    Gear:
    2019 Marshall SV20H
    2019 Marshall SV212 (Celestion V-type)
    1973 Marshall JMP 50 Lead Model 1987
    1971 Marshall 4x12 Model 1960A (Celestion G12M25 75Hz T1221 Pulsonic)
    2008 Gibson Les Paul R9

    Small tube heads are super comfy, and the SC and SV series from Marshall are no doubt some of the coolest mini heads you can buy now, especially for the price (in europe at least). With that said, the good old big guys are imho another sport, and especially at high volumes you can definitely hear the differences.

    Waiting for the 20SV getting tested with that 412. In this clip, with those configurations, the 1987x just destroys the 20SV, but, as said, I would be surprised if not a large portion of delta comes from the cab

      I ran my Origin 20H through a 412 and it sounded huge on the 3w setting. It's different from the SV20, but if my Origin sounded great through a 412, I don't doubt that the SV20 will too, if not more so.

      I play an SV20 into a broken-in 1960B cab with green backs from the 1980s from an old JCM900 stack and it brings so much warmth and soft dynamics to the tone. Really rounds off that sharp harsh plexi sound vs the 2x12

    I look forward to hearing both heads in the same cab. Sonically speaking, they were pushing out the frequencies but the speakets were filtering alot out. I bet that small head would breath alot better with 4 low watt speakers to push.

    Thank you for taking the time to do this comparison. Also, you have one hell of a collection Johan! Ive been watching your videos for a while now, and I am amazed by the gear you have! You are a great custodian of these vintage pieces. And I am thank full that you share your collection with the world. I purchased an sv20h. I was hesitant, considering the pcb kindof built amp this is. Im always weary of moderen cheaply build gear. But..... you know what... im happy with the amp it sounds great and it just re confirmed to me, you cant listen with your eyes. Thank you johan! Keep up the great work, .cheers

    Power and size can be hard to compensate for and there are differences, mainly in the lower range as you mentioned. I think the SV stack holds up surprisingly well to the 1987/1960, also in dynamics and play/pick sensitivity.
    You made a very good summary of the tonal differences, describing why this Stuido range is so popular. Obviously, and luckily, there is still competence in the Marshall company.
    Really looking forward to hear the SV through your different cabs. That's also useful for us SV20H owners, looking for alternative cabs or speakers.

    Well , the Monster Amp from 1973 is in my opinion pretty much unbeatable. I have the SV20 Head and it is a great amp, but i did not like the SV cabinet , so I went for the Marshall 2061cx 60 watt 2x12 cabinet with G12H- 30W Greenbacks . It truly gives the SV 20 Head full justice, and another level of sonic rock`n`roll power.

    I have the studio vintage and just like in this video, it feels restrained compared to fixed bias amps. The cathode bias is really annoying because my whole thing was trying to get the brown sound and that requires a fixed bias and variac down to 70 volts or so (not 90 like everyone thinks). I plug my SV20 into a variac and it sounds exactly the same as not having it in a variac. I also have fixed bus Marshall’s and thanvariac makes a huge difference when getting into the 80 volt down to 65 volt range. The JMP 50 watt in this sounds so much more open, if that makes sense; more aggressive, louder, boosted.

    Let's not forget the old amp into the new cab and new amp into the old cab test 😄The V Type is a satisfying speaker in the Greenback realm, but by design is also slightly harsher than the traditional Greenback (I don't own one of those, but I compared the V Type to a G12M Heritage).
    I preferred different amp/cabs combinations at different points of the video. That tells me both amps are objectively good delivering results and you would just choose one based on preference.

    An analogy you could make would be that the '73 JMP 50 is like the raw, unfiltered older brother, while the studio vintage is like the wide eyed, clean shaven younger brother. Those early 70s jmp's are killer, and I love how raw they sound! But the studio vintage certainly has its merit, and was a really good choice for marshall. Yeah it doesn't really sound that much like the originals, but it has a much more classic marshall sound than other modern marshall amps.

  • @bobjoe7508
    @bobjoe7508 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I guess for one, the studio vintage is a lot tighter and has a smaller sound. The original has a lot more punch and is a lot more aggressive. I guess for lack of a better term, the 1973 marshall just has more balls. The new one still sounds great, especially when cranked. I think you could get the studio vintage to sound more old school by sticking a boost pedal or a boss eq pedal to boost it. I appreciate your comments on the differences between the 'in the room' sound and the recorded sound.

  • @Wolf_K
    @Wolf_K 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great series, Johan! I look forward to all SV/SC vids you may do.
    What I’ve noticed with my own SV 2x12 cab is it lacks a little something (and sounds a little muffled) and would very likely benefit from being a partially open back.
    For an experiment I used my twin reverb/speakers as an open back cab and the amp (SC20H) came alive with more bass and open sounding. It changed the frequencies for the better. Different speakers, of course, so that must be considered. However, all open vs closed back demos I’ve listened to share that quality I observed with my own.
    I plan to make a new open back panel for mine to get that larger less restricted sound from the SV cab.
    Also, the SC20H does a pretty good SV20H plexi sound if you set it right.

    I'm also fortunate to own both sv and sc20 heads together with their old 100 watt counterparts. imho they did an amazing job. hard to beat. The only thing one can't get by is the fact the big ones just have a certain 'authority', which I found is the best way to describe it. The sv20, not to be underestimated... you need an attenuator to get to the goods hehe. but once you are there it is pretty impressive. then put an sd1 in front, and my emg81 RG brings me into shred zone... incredible little beasts.

    I think you kind of compiled a great scientific program with these permutations ;) I like. To me, owning already a 1987x, I have to say that I had a completely different "in room" experience then the one you describe. I found the SV20H saturated too early, not punchy enough, and the cab is not holding up to any of my 4x12 cabinets, no matter if with greenbacks, creambacks or the "harsh" stuff from the 80ies ;). I tried get some of the EVH tones out of it and failed badly. that might be reasonedd in my incompetence but usually even then there is a grain of truth in it. Keep on rockin my friend ..

    I compared my SV20H to my 1987x using a cab sim (Two Notes CAB-M). I can dial in all the knobs the same, but I have to patch the SV20H the other way around to get almost the same sound. I do notice that I have both volumes a lot lower with the 1987x through a 4x12" when playing with a band or recording, compared with the SV20H and a 2x12". Both great amps though!

    That jmp sounds like a Marshall. The v speakers sound really shrill. I bet if you put the studio amp on a good cab it sounds much better. Maybe a 1936 with v30’s? Thanks for the video Johan🙏🏼

    I think the Sv20 is geat! I never liked attenuators and my old 77 Superbass is getting too old and loud for gigging unfortunately, so the SV20 is a perfect gigging amp for me. The 100w JMP still reigns supreme in an A/B comparison (I always preferred 100 watters both in sound and feel), but the SV20 is something that isn't just "close enough", but the real deal in a smaller format! :D
    Just recorded an album with both and they compliment eachother really well, but I always run mine through a 4x12, have to try the 2x12 if I ever get the chance though :)
    Great work as always, Johan!
    Cheers :)

      Gillian, I have to say the best sounding Marshall I've played is an original JCM 800 100w. I owned a 50w and 100w Plexi reissue, ended up selling the 100w and kept the 50w and modded it with an extra tube (to hotten it up a little) and had a master dial installed. It is a great sounding amp but just not as full sounding as the JCM 800 100w. I'm looking and dipping my toe into the Plexi line once more with the CV20. size and weight are good for me just need a way to control the volume without spending $1000 on a brake.

    Nice demo. The Gibson pickups are where the harshness is coming from. And their harness/hardware too. I don't get that harshness with my SV20 since I'm using original 50's vintage magnet wire in my replica LP that has all correct hardware and harness, the Gibsons don't have. Plus my own replica PAF's and our Four Uncles ABR1which smokes all the bridges out there except Gibson vintage originals. Am not a fan of modern Gibson LP's, they look great but looks are just looks, and they fail to come close how the originals were. You proved that with your great video comparing orginals with all their "reissue" LP's after Gibson stopped making them. And their first re-entry LP was the truly awful LP Deluxe which I bought brand new in about '70, Got rid of it quickly too. The big Marshall has better headroom then the SV20, but I love my SV20, and its one of the best amps they've made in decades in the small wattage arena.

    Really enjoyed it, Johan. I really think a lot of the harshness can be removed by a simple mod. I know everyone can’t do that but if you have the option, it’s really much closer to a vintage amp. Dave Friedman did mine and it’s super warm and alive. I’m guessing the different speaker choices with the upcoming video will be a big improvement too. Great video! I think this amp will grow in popularity because it delivers an experience that no one has really been able to do before. Once people play through it and experience the transients and musical feedback, it’s a game changer. The larger Marshall’s are supreme but not realistic for most. This checks just about all the boxes. Dig the outdoor footage as well!

      Putting some old Mullard 12ax7s will sweeten and smooth the tone out from my experience.

      @jahjah67 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RaiderJay9092 thankfully the tube situation seems to be okay and we have new options. I’m sure you’re right about the Mullard’s but changing a Capacitor of two helps. For 70’s rock tones, the SV20 is a great choice

      @@nikolajnb3774 now that is only something Dave knows for sure. He doesn’t divulge to most what he does but my amp sounds smoother than any other SV20 I’ve heard on TH-cam. Johan’s video was excellent though. I’m pretty sure a fat cap was put into my Marshall but I’m guessing he changed some values on things to smooth out the sound. It sounds great.

    The SV20 sounded better (and more like in person) in the video you did a couple of days ago - it sounds a bit boxy/filtered here, I notice you used some different mic placements in the other video.
    As Johan says, the SV is extremely close to the JMP in the room, but the SV sounds colder when recorded. I am loving the SV212 cab at home, seems to have a good balance of frequencies and plenty of low end, maybe a little bright when stood right in front of it, but it is supposed to be a super lead, and you have both presence & treble controls to fine tune that.

    These amps are awesome but take a little dialing. Depending if you dial it right for goal will determine if your happy or not with the sound

    Would be interesting to also hear them both through the same cab. Would at least not have to move the mic etc. I guess then it would be even closer. Some people would be buying the set, head and cab, but a lot of people would already have a cab at home if they are considering buying a head. I would use my 212 G12M/V30 cab with one of these and wouldn't buy the cabs. If I did decide to buy the Studio series cab I would swap the speakers anyway just to have the nicer looking cab

    I have a request! Can you play the DI from the SV20H in to a Greenback IR? The Free one by Redwirez is killer (the one I've been using) and I'd love to hear it next to a mic'd up Greenback. I'm not expecting it to sound the same, I'm just wondering if you can get some usable tones that way. Also, are the valves pressed straight in to the board like the DSL 40 series?

    As you say, they were surprisingly close, even if the V-types in the smaller cab didn't sound that dynamic, airy and big... The 1987x and DSL20 comparisons should be very interesting, I'm most curious how the SV compares through the same cab.

    Very impressive. To my ears, the sv20 didn't really have that nice glassy top end as much as the jmp 50 and was kind of missing something in the lower frequencies, but it was pretty close and I think I would be more than happy with that rig. Can you do a video like this with a jcm 800 sc20 vs an original 2203? I can't wait to hear how the sv20 sounds with other cabs!

    would be closer.
