Lionel Messi is an icon. A footballing icon, and an Argentinian icon. He will be central to Argentina’s joint bid to host the 2030 World Cup. However his paid ambassadorship with Saudi Arabia will complicate things.
Why is his ambassador agreement with Saudi Arabia so controversial, why it is a conflict of interest, and why is it not what it seems?

well since most of the world cups having been held in europe, most recently in russia, i can guarantee that with the success of Qatar, it'll will be held in Saudi Arabia and if people disagree, then stop accepting middle eastern oil and gas which your country relies on in order to keep already higher expenses even low. SaudiArabia will probably offer oil/gas deals to western governments for their support of the tournament and before you say that's illegal, well, the french promised their vote for the usa 2022 bid but qatar offered more to the french what usa could. so it's all fair as it's just good business that matters.

When the host selection for the 1996 Summer Olympics rolled, many considered the snubbing of Athens in favour of Atlanta as very odd, considering that the first Olympics in their modern look back in 1896 were held in Athens and the US had hosted the Olympics 12 years ago. It turned out that Atlanta-based companies such as CocaCola (conveniently one of the sponsors of the Olympics) lobbied to the IOC for Atlanta to be given the hosting rights. This case shows that one candidate might be perfect for historical resons, but that is not always a sure thing. And to be honest it was excess to add Chile and Paraguay to the bid - Argentina and Uruguay on their own was fine

If both officials from the fútbol federations and the club owners are more concerned with pocketing investment $$ rather than investing into the infrastructure, like many federations below the top 20 of the FIFA rankings, than it's really up to the fans or someone within that system to care enough to make the proper changes to make a more competitive national league and national team.

How many bombs did they drop on women and children in Iraq, Afghanistan, Vietnam, Hiroshima, Nagasaki and beyond? How many leaders have they assassinated for political reasons? How many prisoners die in custody or police shootings?
You can shrug and say 'stop the whataboutery, that's bad too' but it merely exposes your hypocrisy given you haven't and won't criticise England in the same way during the Euros last year and the USA during the next World Cup. This is really interesting and really necessary content. You must continue to produce it. Big thanks to Adam Crafton for writing the original piece on the Athletic - I hope that Tifo are able to produce a version of his brilliant submission on his experience covering the World Cup in Qatar from an LGBTQ+ perspective. It's too moving, too incisive and too illuminating to stay behind a paywall forever.

As great as a player he is, off the field he is dodgy, constantly dodging his taxes, has no moral compass when it comes to who he associates with, and projects like he is clean living guy, least Maradona was fully in with his lore of being a rebel. This guy would do anything for money with any fiend.

Idk about Maradona, he has pictures hanging out with the biggest narcos and mass murderers in South American history. As much as coining him as a rebel sounds cool he also seemed to have extremely dodgy relationships. Although I do agree that Messi puts out an image of ethical purity he clearly either doesn’t care enough to do his own research into the people and associations he gets in business with or worse he knows but doesn’t care enough to not accept the money that comes with supporting them.

What is Tifo trying to allege here with the title? This is just my opinion, but Europeans seem quite salty since the beginning and till the World Cup ended.
