    Not ONE Zoom recorder should leave a shop to a new owner without links to your videos! Thousands of Zoom recorders are collecting dust because operating the equipment is at some points frustratingly difficult. Your patient and step by step explanations make operating a Zoom recorder much easier. Thanks a lot! Gerard

      For real!! That manual makes me pull what little hair I have left on my head out!! Thank you so much for the tutorials. I'm now making the music that I wanted to make without all that frustration of learning a new piece of gear. How about some tutorials on the zoom R8?? And what are your thoughts on that piece of equipment overall?

    • @stevekonbass
      @stevekonbass  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Never got my hands on one of those but I know it has a built in drum machine. Not sure how the drum samples on the R8 are, but I'm a big fan of the Zoom MRT-3. In fact, I use it on all of my songs. I used it on these: th-cam.com/video/Cih5G4ZcECo/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/4RACoyPbI6M/w-d-xo.html Great drum machine but I don't think they make them any more but sometimes you can find them on eBay.

    Thanks to your excellent tutorials I purchased an R16 Earlier this year. I'm a video hobbyist who shoots live bands and wanted better sound for my video than off camera mics were providing, so I got the r16. As i became more familiar with the ins and outs of recording live bands I realized that 8 tracks weren't enough as I need at least 5 tracks for drums alone. Hence the purchase of a 2nd R16. (and a lot of XLR splitters, cords, drum mic kit etc..) Your videos have helped tremendously in furthering my hobby. Thank you.

    Steve. I just wanted to add a comment here for those who are starting to use this machine. Without these videos I wouldn’t be where I am today as a recording artist. I recently went back and rewatched several of these videos and found yet another bit of very useful information concerning mastering and how you can use the bounce function to facilitate the highest quality of recording. Check out this work-around- it is so clever. Thanks Steve!!!

      I have a new instrumental I just completed and I used the mastering effect for the drums first, then the guitar. When I went to mix it down to a two track stereo file ( master), it wouldn’t let me use it again. The tracks sounded good but not great.. The work around that you demonstrate gave the master its life. Now I love it. Thank you!!!

    • @stevekonbass
      @stevekonbass  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don't forget, you can actually record with the effect, so you wouldn't have to bounce. Also, make sure you listen "really" closely with a good set of headphones and also a stereo because sometimes those mastering effects add quite a bit of compression, especially if you use them multiple times. You might get dips and the song might not sound consistent and smooth. I know sometimes, I catch it days later. Just wanted to throw that out there. I find that I end up using the Tight, Rock, or Maximize mastering effect depending on the song. I also like to keep dimension on, and tweak the EQ a bit giving the treble a little boost and the mid a little cut. All the mastering effects can be tweaked if you scroll through the mastering menu.

    • @AFloodofSolaceJohnWhigham
      @AFloodofSolaceJohnWhigham 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stevekonbass that’s really useful info!! Yeah, i haven’t delved too deep yet with tweaking the mastering settings. I have certain ones too that I favor. Right is always good, live is good for some songs, I do like the compression that some of these have. Overall, makes the R16 the most amazing machine ever!! I still have a lot to learn.

    • @Guitarburt
      @Guitarburt 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Actually, it occurred to me today that there's no indication on the R16 as to whether there is any data on an individual track, other than to play your project whilst listening (and perhaps watching the meter) I thought at that moment - track sheets are a MUST if you're doing a lot of projects, especially if you're going to revisit them some time later. Other (more expensive) multi trackers have graphic displays showing a time grid and dark segments where something's been recorded on every track (the old Roland VS-880, TASCAM and so on.) Being budget friendly, the ZOOM doesn't give you that. Track sheets. YEP. So far, I've recorded just ONE song on mine so far. I just got it back from my drummer who contributed 7 tracks of his part. Now to transfer these tracks to Logic...

      Two quick questions that you might know the answer to: 1) When I tried to apply a master effect (maximize, clarify, lo-fi, etc) it distorted everything---even though the master fader didn't show red-lining. Any ideas what that's about? 2) My final mix sounded as intended on headphones, but sounded like a muddy mess in the car. Do I just need studio monitors? How do I know what it actually sounds like when it sounds different depending on what I'm listening on?

    • @stevekonbass
      @stevekonbass  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah Scott, I can help you with that. When you use the master effect, set the master so it doesn't clip, and when you "listen back" to the master, pull the master fader back. My guess is your getting the distortion when you listen back. When you put the mastering effect on the song it's boosting everything and making it hotter. If you leave the master fader where it was when you mixed down when you listen back, it's gonna sound distorted and loud. As for the mix sounding muddy, that's common, even in pro studios that happens. Here's a video I did that can help you: th-cam.com/video/JuaXDv5GzwY/w-d-xo.html I recommend watching the whole thing because I go into a lot of detail on how to get the mix right, but definitely watch from the 10 minute mark to the end.

    Steve - I can't thank you enough for posting this on you tube - I bought a second-hand one to bridge the gap between analogue 4 track recording many many years ago (which I used to enjoy) and DAW recording which is beyond me. This machine is perfect - recorded 8 simultaneous tracks with the band on Thursday and mixed it today and all with your excellent step by step tutorial - much better than reading a manual and questioning is this right. We learn by doing! and with your guidance, I am over the moon with the results. Out of interest, have you moved on from this machine to the more up to date replacement, or do you still use this?

    • @stevekonbass
      @stevekonbass  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey John- Glad you like the Zoom. It's great, right? I use it all the time. They discontinued it so it's lucky that you bought a second hand one. The most recent tune I recorded was this one: th-cam.com/video/P9j2z82lCJ0/w-d-xo.html My buddy recorded the drum track up in Pennsylvania and sent it down to me. All the other instruments and vocals were plugged right into the Zoom. This gear demo video: th-cam.com/video/c8CunUqtHbw/w-d-xo.html I used the Zoom to record the whole thing. The drums were recorded with just the built in stereo mics on the Zoom, the guitar I came out of the headphone jack of an amp to the Zoom, the bass was plugged in direct, and the narration was a 58 plugged right in. I love it. I guess I have it about 7 years now and there has to be well over 1000 hours on it. I hope you get a lot of use out of yours. Your recordings will get better the more you work with it and get to know it.

    • @stevekonbass
      @stevekonbass  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hmm... I'd have to look into it. Off the top of my head if I was doing it right now I'd probably try to do it manually. Meaning I'd hit the EQ button that controls the EQ, pan, reverb, and chorus/delay for each track, and when that last word comes up I'd roll up the delay for the lead vocal track.You'd have to pick the delay you want.

      Hmm... the only way I know of to remove a song from the SD card is to go through the process of deleting it. So, if you didn't delete them, they should be there. Could be the name of the songs weren't saved, in which case it might display as a number. You can also take the SD card out of the Zoom and put it in a laptop that way you can actually see what files are on the card. Let me know how you make out.

    So faders for channels 1-8 are shared with channels 9-16 ...but what happen when you switch, say, between 2 when the fader is very low and 10 in the case it was set to very high to tweak it a little bit while mastering?

    • @stevekonbass
      @stevekonbass  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes they are shared. If you set the faders on tracks 1-8 and then switch to 9-16, the fader levels on 1-8 will stay where you left them. So when you're working on 9-16, tracks 1-8 won't be effected. I found the best way to make level adjustments once all the tracks are as close to where I want them is to hit the EQ button and select the track that I want to make an adjustment on and scroll to LEVELS. Then I can use the jog wheel to turn the level up or down and not have to use the faders.

    So while I'm recording the master, I can adjust the single track's faders, as well as the master fader (for ex. to fade in/fade out the song) and the changes are recorded in the master track?

    • @stevekonbass
      @stevekonbass  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Frank!
      Yes, you can do that. Just remember tracks 1/9, 2/10, 3/11, 4/12, 5/13, 6/14, 7/15, and 8/16 share the same fader so don't let that throw you. You can also make track volume adjustments by hitting the pan/eq button, choosing the track, use the up/down buttons and go to fader, and use the jog wheel to adjust the volume. I did 3 other Zoom R16 tutorials that you can find on my TH-cam channel. The links are also in the description box of this video. Thanks Steve. You've been a huge help. That's exactly what I wanted to know. A lot of people are crying that the R16 doesn't edit like a DAW, I'm realizing that the R16 really edits more like an advanced analog recorder. Since you can't fix every little detail, it forces you to learn to play better in the first place. That's a good thing!!! In my opinion, the best music comes from the performance, and not as much from the editing. Thanks again, and have a great day friend.

    Steve, I need a lesson or two regarding bouncing tracks and recording on tracks 9-16 (then mastering). Overall, the manual is good, but your concise explanations are much easier for me to understand. If you have time, please contact me and let me know how much you charge. (Based on this tutorial, I've sent some music to friends and they were impressed with the sound quality).

    • @stevekonbass
      @stevekonbass  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      All of that is pretty easy... bounce: click swap/bounce button and choose bounce. Set the levels for tracks you want to bounce (let's say tracks 1, 2, 3, and 4) and put them in play mode (lit green). The track you want to bounce to (let's say 8) put in record mode (lit red). Rewind the song, hit record/play and then tracks 1, 2, 3, and 4 will bounce to 8. Recording on tracks 9-16 is just like recording on tracks 1-8. You just have to click the button that says 9-16 and then you'll be working on those tracks. Hope that helps.

    Love your videos, Steve! Very easy to understand. I have a question...I was getting a good clear sax sound in my recordings but after moving, I can't keep the sax from sounding like I'm playing in a metal barrel. Is there a setting in the Zoom that can help or could it be the mic? I'm using a condenser mic. Thanks!

    • @stevekonbass
      @stevekonbass  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Stacy- I always enjoyed playing with a good sax player. Well, if you had a good recorded sax sound before, there's no reason you shouldn't be able to get it now. Now, you mentioned you "moved". If you're in a new house, it could be the room acoustics of the new room you're recording in causing the problem. You'll have to try a bunch of things to get it right. Try positioning yourself in a dead area of the room. Try using your condenser mic which would need phantom power on track 5 with the phantom power on. Make sure your levels aren't hot and don't use any of the Zoom mic presets. Adjust the EQ on the track and trim down some of the Hi. If that doesn't work, then try some of the Zoom mic presets and see if any of those help. If all of that fails, then try switching out the mic with maybe a Shure 57, which isn't a condenser. Hope that helps.

    • @StacyHartChristianMusic
      @StacyHartChristianMusic 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stevekonbass Thanks, Steve! Yes, I moved. The odd thing was that the previous house was all logs and wood with cathedral ceilings. Great for playing live. When I recorded sax there, the sound of the sax actually came out great with the condenser mic. I have a Shure 57 and will try that here. And thanks for steering me straight on the Zoom. I was thinking maybe something had to be set to make the sax sound better. Anyway, if 'you're interested in how it sounded int the log house, take a listen to one of my songs. And thank you so much!!

      Hey Andy-
      Being that you recorded 3 hours onto 1 project, you have a little work cut out for yourself if you want each song to be a separate track. You could mix/master the whole 3 hour rehearsal and then move the mastered track to a program like Audacity and chop it up into individual tracks. That's probably the easiest way to go about it.

    Hi. I'm looking for a mixer to use in live jams, but also want it to have audio interface capabilities. Mainly for electronic music, i.e. with synths, drum machines, etc. I was initially looking at behringer qx1002usb, but then saw zoom r16. I realize they are quite different and the behringer doesn't have multitrack recording, but is there actually anything the zoom can't do that the behringer can? Can it just be used as a live mixer? Do inputs on r16 work in stereo mode or would I need to use two inputs per instrument in that case? Can the effects be applied in live mode or only when working with a recorded track? Thanks!

    • @stevekonbass
      @stevekonbass  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've used the R16 as a mixer for some solo gigs, but it's really not meant for that being it's made of plastic and not road worthy. There are 8 inputs that can be used and stereo outputs. You can EQ each track and you can have reverb and chorus on each track. They can be used live. There aren't stereo inputs so if you wanted to go stereo you'd use 2 inputs (ex. track 1 and 2) and pan them left and right. The other effects like the amp modeling can only be assigned to one track at a time so for example, you wouldn't be able to use the Hartke bass amp on track 1, the Fender twin on track 2, and a Marshall on track 3, at the same time. You could however put a mastering effect across all of the tracks.

      Sure. When you master it on the Zoom it's saved on the SD card as a WAV file. So it's just a matter of moving that file to your computer and importing it to Audacity. I actually do that same thing, pull the mastered song to Audacity if it needs additional tweaking.

Have you experienced this? How can I avoid?

    • @altillery7733
      @altillery7733 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @stevekonbass
      @stevekonbass  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Al. What you'll have to do is take each song and put it into a program like Audacity and trim the beginnings. To explain what's going on I'll give you an example... So you have 1 project and you record 3 songs from your rehearsal... First song starts at 1 second and ends at 3 minutes and you mix down and there's no issue. Now the next song starts at 3 minutes and goes to 6 minutes but when you mix down you have 3 minutes of dead air in the beginning. Next song starts at 6 minutes and goes to 9 minutes and when you mix down now there 6 minutes of dead air in the beginning. That's all because when you mix down the machine is always reading it from zero and considers that dead air part of the song. So, you can record each song as a new project, or depending on how many tracks you use for each take just start from zero. So for instance, if you're only using 4 tracks for eack song you can use tracks 1-4 for song #1, and then rewind the track, mute tracks 1-4, and put the next song on tracks 5-8, and so on. Then when you mix down each song will start at zero.
