well since most of the world cups having been held in europe, most recently in russia, i can guarantee that with the success of Qatar, it'll will be held in Saudi Arabia and if people disagree, then stop accepting middle eastern oil and gas which your country relies on in order to keep already higher expenses even low. SaudiArabia will probably offer oil/gas deals to western governments for their support of the tournament and before you say that's illegal, well, the french promised their vote for the usa 2022 bid but qatar offered more to the french what usa could. so it's all fair as it's just good business that matters.

When the host selection for the 1996 Summer Olympics rolled, many considered the snubbing of Athens in favour of Atlanta as very odd, considering that the first Olympics in their modern look back in 1896 were held in Athens and the US had hosted the Olympics 12 years ago. It turned out that Atlanta-based companies such as CocaCola (conveniently one of the sponsors of the Olympics) lobbied to the IOC for Atlanta to be given the hosting rights. This case shows that one candidate might be perfect for historical resons, but that is not always a sure thing. And to be honest it was excess to add Chile and Paraguay to the bid - Argentina and Uruguay on their own was fine
Unless the countries are really small, I don't agree with joint bids.
I love the World Cup host really selling their culture, their identity and having the World Cup as their own and keeping that as the theme of the Tournament.
Having a list of different countries hosting just feels like their culture is diluted.
It's a way to split the costs though. These things get very expensive...
I also prefer having only one host country, but it’s too expensive esp now that they’re rxpanding the participating countries. I still prefer two instead of four though.
I bet FIFA regrets not selecting Morocco instead of North America. Would have been great to capitalize on the momentum created by them at this World Cup. Moroccans showed their support in Qatar and stadiums would easily fill up in 2026. MISSED OPPORTUNITY

That's a great idea! I'd like to hear that too. I imagine it's due to political or societal reasons. Is football popular in East Africa? I don't know, but it would be interesting to learn the reason why so few players come from that region.

These condescending and low key racist comments got it all wrong, it has more to do with all the federations and football owners of the league are within that country. If both officials from the fútbol federations and the club owners are more concerned with pocketing investment $$ rather than investing into the infrastructure, like many federations below the top 20 of the FIFA rankings, than it's really up to the fans or someone within that system to care enough to make the proper changes to make a more competitive national league and national team.

@@Mesjach It's actually not too far in travelling wise though. All of the main cities (Buenos Aires, Santiago de Chile, Asuncion, Montevideo, Cordoba) are within 2.5 hours by plane. Not as bad as the Brazil or Russia WC in that sense.

Too bad it isn’t economically viable. Paraguay is a very poor place with low development, African levels of poverty. Argentina is about to hit an economic meltdown thanks to decades of abysmally bad governments. And Chile and Uruguay aren’t exactly swimming in money either, both of these nations have unlaced roads as something normal.
I had been hoping for a Spain, Portugal + Morocco bid but UEFA didn't back it.
Bloody shame as Western Europe hasn't had a WC since 2006, Portugal has never hosted and Morocco has bid multiple times but come up short. As much as I love Ukraine, adding their name to the bid is just self sabotage.

Since the 2026 WC tournament will be hosted in Canada, Mexico and America, My city of Houston Texas will get to host some games. As for 2030 tournament the four South American countries should host it because the year 2030 marks the 100 year anniversary of the inaugural tournament. Argentina has not hosted a world cup since 1978 and I would like my cousins and fellow Argentines from my generation to experience their country hosting such a prestige tournament.

How is this "strange"..? Many footballers advertise Western tourism and products without criticism despite the fact that many "human rights abuses" which Western media have accused Middle Eastern countries of happen regularly here in the West.

Japan/South Korea was the pilot, we’ve had EUFA hold a Euros across Poland/Ukraine, then plan to hold Euro 2020 across the whole of Europe.
Qatar has now shown the model for a World Cup, even down to building a stadium from shipping containers that’s deconstructed after use!
The West wants to hate on Qatar, but this WC has been nothing short of perfect.

@@thomasrichards3760 Perfect is too strong a word. I am American so I am aware of our problems. I still don't quite get your point as Qatar was held in Doha and Lusail almost exclusively and those two cities are right next to each other proving how a city concept could work. I was favorable to the Benelux bid for 2018 or 2022. As far as Europe goes those 3 are on top of each other so having the players get from Amsterdam to Brussels isn't a problem. The problem with North America in general is its size but the US hosted in 1994 and is the main host this time (sadly).
But stadiums that close to each other become useless after the tournament. Plus they cost 4000 lives to build.

It has been the logic of geo-politics and sports unfortunately. Disguise heinous acts under the guise of multiculturalism and any kind of pushback is seen as either western intervention or racist(despite many of the criticisms happening in states outside the west)

@@sturgeon2888 idk, most western countries are peaceful, have a high standard of living and are strong liberal democracies. The UK, US (if you want to call that a western democracy, I wouldn't) and, to a lesser extent, France are awful when it comes to global intervention, but most of the west lead by example and learn from their previous atrocities, which does give them the moral high ground against nations that still perform the same atrocities, and whose refugees all seek the west.

I've loved Messi for years, he's been my favorite player but his connection to these states & controversial figures just leaves a bad taste, and I fear he might do damage to his legacy in the years to come, and all for what, a few extra million bucks? He already has everything and all the money in the world. I always hoped he would emulate an athlete like Federer, such a clean figure with no controversial sponsors (that I can think of). Pele had accusations that he took money intended to UNICEF (reported in 2020) as an example. I think a lot of people see these sporting greats as deities. They're as fragile and flawed as the rest of us, and if they're a footballer from South America, chances are they grew up in poverty and have a completely different set of values compared to many. Tennis, and especially in Europe is more middle class so its no wonder Federer has kept himself away from controversy. I'm guessing he had things in his life growing up that a lot of kids his age didn't.

Why can't we just have 1 country hosting a world cup, why is it suddenly only joint bids.
I think since 1998 it has become join bids. its because join bids have more chances of winning the host... Qatar is the only exception since it has sooooooooooo much influence on world stage than many realize.
I think the main thing is the sunk cost of hosting. Most world cups or Olympics cost around 8-14bn, while Qatar was 220 with a lot of infrastructure costs included. Joint bids make financial sense but come with logistical issues
Look up what happened to stadiums after the 2014 World Cup hosted by Brazil. They built a ton of infrastructure and stadiums to host the matches, only for a majority of them to go unused afterwards.
Or look at the most recent World Cup in Qatar, where they didn't have nearly enough lodging and food services, and built a ton of temporary structures.
Joint bidding is as much about utilizing existing infrastructure and spread costs as allowing more countries be highlighted.
It's so interesting that this basically sets up a international moral quandary, does Messi follow patriotism and tradition or does he let the money get the best of him?

Idk about Maradona, he has pictures hanging out with the biggest narcos and mass murderers in South American history.
