I almost wanna tell you to also take it easy on the small animations and transitions. Not because they're annoying, quite the opposite, but just so you don't overdo the workload on yourself, lol. But seriously, all the little visual aids, when explaining things such as the style of lines, coloring method or eye-shapes, they fantasticly did their jobs on keeping the eyes and ears in sync, to keep the attention and making everything clear and understandable straight away at a perfect to follow tempo. And struck a great ballance of not talking TOO technicall, so both experienced and beginner artists can understand everything that's being explained. Great example for presenting any kind of instruction or tutorial video, the way you put this one together.
This is a good video and tutorial but bro please you dont need to add the *woosh* sound effect EVERY time something moves. Its like listening to Johnny Test with the whip crack sound effect. Its driving me crazy
Honestly! It pisses me off like nothing else. It’s literally just jingling keys to keep your attention like you didn’t pick this video because you wanted to actually watch it.
Nice vid. The modern style is a bit off to be honest, as someone that has deeply studied it in order to replicate it, I can tell that some concepts are nicely explained but not necessarily on spot with the actual design choices the official artist made. You're missing textures, secondary highlights and material highlights, like, the light reflects differently depending on the Pokémon or character fur/skin/clothes. Also there are secondary shadows and border highlights as well running next to the main lineart... in general a good approach, very simplified which is nice as an introduction to the style. Great job!
I did notice that the highlights for the fur/feathers didn't have that trademark super-thick brushstroke appearance. I found this to be a very good introduction piece, though. There are many technicalities for different styles that are really only learned through one's own research and practice, though. It's one of those things where you can explain it to beginners, but if they try to focus on those things right off the bat instead of on the basics, then it comes out very unbalanced (such as someone hyper-focusing on a highlight and then over-doing that one piece while the rest is just a vague representation of something). I don't believe this was meant to be a super in-depth rhetoric, despite the tone, though.
@@ElysetheEevee yeah, I really went into the video thinking I would learn something new or that I might be doing wrong or something, but in fact I left it feeling relieved that my studies have proven that I have a better understanding of the official style than what I initially credited myself for.
This is the BEST art analysis video I've ever seen. You nailed the 3 most iconic Pokémon styles and also give us tips to do it our owns. Truly amazing!! Keep the good work. Maybe the next time could be Zelda's art style? ❤️🙌🏻
Love this type of video you do and the way you do it man! Learned a lot from it and very entertaining to watch. I had a great time watching both of your videos so far. If I may suggest some other art styles for you to cover I’d say the classic 2000 Cartoon Network artstyle, the Zelda franchise and dbz. I would love to see you break them down for me the way you did it here. Keep up the good work 🎉
Hi, I’m an artist that HATES drawing tutorials but loves to experiment in many art styles. I got recommended this and it’s EXACTLY what I need. I can handle body types and have a rough idea of facial features, it was just specifically the art style itself and showing which brushes work, which don’t, etc., and not that many people focus on specifically, it’s always bothered me. So I thank you so much for this, I while I mainly was focusing on the modern, learning, the other styles is a nice addition
The trainer growing older and the Pokemon upgrading with every style is such a creative idea! I would really love to see a Sonic video next, covering the classic style like in Sonic 1, 2 and 3, the adventure style made by Yuji Uekawa in Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, and the Riders style used in the animations for Sonic Riders.
Great video! I have a few tips for the modern style that I'm gonna drop here because there's a few different techniques that can actually help making it more convincing: - If you don't have your brush setting set up like this already, taper the lines, this helps with areas like the nose, gaps between fingers, corners of eyelids, etc etc - When shading, Ken Sugimori actually uses a dark blue on a clipping mask layer on a low opacity. It's noticeable a lot more in some of his more recent works. There's actually a video of Sugimori drawing new art of Pulseman in real time on TH-cam, it's also fully subtitled too - There's many ways of doing the contour stroke. You can either do the shading on another layer with 100% opacity and then erase with a much lower opacity to get the effect, or build up on the shading to get a similar effect - The contour stroke itself doesn't have to be clean, it often fluctuates slightly in official art - In some artworks, contour strokes for highlights are actually somewhat hexagonal, this is noticeable in the official art for the modern official art for Hoppip and Conkeldurr, as examples - Outlines are typically black or very dark blue, with a few exceptions, Pokémon with 'gelatinous' or 'non solid' bodies, like Solosis, Palossand and Alcremie have coloured outlines. On that same note, all Gigantamax Pokémon have a pinkish-red outline, and all future Paradox Pokémon also use a similar technique with their glowing sections
One thing to keep in mind for the humans is that other artists are brought on to illustrate the key art for characters, e.g. Yusuke Ohmura for Gens 5, 6 and a few from SwSh; and the illustrator Take for the Aether Foundation, Galar Gym Leaders, PLA's Adaman & Irida, and SV's Perrin. So you can change up your style a bit from time to time if you want to! But the coloring should still remain somewhat consistent ig
even as someone who may not draw in this particular style often, the conciseness yet plethora of information is really cool. so many little things i dont normally think about in terms of art thats making me understand it more. i highly encourage you to keep making more videos like these and am excited to see how far your teachings can go!
Wow! This analysis through the whole series art styles is simply brilliant! Hope to see a video or videos of zelda artysles since there are pelnty of games with a new artstyle in almost every new big game.
You really got me taking notes out here man, I really appreciate you sharing how you did that old school effect. The Last Airbender/My Adventures with Superman's style would be pretty cool for a future vid 🔥
When seeing the reference official art it definitely shows how the artstyle evolution didn't happen overnight. The gen 3 art still kept some of the watercolor shading and eye shape to an extent, and the modern style was eventually refined between gens 4 and 5. Meanwhile the anime style remained true to the original until gen 4, then tweaked / modernized aspects of it during gens 5 and 6, had that drastic detour in gen 7 and finally settled with a close take of the modern game artstyle in gen 8. And funny how the new retro art scans came just as the video was in production. It added an extra layer of information and left it more up to date. Not sure what can I request for a future video, but since you mentioned how most retro anime artstyles are similar color and linework wise yet differentiate one another via shapes / character designs, I think seeing more classic anime artstyles covered in this series (like that little example of Sailor Moon that was shown) should be interesting. Nicely done!
This was a really good breakdown, but you might've gone a bit overboard with the sound effects. At times it was hard to pay attention to what you were saying because there were 3-5 sound effects per sentence. If I could make a suggestion, I'd like to see one on the Puyo Puyo franchise, but specifically the sprite art from the Compile games and the key art from the Fever games. Most people try to learn the artstyle from the modern games, but it's just...so boring. The other two styles aren't practiced nearly as much so I'd love to see you break them down.
Again, this is such a cool series! Really great presentation too, you've clearly put a lot of effort into making it flashy and streamlined. But this one felt a bit too fast-paced for me and I found myself wishing I had more time to stop and take in what you were saying. Obviously I could pause to do that, but just offering feedback. Overall another wonderful video, thanks so much!
I've wanted to draw in the Pokemon artstyle ever since I was little, and this tutorial can finally make that dream come true! Absolutely amazing info here, loved it!
I usually hate tutorial videos because they are usually long and "drawn" out, but the way you did this video is masterful. the way you present the information is the way I usually think as I draw. I typically learn different styles by studying and reverse engineering the art and everything you said in this video is what I've learned by studying Ken Sugimori's art.
I’m personally not a fan of Pokémon, but I love the old school anime filtered look the most, it’s kinda cozy in a way. Also, I’ve requested this before, but I think it’d be cool if you tried drawing Sonic Battle’s art style.
Really enjoyed your video! Super informative and well made! I think you could pull back on the sound effects a bit though, they were a distracting, to me atleast.
This was really good! The only anime styles I can replicate decently is PASWG and maybe the Sonic OVA, probably cause it takes on more of a western inspired style. If you could go over how to do Ren and Stimpy or The Thief and the Cobbler's styles, that'd be neat, as I'm trying to replicate those accurately right now, but it isn't always consistently good imo.
I often wonder how much further I would've progressed with art if I'd had such concise tools as this video, and I didn't have to take so much time self-teaching. Most of this stuff I figured out on my own or by natural intuition when I was young. Some of it was formally taught (I can't tell you how many "Drawing/Art 101" classes I've taken over the last 30 years). Very good, well-rounded introduction to different Pokemon-style media. It's a difficult style to capture despite its simplicity. It's rare to see fans that can perfectly encompass the "vibe" of Pokemon art, especially the old variation. This was fun to watch. I'm a new sub with this video, and I'm curious to watch more of what you have!
I'm holding out for any of the Sonic art styles- although with how many comics artists the franchise has had, it'd be easier to separate Sonic into a Games Styles video (any of the many games styles) and a Comic Styles (comparing StC to Archie to IDW) video.
I am a sucker for art style videos so i absolutely had a blast watching this! You should do Sonic Art styles next, that would be cool, maybe even Zelda Styles. No pressure tho XD
I have been drawing in the Pokémon style for a few years now, even doing it for a living, and i must say, im surprised by how good this video is. It goes into great detail for all the styles that pokemon goes and even differentiate between trainer art and pokemon. All explained in only 12 minutes. And the video editing is also very good and entretaining. You earned a sub, can't wait to see what else you have in stock.
Great video! Something that will surely help me actually finishing a -tober list of Fakemons this month! Now that I see your breakdown, my style so far is the anime artstyle, with what you presented, I’ll try incorporating some of the missing elements I didn’t use for the newer pieces! Again, awesome video! 🤟
Incredible stuff! I’ve been drawing some fakemon, but it’d be cool to try and emulate some of the older styles! The tip with the textured brushes is great too. I always use a smooth brush, I’ll see if textured brushes help my lineart
Holy crap! Here’s my annual TH-cam comment: This was amazing! I love how you broke down the elements of the different art eras and explained how to easily replicate them using easy to follow and understand language. As a former high school art teacher, your ability to share difficult to share information is impressive. I’d suggest thinking about a career in teaching, but oh my god don’t do it :)
I like your choice of having the character and Pokemon grow and evolve with the art style. Cute and fun to see ^^ Seriously though,, this is such an in depth well thought out art observation and I'm absolutely using the animation style if I decide to do fake screenshot for fun XD
I read your comment about "toning it down on the SFX" but I personally feel like this style is just right. It felt engaging and kept me intrigued the whole way through. It made those 12 minutes go by quick. The amount of effort into this video also shows because of that, and that my friend is something not everyone has. Great video and breakdown! Really loved the breakdown of the first two styles since they hit home for me and give me that dose of nostalgia.
such an underrated channel, it's accurate for artists and informative for non-artists. I love how much work goes into the graphics, this is the channel that I wish existed ages ago when I began drawing. Thank you for all your hard work.
I just naturally do that thing with the first art style where you round the corners of tangents and stuff when drawing my own Fakemon, I've been doing it for the same reason so I'm glad others do it too
This was a lot of fun as well, I definitely think the CRT details could come in handy for some art. Also, if you wanna do more cartoon artstyles, maybe the artstyles of Friz Frieling, Chuck Jones and Tex Avery? 3 of the core directors of Looney Tunes' classic shorts
Love how detailed you get into very tiny and small details that really help bring these artsytles together. Definitely gonna be trying to replicate the watercolor and anime styles at some point. EDIT: I had an additional paragraph about the loud SFX being distracting, but then I scrolled down a few comments and noticed that you had already addressed that, so I've removed it
The Ken Sugimori and Kouki Saitou art styles are the best in Pokémon that people can recognize. The SV art style makes the characters look like they are from a different series.
This is what a lot of animation twitter misses the details out on. If they have the same art style, it actually means the same universal techniques used across all shows when animation cels are involved. Otherwise, it's just the in-house style that's being applied (think Pokemon and Transformers, same techniques being applied, radically different art styles for humans). With "Modern", there's just three key rules. A textured pen brush, two tone shading, and heavy stylization. Take, Ariga Megamix, and Sugimori's designs have unique personal flair to them that help them stand out, as examplified with Project Voltage, the Vocaloid and Pokemon collaboration project of 8 artists from within TPCi studios.

Omg! This video came in just in time! This is so awesome!! I’m gonna use this! Maybe as a suggestion, how about Zelda or starfox, maybe even sonic or Soulcalibur. But you are awesome! Keep up the great work! You earned a sub! 🎉
The colored outlines on the anime style are technically correct. But they never actually appeared in the show. As the animation cels age, the paint will eventually absorb with the black ink, making a darker color.
This is exactly the type of channel I was looking for, hope to see more soon. Any plans to take on the various art styles used in Fire Emblem? (Kozaki, Hidari)
Your videos are amazing man, it totally worth the wait Also i have a suggestion if you want to do it at least ¿Would you do a tutorial of the DDLC art style?
I alreadt know the next art style is decided, but i really would love to see the Persona 3, 4 and 5 art style, or the Sonic Classic, Riders/battle and Adventure
You're an art genius!! I love this video, and the OCs you creates ended up looking like real characters that could've existed in the Pokémon universe. TH-cam needs more amazing videos like this one! Bravo!
One thing I like about your video is that in your celshading segment, you actually demonstrated how you'd turn softshading into hardshading. The biggest hurdle for me learning to celshade was that I didn't know what region of the shadows to turn into celshading due to the transitioning of soft-shading making it difficult for me to determine where to establish the flat shadows. Many tutorials on celshading don't elaborate on that aspect. I'd love for you to do a separate video on doing anime style in general where you go in depth on applying celshading and highlights!
Gryphy The Griffin Chick Pokémon Flying-Normal Gryphy is a loyal Pokémon and would make for a good starter, if it wasn't so rare. It's nested high in the mountains, but in ancient times, people believed they nested in clouds. Couriffon Flying-Fighting The Griffin Pokémon It loves to train so it can get stronger, faster, and higher flight. It can carry two people: one on it's back, and one in it talons. Aquilaeo Flying-Fighting The Griffin Pokémon It flies at 200 miles per hour and can carry 600 pounds. During medieval times, royalty would use them to guard their treasure.

The sfx are excessive bro turn them down at least
No need to worry, I will pay very close attention to the SFX next episode.
10:27 I thought it was Mankey's colors lol
Let's go a new video! (By the way, can you do a tutorial how to draw in Kenji Watanabe's (old Digimon) style?
I hope we can get a video on the My Singing Monsters Artstyle.
Hello I'm Ms Valencias student!
Incredible stuff! I’ve been drawing some fakemon, but it’d be cool to try and emulate some of the older styles! The tip with the textured brushes is great too. I always use a smooth brush, I’ll see if textured brushes help my lineart
this video is like, staggeringly high quality and so useful. thank you and great job :)
This video is so full of useful information. I hope it gets more views, it certainly gave a lot of insight for me, especially for the early gen styles
Guide to the *BLUEY* Art Style!!! PLEASE
I just naturally do that thing with the first art style where you round the corners of tangents and stuff when drawing my own Fakemon, I've been doing it for the same reason so I'm glad others do it too
Hello there :D
I subscribed xD
This was a lot of fun as well, I definitely think the CRT details could come in handy for some art. Also, if you wanna do more cartoon artstyles, maybe the artstyles of Friz Frieling, Chuck Jones and Tex Avery? 3 of the core directors of Looney Tunes' classic shorts
Love how detailed you get into very tiny and small details that really help bring these artsytles together. Definitely gonna be trying to replicate the watercolor and anime styles at some point.
EDIT: I had an additional paragraph about the loud SFX being distracting, but then I scrolled down a few comments and noticed that you had already addressed that, so I've removed it
What about Legend of Zelda art style?
Can you please do an art style study of gravity falls?
Art styles I want to learn is classic Disney, Warner Bros, Legend of Zelda, Hanna Barbera, Golden Sun, Don Bluth, and Sonic.
Do Sonic game styles please!
Hello, Thanks for upload this video, is entertaining and educational, makes understand better about Pokémon artstyle could you make later a part 1.5 investigated the different art style from the main Pokémon cartoon show, was a controversy that since Sun and Moon saga, also I wish to make the characters Star Butterfly and Marco Diaz from Disney's Star VS The Forces of Evil in 2 art styles during Star's show running, which Pokémon was in the end of XY saga (the fingernails) and the entire Sun and Moon saga, I wish to see both Star and Marco in both art styles both I need to know how works, could you? please
currently got this video on my homepage. I don't know you nor have i seen any other video so far. but wow. this is some good quality right here. you got me hooked from the first second to the last bc of all these edits. good job
LET’S GO!!!!
What if you made something that shows how to mimic the Zelda style? I’m probably going to use this to make my fakemon region, Tradja
As the animation cels age, the paint will eventually absorb with the black ink, making a darker color.
imagine doing this with a mouse when you're left-handed....yeah, not fun
I'll stick to paper, but thanks for the tutorial anyway :^)
My gosh my dude I randomly found your first video and I'm blown away by how good you are at copying these art styles.
I love this I'm literally tearing up
hey! what about to deconctruct Ace Attorney trilogy and MegaMan/X/Zero/ZX/Battlenet/starforce/legends and etc? It can be very interesting
Dudes entire youtube career was like an hour long
Don’t worry, by the end of this year it will be at least two hours 😉
I’m so bad at the Pokémon Art Style that most of the Pokémon that I draw are Ultra Beasts because they’re so different from all other Pokémon.
This is exactly the type of channel I was looking for, hope to see more soon. Any plans to take on the various art styles used in Fire Emblem? (Kozaki, Hidari)
try the Plants VS. Zombies artstyle from pvz1, pvz2 and pvz3!
Your videos are amazing man, it totally worth the wait
Also i have a suggestion if you want to do it at least
¿Would you do a tutorial of the DDLC art style?
Gryphy
The Griffin Chick Pokémon
Flying-Normal
Gryphy is a loyal Pokémon and would make for a good starter, if it wasn't so rare. It's nested high in the mountains, but in ancient times, people believed they nested in clouds.
Couriffon
Flying-Fighting
The Griffin Pokémon
It loves to train so it can get stronger, faster, and higher flight. It can carry two people: one on it's back, and one in it talons.
Aquilaeo
Flying-Fighting
The Griffin Pokémon
It flies at 200 miles per hour and can carry 600 pounds. During medieval times, royalty would use them to guard their treasure.
PLEASE COVER DIGIMON ARTSTYLE! It’s one of the most unique and interesting ones, it has a cool punk and “dirty” aesthetic.
I love this. Broken down into understandable chunks that I can actually go practice myself...subscribed!!! 😊
That amazing video! ❤ best analysis ☆
Studio Ghibli also has a amazing art style/ design like Totoro, haku, no face, Calcifer...
I don't know how they make but is always so simple/minimalist/clean/ small colors ans shapes but its perfect, fits so well and everybody knows how is the character is and buy a lot of money on 😅
Sugestion: Studio Ghibli art style 🧡
This was way cool, fellow artist. I can't wait until you tackle all the art styles of the Smash Bros. franchises. Instant sub.
This is great! VERY accurate to the real ones (btw PLEASE make a PaRappa video, with the all styles being: PaRappa games, promotional art, and the anime)
Hi there! You’ve got yourself a new subscriber! This was such an in depth style analysis, really well explained and interesting! I’ve been wanting to draw a pkmn oc for a while now, but I just never got around to it. This makes me want to break out my iPad and get to it! Now I just have to decide which style 😂
Overall, excellent video, I look forward to seeing more, and for the record I didn’t mind the sfx. 😊
