He was going on the fastest part of the hillclimb, and lost control. He Violently hit a rock and was thrown off the track. In one of the last photos taken of him (8:16 pause it to see), he could be seen throwing his hands up as he’s about to roll down the mountain, signaling that he’s okay. But the further he rolled down the hill, the more violent it got. In the last photo ever taken of the crash (8:21 pause again) he can be seen struggling to hold onto the car, eventually getting hit on the head by rock, killing him instantly.
