    Thanks for the vid. Thinking about getting a Smith reproduction, why I watched. I have several Colt & Remingtons. It was stated earlier by others but the ONLY reason 45 colt was never chambered was because it was impossible with the nearly nonexistent rims on the original cases. It was also the only popular pistol caliber not chambered in the Winchester 73, 32-20,38-40, etc. As the rim was way to small. They later beefed them up. They are still thin if u compare to most revolver rounds like 38 Smith, Colt, 38 Special, The 44 Russian, 45 Schofield, etc. I love 45 Colt but it's still a problem even today with some guns, double actions and levers. Back when cartridges were new they didn't think an extractor groove and rim would matter.

    I have a 5 inch Schofield in 45 colt that I shoot 45 cowboy special and 45 Schofield black powder out of. I’ve been on Cimarron‘s waiting list for an American 8 inch in 44 special for a long time now. I’m wanting to shoot 44 Russian black powder out of it to be a little more historically accurate. Neat guns.
    Like you said these reproductions don’t run as well with black powder like originals because of the longer cylinders and frames and they’re not being a gas ring. I noticed in shooting using shorter brass with less powder it allows you to get more rounds out of it. I can get about 30 rounds using 45 Schofield brass vs barely a whole cylinder when using 45 colt brass. Also since 45 Scofield has a much bigger rim than 45 colt it more reliably eject and I’ve never had to worry about a piece of brass getting stuck under the star ejector like 45 colt. I haven’t tested how many I can shoot until it fouls out and locks up with 45 cowboy special and black powder yet.

    • @triplefshooting
      @triplefshooting  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's excellent information! Interesting that the shorter cartridge makes that much of a difference in fouling. I have yet to dive into the BP cartridges. I know I would probably love the experience but I'm terrified to miss something when cleaning and rust a gun. Had a bad experience with a cap and ball rusting when I was first starting to shoot them.
      Good luck on the waiting list. Hope it come soon, I would love to hear how it handles.

      @@triplefshooting yeah lots more nooks and crannies to clean on the schofield after black powder shooting. Q tips helps get in all the small things places and I pull it out of the safe every day for a week or 2 after shooting and look it over to see if any white corrosion is starting in a corner I missed. Colt cap and ball guns and saa clones are way easier to clean throughly with confidence. I only reload black powder. I will modern smokelss eventually. I want to shoot smokeless in my real colts not black powder, and I’d like to learn 45acp, 30-06 and .308. Just afraid I’ll blow something up because it’s way more sensitive than blackpowder. Blackpowder just make sure there’s no air gap between the powder and bullet. Use as much or little powder you want. You can use wads and fillers to take up the space. I have to see if my schofield clip is still up. I had tons of videos edited similar to yours especially about cleaning and reloading blackpowder guns. But youtube came after me and deleted most of them and gave me strikes. I was just at 15,000 subs. Now they’re going after duelist1954 for the same stuff. I unfortunately didn’t back up my videos so most are gone. If my schofield quick clip isn’t still up I’ll upload it real quick with blackpowder and hopefully it doesn’t get deleted. Why are they putting in five bullets instead of six

    • @triplefshooting
      @triplefshooting  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The revolvers at the time had no internal safeties to keep the hammer from resting on a live primer. If fully loaded with the hammer down, a dropped gun was fairly likely to go off.
      For cowboy action shooting, it is a rule to keep people safe for the same reasoning.
      If you're going to shoot all six immediately after loading, it's no big deal to load all the chambers. But for carrying the revolver, five rounds and hammer down on an empty chamber is the way to go.

    • @edindemic5620

    Was it possible to ream the chambers of the Schofield to accept 45LC ammo? Was the cylinder long enough? Could the S&W handle the pressures? What were the ballistics of each? Thank you.

    • @triplefshooting
      @triplefshooting  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Reaming wouldn't be necessary as both guns are 45 caliber. 45 colt couldn't be loaded in an original due to overall cylinder length. It could sort of be compared to 357 magnum not fitting in a 38 special gun. Same caliber, different length. I would imagine that the schofield would have handled the pressures of 45 colt for a time as they were not terribly different. Modern loadings of 45 colt can get pretty crazy, but a black powder loading of each is probably around a 1000-2000 psi difference. That's just a guess though.

    • @triplefshooting
