Mini Router with Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4, Dual Gigabit Ethernet, 4GB RAM/32GB eMMC
5 years ago I reflashed an old linksys router with OpenWRT because the stock Cisco firmware didnt allow for wifi repeater; and it still works perfectly fine
I've done this on a Pi 3 with a single ethernet port using VLAN's. LAN was ID 1 and WAN was ID 20. Two ethernet ports is always the best. Now I have 8 on my UDM Pro.
Seeed Studio also has the Mini PC pizza that runs of the comput 4. Its simular to this but smaller and I think its more versatile with 2 ethernet ports and 2 HDMI ports. I have been hoping to see you do a video on it but this is close enough and reminds me that watching your videos always keeps me up-to-date. Thx
It looks like they added some sort of PCB glue/adhesive around the main chips... I wonder if they've experienced any issues with shipment causing chip problems? That's the first time I've seen that black adhesive used on a CM4.
It’s a neat job. As it’s my first one I assume it was how they all shipped.
Called underfill, adds robustness.
@@leepspvideo interested in seeing how that image +kit performs for the price against marc's
'CHEAP WI-FI MESH ALTERNATIVE' , 'Which Router is best for OpenWrt in 2021?' , and a pi4 compiled 'Faster Internet with OPENMPTCPROUTER' kernel jeff?

I'm curious if they fixed the network throughput issues since the one you tested on your channel, Jeff.
@@GnatTheGnome Supposedly there was an update, but when I went to check what they mentioned it didn't *seem* to be a networking-related patch. But I haven't had time to re-run my tests yet.
Seeed really makes awesome carrier boards for the CM4. I dig it.
You can also build your own similar router with a Raspberry Pi 4B by adding a USB Ethernet cable to give you 2 network ports. Download a copy of OpenWrt image for the RPi flash it to a microSD card and boot up to the same Luci interface.
Did this :)
Rp4 4gb RAM
With usb nic
Wan And lan
Lan to a managed Switch
Added tplink eap245 as Accesspoint
Works without issues
1gbit in Network and full isp Bandwith (250down 45 up)
Some routings and firewall rudes addet Too
No issues pi Handles Fine
Por ese precio puedes comprar un router de verdad bastante bueno compatible con OpenWRT o un Mikrotik. Orange Pi r1
Oohhh, interesting. I've been using OpenWRT on and off since it's early days. This looks to be a rather nice unit.
Openwrt is awesome
Looks nice, but for a router I would opt for a mikrotik hap ac2 or so. It also runs openwrt and has also switching capability. But if you want to use it as a pi its great
good enough i guess. but I wish that they actually put a 2.5Gig NIC on it that is connected to a 5 port VLAN aware switch.
Great vid. Openwrt looks powerful. How do I backup the installed Openwrt image before I overwrite it? Same imager tool?
You could try one of these methods treating the CM4 like a usb drive

nice, power usage must be a big deal, wonder how this works compared to pfsense?
At about 5:00 you indicate that, lacking power, the device enables "pass-through." This is supposed to be a security device. In the event of a failure (power, crash, whatever), all the devices downstream of the router would be silently vulnerable: that seems a poor design choice ...
I have used DD.WRT many years ago with adsl2 connection and got a faster but unstable connection, it was faster that's all i wanted
If you have to keep it jumped to run with a different os, looks like a jumper from a PC motherboard would work.
It was only connected while flashing the eMMC. Raspberry pi os ran fine without the cable.
Technically this is as powerful as a dream machine since this has the same processor and has 4gb ram compared to 2gb
Nice. Ordered one.
I'd like to see opnsense or pfsense one day in it... Pfsense has been on arm, but i don't think there is any pi support. (Edited the names of the products)
Yes pfsence doesn't support Raspberry Pi but I think I will support in the future
Pfsence is awesome
This was the first thing that I thought when I saw this device. It would love to see a review on that and hear about the performance if it were at all possible.
Would this be suitable to act as a standalone firewall? If only it could run something like pfsense hehe
Thanks for sharing !
a bit expensive, but a router that takes openwrt is often this expensive but has the advantage of having 4 ethernet ports, here you just get 1 so you need a good switch
Hi all, Im using ver 21.02. I have issue with "unsaved changes" in GUI. Once I do some changes, press save, press unsaved changes, nothing will happen. Anyone got any idea?
does this device have a practical use, or is it just considered a toy?
Please make a video about openwrt + raspberry pi 4
Already guides on TH-cam. Looks like you need a usb Ethernet Adaptor.
Can you do this with a add on ethernet adaptor instead for the PI4?
Yes, videos on TH-cam
I know a person that got that router with that board and it ended up loading a script for bitcoin mining.
He only discovered this when he was entering a script for a scheduled task, which the board removed and reapplied the malware.
The script was specifically written for OpenWrt and the default wan->lan firewall settings on the device were ACCEPT,ACCEPT,ACCEPT on an outdated SEEED fork for OpenWrt.
Were it not for Jeff Girling's video on the board and a custom driver someone on Github wrote for Jeff for the board's controller chip there was no way to flash new, up to date, OpenWrt.
The whole this was sketchy. By default the OpenWrt's firewall setting for wan->lan is reject, accept, reject.
I do not trust this board nor Seeed.
How long have you been waiting for the CM4.
I’m more focused on Pi 4. Although the handheld side of the CM4 is very appealing.
Many amazing CM4 inventions by the week/month, shame theres pretty much no CM4's in the wild atm, their like rocking horse sh*t atm.
Btw, if im seeing this right, this "Router" isnt actually what most would consider a "Home Router" is it? cant plug your dsl/fiber into it liek your normal router? if so id say these mini routers are more like an overpowered switch with less ethernet ports. Given the options available to the device, you are probably better off just using a NAS to do everything this mini router does, plus this seems like a fairly chunky price for a speedy feature packed switch.
It will pass?through? How that… a switch chip or does it connect with some solid state relays? And can it be turned off for firewalls?
Try asking on the Seeed link.
Can I use this with the Pi to act as an interpreter between 2 machines? I need to send and receive TCP messages from a machine and then translate them (different syntax) before forwarding it to the second machine.
It’s not something I have tried
hate the default rpi desktop background, irritating sunlight, but nice hardware
from all the complaints i heard about rpi, yours is the most irrelevant easy to ignore by devs
No OLED display for e.g. QRCODE.
I DONT Know but i got a Feeling that this IS really good. So Blessings FROM Germany this Channel get a SUB cause i learn INSTEAD of Just"dumbwatch"
Do you have a link to the Power Adapter that you used here, please?
I haven’t used the 4A 5V one that came with the router. I was using the official Raspberry Pi adapter linked in a lot of my video descriptions. The video shows the 4A adapters model.
Isn't this the board that uses USB3 for the 2nd NIC?
It uses the PCIe
This carrier board features 2 x Gigabit Ethernet Ports (RJ45). One Ethernet Port is connected to the Gigabit Ethernet PHY of the CM4 module which is based on Broadcom BCM54210PE. On the the hand, the other Gigabit Ethernet Port is connected to Microchip's LAN7800 which is a USB 3.0 to GbE (Gigabit Ethernet Bridge). The USB 3.0 interface here is extended from the PCIe interface of the CM4 Module. Also, both ports can support speeds up to 1Gbps.
@@leepspvideo not really. Watch Jeff Geerling's video in which he compares this board with one from dfrobot. There you can see that the Seeed solution is throttling the 2nd NIC by not attaching it directly to the PCIe bus.
Great video

Orange Pi r1
$149???
why not dual 2.5G?
Got one, however as soon as I tried to use it I found out the whole file system that it is flashed with is read only. That means you can't update the password no matter what you do. That makes it totally useless. Bought it on Amazon so if Seed does not get back to me with a solution I will be sending it back for a refund. Great idea and it did connect up but with the entire file system set to read only can't make any configuration changes and that leaves it wide open for hacking and makes my whole network vulnerable. Anyone come across this issue with theirs?
You could try flashing the image

Does wi-fi work with this kit?
In trying to find out I found this.

When i reflashed it with the new build i found the wireless would work.
It's owl rowter, not root rooter. 😑 🤣😂🤣
Depends where you live
I'd also like to see these clustered with the VMware 7 fling, clustered redundant routers anyone?
Nope
@@pavan13 i think it would be could with redundant routes and piehole plus more and perhaps even fail over ... I need to buy a pi 4 or compute and see if I can mount iscsi storage under esxi (the fling is free) but i have vsphere through the VMUG
