Upper bolt need special length. I used 3/8"drive adapter to 1/4" socket was good length.
      Mine not very tight.

For those of you without a Vehicle lift try this. Put a jack under the oil pan and loosen the 4 bolts on the top motor mount. Slowly lower the jack. This will lower the engine and give you an extra 1 - 2 inches of space to access the top tensioner mounting bolt. Don't remove the bolts. Leave them threaded in 1/4 - 1/2 inch. The bolts are pretty long and can give you the extra room you need to complete the job quicker and easier.

3rd hole upper right.. Roll tensioner to let off tension on belt and put a pin, allen wrench whatever thru upper right hole and in engine block and it'll hold the tensioner to take belt off.

I would address the fact that the car is running in salted roads or is showing heavy surface rust on metal parts. These bolts should never be put in dry. I would always use no-lock on the bolts when putting older ones back in or with new hardware. Your videos are of great quality but the mystery of taking things apart and the frustration of stuck bolts can be mitigated with no-lock. Another point is to use thread locker. It may be slightly more difficult to back them out but they will not rust or corrode.

Changing the tensioner was much harder than I was led to believe. It took me forever to get the bolts out and back into the new one, working through that little hole in the wheel well, and one of the bolts broke so now I'm going to have to take it to the shop anyway. I might as well have brought it to the shop in the first place because it's not a very expensive job and it's a major PITA to do it yourself.

What ratchet type, extension and socket you guys used? I had a 3/8 craftsman wrench with a stubby and a small 13mm and I was able to lose the top nut but then I got stuck. I couldn't find any other combination to get it off. Any suggestions on a wrench or ratchet? I see that you used the ratchet with an angle, is that the only one you used?

I call B.S. on that top bolt!! Beware it's super hard to get a socket on there. The pulley for the water pump is in the way of getting a socket on there as well as a deep socket even with a ratchet that pivots. Also not enough clearance for a deep socket...it's a mofo! I had to use an extension with a swivel and barely got it loose and retightened!!! Had to use a wrench and get a small turn at a time till I could use my finger...it almost couldn't be done.

This is the most crap design for a car I’ve ever seen. It’s almost impossible to get to the tensioner when you’re doing it on the ground. Had to take a sawzall and cut some of the inner fender out. I have dealt with the tensioner on my car all year. It broke the bolts off and came off the first time. Put it back on then it done the same thing again. Put a new tensioner on it this time and now the bolts have backed out of the tensioner and threw the belt again. No idea why it’s doing this

  • @HailAnts

NOTE: This does NOT apply to a 2006 Altima, at least not the 3.5 V6 model, as they have a manual, worm-gear tensioner not a spring-loaded one.
Actually, after watching other videos, it seems sometimes the adjuster is automatic and sometimes it's manual, on various years and both I4 and the V6..
