’s beyond me why they do that but I guess making the almighty dollar is the goal and not providing a good product is priority ONE. I hope the federal against Thro changes how Warranties are addressed by all manufacturers.

    Thanks Liz for all you do to help so many folks with so many issues from so many different brands. We have had two travel trailers that we bought new and had very few issues one was a 2011 and then we went bigger in 2014. After a few years with the last trailer we retired and thought we would make a switch to a class A motor home. We were not sure we'd like it so we opted to buy an older unit in good shape. We ended up with an oldie a 1996 Fleetwood Bounder 34j model. We have now traveled with this for three years including three 6000 mile trips and we have had almost no problems other than really extremely minor things. We would like to upgrade now to a nearly new class A but after watching the many challenges that people are having we wonder if we'd just be better off staying the course with this old Bounder. I guess I would recommend to anyone new to RVing to consider an older one to start with as we have never missed a trip or had a breakdown that stopped us from our destination. We've had several folks walk up to us at campgrounds and literally warn us not to buy a new one as we will be shocked at the possible issues with so many of the brands. So we continue to look at new ones but we're actually very leary as we have had such good luck with this oldie. Thanks again for all you do! We enjoy each video but feel so bad for these folks who buy these rigs that appear to be poorly built.
