Laura Maliszewska can you make a video about the facilities of expanding one's vocabulary as well as reinforcing the listening and reading skills...I'll be so thankful if you do that for me or for us...much love ❤
I have an online course that is dedicated to helping you learn vocabulary better and improving your listening and reading skills, among other things ❤ The link is in my bio if you'd like to check it out!
Hi Laura, I'm so glad I came across your video because I'm in a HUGE dilemma. Like you, I'm a language teacher and I love my job, but I got accepted into an English Literature PhD programme in 2021 and it's my lifelong dream come true. I couldn't make a decision though, so like you, I postponed my PhD to give myself time to think and talk to people. I resonated with many of your experiences in the video so I nodded my head vigorously in different places! It's great to know I'm not alone and now I have a better idea of what to do. I think this is the first time I've ever commented on any video on TH-cam, I felt I had to let you know how helpful you were, thank you!
I know this video is old, but I relate to it soooo hard. I earned my MA in art history and just don’t think a PhD is right for me right now….I also don’t see myself being a great researcher, but I love knowledge. I decided not to do a PhD for the exact same reasons you did. I feel so much less alone now, so thank you! ❤️
how are you feeling with your decision now? it’s been 5 years and I’m starting to reconsider. not sure where this will go but this is the first time I’ve thought about maybe doing the phd… 😬🥲🫡
Wise choice. I think the worst thing of a PhD program is how underpaid it is, and also that we are not sure whether we will get a job in the future. I have already submitted my PhD thesis, but if I hadn't worked, I would probably be able to apply for a good job that pays the money. Anyway, I think that only if you don´t care about the money, it is worth it to do a PhD.
Hi Laura, listening to your story makes me have goosebumps. I am a 6th-year postdoc, who has just left academia last month. I am going through the same process of asking my value system, reflecting life priority, and journaling my thoughts every day. It's a tough process but so important! The process of gaining self-awareness and acceptance to personal value, the financial situation is essential for PhD, and I agree with you that many people might see the glamorous sides and didn't fully consider the COST of a PhD! Sorry about your mom! I think you are going to make her feel proud that you embrace your priority and make decisions that are aligning with your value. @21:23 I felt the same way "coming out" with my advisor that I no longer want an academic career. I am happy they are respectful of my decision. Thank you for sharing your story! I know it will inspire many people out there.
Hi Laura, thanks so much for your video. I’m doing a PhD and your journey has really resonated with me. I think you made the right choice for yourself. I wish I had that insight earlier on! Best wishes, Nicola
You are so authentic, your love ones would be very proud of you. Thank you for your help in everything. You are unique, dont lose that because of difficulties. Linguistics is one of the most useful sciences in the world. Well done so far!! They should hire you in the University....Thanks again!!
I'm also struggling with whether to get a Ph.D. or not. I feel so relaxed after hearing about your reasons. It helps me to think about my own situation, thank you so much for sharing your opinions, xo!
This is so interesting. I’m in love with academia but there’s so many issues and hardships in academia that I’m not entirely sure about it. I think this is a really cool video tbh and I hope to figure out ways to involve myself in the research interests that I like on my own time. Btw, what did you use to build your website?
I can't believe your english studies/background, it's really incredible! In addition to, I just want to say that no matter doing or not doing your Phd i always support you. Ps1. I felt incredibly shocked when you mentioned Leo in a part of your video, I did. Ps2. Oh my Gosh, Max is so cute! 🐺💘
Laura, thanks for sharing! Could you please tell us which books about Ph.D. life you were mentioning? I'm interested in the section about what kinds of personalities/ values could match with those interests.
May I ask what if one do if someone have a master degree but still unemployed for that particular working sector, but he cannot turn back to the starting point because he has already overqualified and job skills mismatch for another field's starting position. What should he do?
@@LauraMaliszewska average PhD time is 6-7 years - that is a lot of time in one's life for a "title" - right? Maybe this is why about half of PhD ppl quit before getting their degree.
Hello. The Ph.D (Doctor) it's one of the highest Academical Degree. After you Finished your Major, you can do a Master, after that, you 'you would be able' to do the Ph.D. This Degree requieres commitment, Constancy & Determination, intelectually is a Changelle, you will Choose a 'Toopic, Theme' for Research, you have a Supervisor tha follows your advance with it, as Laura mentioned, at the end, You Have To Write a Report of 100,000 Words (kind) about your Findings. It's a Challenge, but you'll Learn A LOT tha you DID NOT KNOW ABOUT YOUR FIELD OF STUDY.
My apologies but you appear to be an INFP. INFPs usually do well as humantities PhDs but they may not be natural researchers. They are more on the creative side than the research side. Your values and expressing them usually matters most for INFPs. Deciding not to do a PhD was a good decision in hindsight. Good luck.
it's amazing that you've allowed yourself to think you know me and what drives my life decisions based on one short youtube video :) I love that for you, sending you so much love

Oh I understand. I am applying to PHD and Master's programs for international relations to study China and Pakistan relations.

me caes muy bien, chica polaca.
How can someone be convinced that they want to do a PhD and have no idea what specialty they want to do the PhD in?
maybe they want what is associated with the title or the overall experience of pursuing a PhD?

I mean, you never know what someone's real motivation is, so that's hard to say.
What is your job now?
I am a language mentor.
Could you put subtitles en inglish?please, because I learn inglis with you.
what is PhD?
PhD is the highest university degree

I'm actually an ENFJ! And I still wouldn't make a good researcher haha thank you for leaving such a thoughtful comment 😍
She found TH-cam to be more lucrative, sad really.
