General is as high as it goes in the ranks. Brilliant piece of writing for sure. Iroh is a Legend. If it wasn't for politics, he is strong enough to fold anybody. He could have quite literally scrubbed the floor with Ozai and Azula.

@@DigitalDNA Pretty sure the show writers confirmed that Ozai was the strongest firebender in the world at the time. Of course, in a real 1v1, I still give it to Iroh, due to his lightning redirection (and Ozai's lack thereof).

@@thisstuffisdumbi know what you mean, and i know you’re half joking, but I actually love the way she specified “Only justice will bring peace”, because in her example, there wasn’t really any other option to ensure justice and the protection of her people. But I think she understands that the same isn’t automatically true for Aang’s situation; so she’s not saying “You have to kill him, because it may be the only way to bring justice”, she’s saying “You have to bring him to justice, even if it means killing him.” The killing is conditional, but justice isn’t.

    • @forkxin
      @forkxin ปีที่แล้ว +16

@@JesusOfPaign It's interesting because while it definitely feels like the Avatars are telling Aang to kill him, and Aang certainly takes them that way, they never actually SAY that. They tell him he has to be decisive, he has to shape his own destiny, that only justice can bring peace, and that he has to look beyond his own spiritual enlightenment but they never actually tell Aang what to do specifically.

For me, the moment Iroh explains that Zuko will have to be Fire Lord always gets to me. Just something about him describing how far he's come and the realization of how proud we are of this young man--ooh, I'm getting misty-eyed right now. 🥹
I also just love the brief pause before everyone leaves on their separate missions. There's such a perfect sense of momentum and stakes in the way they silently look at each other, like "This is it. This is what we've been building up to, it doesn't get any bigger."

I do think Yang Chen makes an oversight though. Aang is not just some air bender; he’s the last air bender. If he abandons their culture, philosophy, and lifestyle, the genocide of the Air Nomads will finally be complete. What’s more, doing so would mean the might-makes-right philosophy of the fire lords since Sozin is correct, and the philosophy of the Air Nomads was truly inferior and should be extinguished. The purity and incorruptibility of Aang is, I believe, what drew the lion turtle to him, and is certainly what allowed him to end the war the way he did. It’s why he was the perfect avatar to end the war, as can be seen by comparing him to past avatars.

Avatar Yangchen’s wisdom is the most interesting to me. She believes, as Aang does, that all life is sacred and that the taking of life is morally wrong. Yet she still counsels him that ending Ozai’s is necessary for the world to balance itself.
Despite popular opinion, a wrong can make a right. Being bound to one set of morals and ethics limits and constraints your actions, and becomes just another weapon to be used against you.

i think i’ve seen it mentioned that the reason why nyla couldn’t smell aang was because the lion-turtle is so old and powerful it was masking aang’s scent
From an interview that's published at the end of the book Sozin's Comet (which is a novelization of the series finale):
Q: When Aang was on the "mysterious island", Nyla could not locate him, and June concluded he wasn't dead but that he didn't exist. That was a head-scratcher! Can you describe how existence on that "island" was different from either reality or the Spirit World?
Mike: The answer is actually pretty simple. The lion-turtle exists in the reality of the Avatar World, not the Spirit World. But the lion-turtle is thousands of years old, so his ancient, powerful odor masks the scent of anyone on his back. And that's why Nyla couldn't smell Aang.
Bryan: Yeah, the lion-turtle's scent is so ancient and pervasive that Nyla just perceives it as the smell of the earth itself.

Omg!!!! You both look amaz-za-zing!!!!! Props on the cosplay! This episode is invigorating to the max! It's like teaching you that you could accomplish practically anything if you stick true to your own beliefs, and not allow the world to say " you can only complete something this way." Even captain Kirk from StarTrek has beliefs like this, and others. Love it, dig it, live it. 😂❤

There is definitely a lot more to the lion turtle. (First referenced in the Wan shi tong spirit library) But you will need to watch Korra to fully understand.

If there's one thing I would change about this series, it's that lion turtles and energy bending needed a little bit more setup. I'm aware that there are several small lion turtle cameos throughout the series, but it would have been nice for there to have been something more concrete near the beginning of the last season to tell us what exactly they are, or at least how ancient and revered they are. Also, I'll never understand why the lines Aang hears in the last episode "before the elements, we bent the energy within ourselves" were never actually spoken by the lion turtle to Aang in this scene. Very strange choice. Despite all that it still manages to be one of the best finales of any show ever

Really cool thing no one ver talks about, in the first episode as zuko chases aang, you see the bottom of his foot and the lightning scar as it would be in real life. Lightning takes the fastest path to the ground typically the bottom of the foot.

It essentially carries the world on its back, supporting it and providing spiritual wisdom and care for the world through unseen influences
