When the Queen came to Exeter, my son was driving in his lorry up a side road, to join the main road. He saw some outriders an looked to see who was in the car and he couldn't believe it was our Queen. There were no crowds around as she was on her way out of Exeter. Anyway, my son sounded his horn and waved to her and to his amazement, she waved back to him...he was over the moon about that. What a lovely thing for her to do. My family all miss her terribly 😢

I think its called, "stepping up to the plate" or, "to rise to the occasion", a deliverable feature that is sadly lacking today in the majority of those politicians who put themselves forward to lead us. HM's legacy to the peoples of the Commonwealth did not pass with her, but continues with King Charles, a man so ahead of his times that it's only the present youngsters that can identify with him as being one who has "walked the walk" for decades, rather than like many others just "talking the talk". Yes, with Prince William behind him, and then Prince George, that tunnel is not as dark as it could be in many other places in the World.

River, it was actually in May 2011, that Queen Elizabeth II spoke Irish at a State reception, at Dublin Castle, not on her later visit to Northern Ireland in 2012. She was the first British Monarch to be invited to Ireland since Irish Independence. She addressed President McAleese, and the assembled dignitaries by opening her excellent speech with the words "A Cháirde" meaning 'Friends'. There was an audible gasp, followed by a very warm round of applause. The Queen was visiting Ireland against the wishes of her advisors. She also spoke Irish against their advice. Her speech was deeply moving, and honest. She spoke of things done, that ought not to have been done. She was an impressive woman, with real character and unflinching courage. She had a wonderful Irish tour, was feted wherever she went, and caused great hilarity in Cork, where she spotted a rather odd looking fish at a famous market, and declared that it resembled Prince Philip! Her contribution to Anglo Irish relations could not be overestimated. She was clever, determined, and her instincts were impeccable.

As an American, the Queen was not my country’s leader, but she the only ruler of England I had grown up knowing. She was a magnificent ruler of the Empire and incredible example for us all to hold dear as to how our leaders should be. My heart aches for her loss and may God hold her dear family in His loving embrace to grant them peace.

We mourn a lady like no other -
    beloved Queen, the world's grandmother.
    To Kingdom, Commonwealth a friend,
steadfast and faithful to the end.
A promise kept her whole life long,
she faced her lot with courage strong.
    A gracious, noble inspiration
to her family and her nation.
In duty dealt with what life cast her,
now in the presence of her Master,
    where angels kneel, respect observant,
"Well done, thou good and faithful servant".

I’m a 73 year old Texan, but I’ve always deeply loved her. I lived in England for my 13th year and fell in love with your country and the RF. But during all of my years, I have known of no other woman who carried herself with such elegance, grace, dignity and love of country and service and devotion to her family as this remarkable woman did. I never met her. But the bittersweet tears have flowed today. I miss her. Long live the King. Thank you, dear River, for those special words today, as only you could say them. Mare from Texas

@@saltwithlove2269 Another American here! I saw Elizabeth II's coronation on our grainy black and white TV set when I was four years old in 1953. I was absolutely thrilled! This was a real live Queen actually being crowned! I was an Anglophile even then, based on Peter Pan (my mom read a chapter to me every night, at bedtime) traditional English nursery rhymes, The Wind In The Willows, and other folk tales. The Queen has been a constant throughout most of my life. Fashions change, U.S. Presidents change, eras come and go, but Elizabeth is on the throne of Great Britain. I am still getting used to the fact that Charles III is King now (we are the same age) and Elizabeth is gone. She was one of the last links to my childhood.

Elizabeth II made of her life such a treasure to all humanity, that she truly belonged not only to the people of the United Kingdom, but to the people of the world as a whole. She made of herself everyone's Queen. No matter ones politics or credo, or belief in the ideology of monarchy, there were but few at the time of her death who deep in their hearts could not help but love and admire her. A human being like any other, placed by accident of birth on an elevated plain, she rose to the challenge with grace and dignity, and fulfilled the role for which she was destined in a superb and exemplary fashion. May she Rest In Peace.

I've had that poem since I was a small child, my father gave it to me on a small guided plaque written in beautiful script. I've always treasured it. I've always called it a prayer.

This was a beautiful tribute to your beloved Queen, River. The poem was perfect, and your reading of it made me cry, because you did it so beautifully. Thank you from America.

Although an American, I loved and revered the Queen my entire life. I miss her greatly. 😢

Hi River what an absolutely beautiful and moving tribute to Queen Elizabeth. It brought me to tears. I maybe American, but I'm a staunch Royalist. Thank you again

To lose parents so close together is devastating. For King Charles to work like he has this year is a wonderful achievement and The Late Queen, his mummy would have nothing but pride and admiration for him. The poem; beautiful and beautifully read thank you River
