The black cable is grown - negative. The red cable is power + or positive.

I connected them to the door handle light.

Can you just run the wires together? Instead of burning them together or however it's called

It's better to run the wires into to car n connect them to the interior lights. I just did it like this to safe some time n work.

Do the lights turn off when the door is closed? Or do they just keep running
