  • The disruptive technologies of generative ai programs are having interesting effects on artists and designers around the world in unexpected ways. How will these technologies have larger impacts on creativity and media consumption in the years to come? Listen as artist and designer Ethan Ramirez describes his spiraling fascinations and concerns about this unexplored technological horizon. Ethan Ramirez is a central Texas artist and craftsman whose creative endeavors focus on story telling through the layering of different materials and the creative use of space. In 2019, Ethan decided to attend Texas State University to explore how a professional education in Interior Design could be layered with his artistic background and his practical experience building tiny homes and furniture. Since coming to university, Ethan has been afforded the opportunity to work with the architecture firm HKS and the social impact studio CoAct as they continue to address college-aged homelessness. Ethan is the leader of the Texas State interior design organization “1988,” which helps connect interior design students to design professionals through workshops, designer talks, and networking events. Outside of art and design, Ethan finds himself spending time with friends and building community in San Marcos where he has lived with his wife since 2011. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

as an artist myself I will say, these past couple of weeks I have been seeing more and more of these A.I "artworks" and in my opinion I am genuinely scared that in the near future society as a whole will forget the importance and meaning of what art actually is which is human expression. Art is a reminder of who we are so what happens when we lose that in all forms of media? what happens when we no longer need writers? Poets? musicians? what will be the meaning of artistic expression as a whole?

Wouldn't it be proper to say AI does not generate but mix original art from other artists into its algorithm?

The comment about AI generating endless individually tailored images and advertisements at the behest of a for-profit corporation is the most probable outcome sadly. How we'll learn to cope and not get overwhelmed by that as we fight for our own attention is the question.

What Are You Afraid of and Why?
I am afraid of nothing anymore.
In the past, I was afraid not having enough time to complete everything that I wanted to in life.
That passed a long time ago though.
What is there to fear? If we would see the truth, then we would have no fear of anything at all, because we would then see that we are in the hands of the good and benevolent upper force. Also, we would see that we have no control over our lives, and we thus have nothing to fear. In short, we have nothing to be afraid of.

11:20 It is still "Human interactions". However the messages started to be hostile and toxic like Internet and big corps. Aw.

Thanks for the insightful talk. I'm a hugh fan of AI generated art. It has now given the average person the ability to create some wonderful artwork! The possibilities are are incredible and the sky is the limit.

His stuff looks the same as other artist using same tools. He's not the artist here :)
