    I am located in the Peruvian Andes, so I really do not start things inside (I mean, I could) for it takes so much time. I usually start seedlings of broccoli in a flat plastic tote with a glass on top... other seedlings go in rows outside and once big enough are transplanted or fed to the chickens. That apart, I have good soil and make my own humus and compost, but THE BEST fertilizer I have made is my stinky brew of weeds, comfrey, borage, dandelion, nettle, etc. Boy, it stink,s but it is a miracle growth fertilizer. For the first time in years all my zucchinis are healthy, no mildew, even the yellow ones. The blueberries are doing great, as well as peppers, and beans. And we go from 26 Celsius during the day to 8 Celsius at night now in Autumn. The seedlings love my brew...and I try to pour it late in the afternoon when no one can yell at me for the smell...to me, it smells of success!

    Jeff I used the Alaska fish fertilizer, I only used one table spoon per gallon just to be safe. The tomatoes and peppers grew 2" in two days crazy. Thx Jeff

      I’ve used the same ratio for a couple years, and it’s crazy how well it works. I thought no way a tablespoon/gallon will do anything. I was very wrong. 😆 I also love that the company has never jumped on the opportunity to price gauge, which they very well could. The price has slowly and subtly increased, which makes me even more loyal to them. It’s also very accessible.

    Love the garden quickies // I was wondering when to feed my seedlings. My seedlings are started in the house under fluorescent lights. Anytime I want to slow their growth down all I have to do is "harden them off" a bit and that gives me a couple weeks of not growing.

    Question: what do you do Naturally to get rid of tiny black nats on herbs and small growing vegetables in the home under a light? They destroy my plants, even if I get them down to one nat.

    • @TheRipeTomatoFarms
      @TheRipeTomatoFarms  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fungus gnats.... The worst. It's not the flying adults that do the damage.. It's the larvae in the top layer of the soil. You cab spray with peroxide, use yellow sticky traps or even cover with a dusting of sand.

    When I first started, I never fertilized because I was scared to kill everything. 😆Kind of glad I didn’t, because I was able to see the difference it makes. Eagerly waiting on true leaves of several starts, not only to fertilize, but because I had a tag fail, and have no clue what they are. 🤣 They’re mostly brassicas, so their cotyledon look almost identical. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤣

    Hi Jeff, great info on the feeding young plants. But I have a question? I bought a couple of rosemary plants about 3 weeks ago, they’re still in a 4” pots and around 6” to 8” tall. I’m going to up pot them in a few days, but just wondering how big should they be before I can start propagating them make them bush out?

    • @TheRipeTomatoFarms
      @TheRipeTomatoFarms  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question... As a role, I try not to take more than 10-20% of the plant for cuttings. So if they have more than 5 or 6 big shoots, you should be ok to take 1+ cuttings...

    Jeff thank you so much for “feeding” my garden hobby!
    Quick question- I’ve been using the water from my fish tank to bottom water my seedlings; is this akin to fish fertilizer as I assumed bc the npk per my water tests is low? And/or, should I switch to a more concentrated fertilizer as you suggested??

    • @kittiew260
      @kittiew260 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @rm709 I use my fish tank water as well. Both hobbies fish keeping and gardening very addictive lol. I do have live plants and add fertilizer CO2 to my tank. The only problem is I find it's very low by time water change because my aquarium plants use it all up. So I do add a teaspoon of Neptune harvest all purpose when watering to get extra food in there. If not enough your plants will let you know.

    Instead of using the seedling food list you've mention.
    Would it works if I boil the several banana peels, let it cool off than use this as the food would that works as well?

    • @TheRipeTomatoFarms
      @TheRipeTomatoFarms  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's not bad, and it would certainly do no harm... But it would likely not have everything nor enough of what the plants need to grow their best...

    I see you have California Wonder Peppers. I started two packages of the them last year and none germinated...not a big deal because I winter sowed them in milk jugs and it was just an experiment. But, I can't buy any bell pepper plants, hybrid or heirloom, and get any size or harvest out of them. I can, however, plant Giant Marconi Peppers or any long type like that and end up with a very sizable pepper and harvest. Why would that be? They are in the same raised bed, same dirt and nutrients, same amount of sun, etc. I don't understand. The plants are bought at the same greenhouse. It was the same year after year, so I don't plant any bell type anymore. So I just stick to the elongated type of pepper. Any ideas? Just curious.
