    I've got a beer joke for you: A German, a Czech and an Austrian go to a bar. The bartender asks what they would like to drink. The German orders a Beck's, the Czech orders a Budweiser and the Austrian orders apple juice. The German and the Czech ask: "Why did you order apple juice?" The Austrian answers: "If you guys don't drink beer, I won't either" xD

      Markus: Depends... If I have to choose between Czech beer and some 'Brauunion' brand I don't have to think for one second. But throw in a Hirter or Weitra... hmm... that's when it becomes a tough decision. (Especially because beer from southern Austria is a quite different style, so we're comparing apples and oranges here.)

      Ah, right. Forgot that ^^. No, that's absolutely not true. It might appear that way to strangers, but I perceive it more as like siblings mock each other in public, but secretely love each other and will bond immediately if a third party threatens one of them.

      Eis Geflüster Third party? Let's say refugees are the third party. Austrian patriots and German patriots are bond to eachother? I am very sad to see modern-day Germany. It's like Sodom and Gomorrah. I am very sad because my ancestors are German. They came from Germany to Texas.

    Dude, you can't say austrian beer is worse than german beer! Are you crazy? They will spit in your food and shit in your pants if they hear that. Also austria has a higher variety and a very, very long beer tradition. Some of the oldest breweries there are are in austria. So everyone, please respect that. Also austrian will tell you, the only reason americans choose german beer over austrian is because their beer sucks balls and austrian beer has "too much taste". Which is kinda true.

    Don't agree. Austrians are soooo nice. I am from Germany and have been to this great country so many times (not just as a tourist :D). They are always nice and friendly, helpful, uncomplicated, they are more open and natural than the standard German and their country is just damn beautiful. Only the people from Vienna are regarded as grumpy (common prejudice in Austria) even if I never had any issues with them. Austrians, thank you for being the way you are!

      The grumpiness is part of the Viennese way of life.
      It's a very special kind of attitude though, not necessarily rude or disrespectful on a personal level but more a general wailing about the iniquity of life and the world and everything. Hard to describe to a foreigner. I've been living in Vienna for nearly 15 years now - originally from Styria - and I'm still amazed sometimes about the unique Viennese way of collective grumpy whining (it can be very connecting, though).

    Being an Austrian for nearly 40 years, living both in the countryside and Vienna, I like to adress some comments about your shocking facts.
    Like in every country on this planet, there are different parts and different people all around the country. The more you head to Western Austria, the more you will experience some sort of rural tradition and life. Nearly no Austrian is aware of "The Sound of music" and it has no impact on Austrian culture, this is soley important for tourists, especially from the US, and therefore for the tourist business.
    The spots you normally visit as tourist in the Western part make a good revenue due to tourist attractions. Presenting it as being rural, traditional is what tourists expect and want. But thats not the way a common Austrian lives, especially not from the East.
    People like to live in traditions, wearing their "Trachten" mostly on special occasions, during working days most Austrians dress and live a lifestyle like any other European.
    Thats what brings me to your interpretation, that Austria is very nationalistic. I say Austria is far more less nationalistic than many other countries in Europe, theres a huge difference in living a tradition on special occasions than feeling as being a strong, superior nation. And I even think there is a stronger bond to local traditions, sometimes only seperated by some kilometers, than one naionwide identity.
    You are perfectly right that the service is hell here both in restaurants, cafes and shops. You will be shocked when coming from the US to Austria, but dont take that personally. One good fact about Austria worth mentioning is the fact, that the majority of Austrians speak English, so this might be a plus for ppl fearing a language barrier. They are maybe not pro active in approaching tourists like in the US, where you can expect someone willing to help when they watch you looking at the map. But just ask, they are quite friendly and willing to help, but it is up to you to take the first step.
    Nonetheless, visiting Vienna and Eastern Austria is a whole different view, different people and experience than the western parts of Austria, like it would be a difference in lifestyle and mindset between lets say Montana and the state of New York. But I can agree to most of your views.

    it's important for tourists to know that you do NOT have to tip that much. Especially if you're a tourist, just don't go to 5 star restaurants or something like that. Like if the bill is 38,29 € just pay 40 € and it's perfect. :)

      As a matter of fact, you don't have to tip at all. If I am not satisfied with the service I do not tip. Wondering where the rumor that you have to tip your waiters no matter what came from. It's true that waiters and waitresses expect to be tipped, but in my opinion it is something that has to be earned.

    It's at least a little bit funny to hear an American talking about national pride and gross beer ;)
    But seriously, as someone who has travelled and lived in other countries, I think you always get people talking about their countries A LOT. I lived in Australia, and boy do Australians love their country, you won't hear the end of it sometimes.
    I believe that Germans feel a bit more ingrained shame about the past century whereas Austria always looks back to its long lost monarchy as the golden days. I think it's less pride and more nostalgia. It's people wanting to remind others, that yes, Austria was once a big country with a lot of influence in the world. The fact that you find this shocking is reason enough for many to state it to tourists like that. It's hard for Austrians to hear that a lot of people either don't know the country or think it's a region in Germany, for instance. It is also a wide spread thing that Americans don't know anything about Austria, or that it even exists, so, quite frankly, an American might get a bit more info than someone from the UK, for instance.

      @JarvanTheV 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Alice InTheComments No not most people smoke. That would mean that there are more smokers than non-smokers and that's simply not true.
      In fact there are less and less smokers because awareness is rising and smoking is less socially accepted than in the past. Also the government tries to limit smoking.
      And it's also not true that all non-smokers are okay with people smoking around them which is pretty understandable since you start stinking of smoke.
      Additionally a passive smoker takes nearly as many pollutants as a smoker because when you drag on your cigarette it heatens up and most pollutants get burned but if the cigarette is just there glowing all the pollutants get into the air and everybody around the cigarette breaths them in.
      Smoking is simply stupid. You pay for pumping pollutants in your lungs and dying earlier.
      So no not everybody is okay with people smoking around them here in Austria. We are not a nation of smokers.

And why would this be on this list when American waiters expect you to tip at least 10$? (well at least my English teacher said so, she has already been many times in America)

    Hi Mark, thanks for providing us with an outside view. It is always interesting to see how one is percieved by others. Still there are some points that I feel the need to comment upon.
    Tipping: it is perfectly OK not to tip in Austria, as service fees are always included. That doesn't mean that you percieved the service as bad. But it is custom to round up to the next Euro and maybe give a few extra Euros. The 10% rule is when you are really satisfied with the service, and only on special occasions.
    Friendliness: yes, Austrians do hold back. It's a cultural thing. We believe in privacy, so do not expect to be approached for no reason, eg. idle chit-chat. On the other hand, most of us do love to help once we see that somebody needs help. Also, feelings are considered private, so you are seldom asked "Did you enjoy your stay" but rather "Was everything OK".
    Beer: sorry, that's nonsense. Austria has a very fine and growing beer culture with a lot of good brands and many superb micro-breweries. Our beer is up to par with our wine. Otherwise our beer consumption per capita wouldn't be higher than even the germans, ranking us third in the world... ;-)

      knife freak Nein.

    I disagree about the beer. the beer was excellent! I loved the Radler! On A hot Day it was better than drinking stupid coke! I would say the Austrians were redecent and very formal, but once you I frequented the stores and restaurants and made an effort to speak German, they were very warm and friendly. As for Culture, I left Austria with a love of traditional dirndl fashion. Though they were expensive, I came home and made my own dirndl. I met a lady from Austria at our local Aldi and she said the next time I go to Austria to buy a good Dirndl. I loved Salzburg and the one thing I was very shock by was the expense of everything. it is an expensive City. BUT I LOVED THE BEER!

    About #6.
    It's true that waiters in Austria don't come to you every two minutes. The waiter comes to your table when he thinks you're ready to order and most of the time, that's it. You might get asked if everything's alright if he walks by or if you're in a reeeaally fancy restaurant, but other than that you're left alone. Why? Because otherwise we'd get annoyed! xD We're at a restaurant to eat and neither to get asked if we're okay every few seconds nor to chit-chat. If you need something, just raise your hand. Waiters are not impolite, they just don't want to disturb you all the time!:)
    Also, tipping isn't a must-do. Of course it's a polite thing to do but it's more seen as a thank you if you've been happy with your service. It's not like in the US where you get a death stare if you don't tip^^". We also don't tip a specific amount of money, we usually just round up the bill (e.g. instead of 17,45€ you'd pay 20€).

      Hard to be 'friendly' if u are underpayed and over worked compared to the living costs. And i take good service over friendly service any day. Grumpy Kaffeehaus waiters in Vienna are just in line with their legacy :)

      @maryj.5664 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. I was for some days in Austria and for some days in Italy. U can't even compare these 2 countries. The Italian ppl are full of life and so nice the Austrian are like they don't know anything about friendliness.

    • @superdau
      @superdau 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      In many "touristy" restaurants or coffee houses the waiters aren't austrian, but are, depending on season, coming from all over Europe (majority would be from northern/eastern Germany). In most traditional family lead restaurants service is totally frinedly. (As an Austrian) I don't care much for the friendlyness of service anyway. I rather have people that are grumpy be grumpy than fake friendlyness (I really couldn't stand service in the US for example, because you can feel that half the time it's not honest)

    I'm from Austria and I really appreciate your video! It was nice to hear about the impressions we make... good and bad. I totally agree about the point regarding the friendlyness of waiters or service... would recommend not only visiting the "tourist spots" or known citys (sometimes the staff is just too busy in high season), you will be suprised what you find away from the known routes!

    You don't have to tip any amount of money if you are not happy with the service at all.
    Just saying.
    Vice versa I do love how servers treat you in America and we also should get more "friendly" in AUT.
    Like your content!
    Keep up your nice work.

    Three things I was shocked by: 1- how clean and pristine everything was. No trash, graffiti, and the cemeteries were immacculate, etc. 2- How honest and helpful everyone was. The young people were especially polite and helpful. They went the 2nd mile to help us. The honesty meant they trusted people to put money in to get a newspaper, flowers in a tulip field, subway tickets, etc. People left their dogs outside stores and knew they'd be there when they came back. 3- The last thing was how green the grass was - everywhere, like it had been painted. Gorgeous!

    Really nice video! :)
    As an Austrian I feel like it really depends on what part of the country you visit. For example, I live in Burgenland, the Eastern part of Austria, next to Hungary. You rarely see any Dirndls here (those traditional dresses), and we don't really have mountains or anything. I was in a school with students from everywhere in Austria - Vienna, Salzburg, Carinthia, and so on. It was really funny because sometimes we don't even use the same words or descriptions for the same things.
    However, service might not be this fake friendliness, but it's quite unusual for staff to be unprofessional! Also, there is no specific amount you have to tip, like I already read in the comment section, people tend to round up to the next Euro, at least when it's a small bill, like for coffee. Bigger tips like 10-20% are given when the bill is for a full meal, at least that's what I experience in daily life in Austria. Plus, you don't HAVE to!
    There might be some unfriendly people here and there, but most of us try to be helpful and nice. It helps to start a conversation with the right approach and a smile, then you've already won! ^-^
