    something is really wrong with youtube's algorithm in general. you search for something, and as soon as the results peter out you get either manosphere content, disturbing violent videos or eugenia cooney. there has to be more than just engagement driving that.

    • @gracefoster7587
      @gracefoster7587 ปีที่แล้ว +232

      I absolutely agree, there is something absolutely vile about the TH-cam algorithm and the Eugenia, the violent/gory content, and manosphere content gets pushed out to people who aren’t even trying to find that stuff, which makes it more popular. I was literally looking up “lemon peel crochet stitch” the other day and after scrolling down through maybe 10 videos that were relevant to my search, the next video suggested was of a child dying, and then some videos with bloody wounds and poorly done medical stitches.

    Being online is fueling her ED. At this point I don’t believe she could be healthy and be present on the internet at the same time. She gets so much validation here why would she want to change? Not to mention how uncomfortable it is for her body to go through the changes and bowel issues. The people that raised her and the world has failed her and she’s at a point of no return, she’s almost 30 and is still so dependent on others

      Not necessarily. I grew up before the Internet, and there were plenty of people I knew who had eating disorders and just refused to get help, or believed being extremely thin was healthy. I have a family member with a mental health condition that I have taken to the doctor numerous times to seek help. She is not online, but just like Eugenia, she believes she is fine. She refuses to seek longer term treatment that could help her. Eugenia’s family should help her, but ultimately, her getting help is up to her. Many people have reached out to her. I do not understand why she does not get help. Eugenia being in or offline will not change this. Deplatforming people is wrong and not the answer

People are mass reporting her in TH-cam and nothing is done even though her content is in clear violation of the TOS. A lot of people are trying to help her. I refuse to even give her a single view. But the video of her dancing in the lavender outfit was shown on a news clip on a Houston news station which is probably why it got so many views. Yeah, Jaclyn Glenn TRIED to get Eugenia help and had her 5150 a couple of years ago... Completely burning down every bridge within their friendship, unfortunately... But she had to do it because she felt her friend was 💀ing in front of her eyes... I think she was in treatment for like 4 months so she did technically stay longer than the 5150 amount of time that they would force her to stay in treatment... But then once she left the program... clearly her mother never followed up and got her the proper long term help that she needed. So yeah, it is ultimately her mother being abusive and controlling... Her mother literally screamed verbal abuse at Jaclyn over the phone when the 5150 was happening... And tried to not let it happen... So she very clearly is not seeing that her child is slowly unaliving herself.... She sees that there's nothing wrong with Eugenia and ACTIVELY tries to prevent people from getting Eugenia help.
      Jaclyn Glenn talks about it in a TH-cam video 4 year ago with her now husband and another mutual friend detailing how the whole thing went down. It's pretty bleak. But honestly I'm SO proud of them for trying as hard as they could to help her... Even if it meant that Eugenia no longer wanted to be friends with them.

      A common symptom of anorexia, especially when extreme, is not wanting to get help, or not believing that you need help. In this type of situation, the best thing to do would be for a parent/ guardian to commit her to a treatment facility at least to the point where she isn’t on deaths door. Obviously her family do not care about her getting better. While technically she does have free will, the mental illness (anorexia is both a mental and physical illness) is causing her to not think clearly. Especially considering the fact that your brain also needs food to work properly, you can see ugh the fact that she often stutters and loses track of what she is thinking. So yeah I don’t think it’s entirely just her fault.

    I think it's all so incredibly sad. She is extremely unwell mentally, to the point where I don't think she even recognises that she is unwell. She needs an awful lot of intensive psychiatric care, but it's really an indictment of the mental health system that she hasn't had it. Severe mental illnesses don't get the attention or funding they need, and there aren't enough psychiatric professionals out there who have the ability to treat people with complex illnesses such as Eugenia. Eating disorders aren't just about food. Her physical appearance, shocking as it is, is not actually the most concerning part of her illness. It's the mental side of it.
    Mental health funding and the conversation around mental illness is focused mostly on less severe illness. We don't even really recognise or understand people who are as ill as I have been and I think Eugenia is. It's still treated as something you have to "take personal responsibility for" or that you're choosing to do, even though it upsets others. That's not the case and it's ultimately really harmful to talk about mental illness in this way. You don't just choose to become better. You might not even know what you want, except to not feel like this. Nothing feels real and you can't take in information about your actions. The world is a terrifying place and everyone is out to get you, they're going to force you to do things that you don't want to do and they're shouting and it's all just too much.
    I honestly don't know what can help Eugenia at this point. I think having people around her, who aren't judging her, aren't trying to force her to eat and are just there, supportive and listening to her will be beneficial. Beyond that, I don't know. Her illness is so deeply rooted that I'm not sure she can be helped. It's all just heartbreaking.

    I have ocd. Giving us reassurance when we fish for it is the worst. And in healing and coping my loved ones know when I’m searching for reassurance and know to not give it. Views and comments of Eugenia’s page are only feeding her “reassurance” seeking. Like arguing with a conspiracist- refuting their belief only fuels their opposition. Report and hide Eugenia’s content at all costs

She shouldn't have a platform but bc she isnt technically promoting that lifestyle, we can't report it. There will always be people who will watch her content, as sad as that may sound. It's a brutal situation. Free speech is vital to a well functioning society. And there are relatively clear and easy lines such as inciting violence. But this... no easy answer. I'm incredibly opinionated and I actually don't have one on this.
      All I can think of is to include content warnings and age restrictions. But where is the line for that? Eugenia's appearance is so extreme that the issue is obvious. But what about Kim Kardashian hawking weight loss teas that cause diarrhea (sorry, _detoxing_)? That kind of crap cumulatively leads to people developing and acting on disordered eating. And who decides? TH-cam? Zuckerberg? The government?
      No easy answers. Just a tragic situation.

    I come at this from the perspective of having severe OCD and Body Dysmorphic Disorder= the compulsion to cause myself physical harm including a full blown ED. Eugenia is only one of millions of people being let down by the mental health systems around the world. i’m in Australia and have personally got lucky with my current outpatient treatment team but have experienced terrible care while inpatient. I saw people unalive. In all kinds of ways too. If her life does end I hope eventually it can be seen as an example of everything not to do and hopefully some idea of what should be done to save someone with a severe mental illness + devastating physical consequences. Or at the very least support them through their end of life. She needs support, that’s what breaks my heart. She knows she is dying, and it’s quite likely no medical intervention can stop that now. Surely she deserves psychological support to comfort her as she reaches end of life. It hasn’t been a choice for her. And trust me, she is suffering badly.

      @@megadeltsmarcy I mean I understand your point and it’s valid. At some point though it’s like.. I wish this energy was extended to other people too. There’s younger people who suffer, who maybe actually WANT the help but don’t receive it. At some point you have to own and take responsibility, although I do feel this has been going on since she was a child. She was neglected and therefore is trapped within the mental capacity of seemingly a teenager. So abuse. Kind of like a Gypsy Rose Blanchard

    • @GW-gz8jh
      @GW-gz8jh ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@BabyBoy_Milothe point is she is often infantilized because she acts like a teenager. People need to stop paying attention to her because it validates her even more. It’s no one’s fault that they are mentally ill. However it is their responsibility in either seeking help or accepting the help that’s offered. Society cannot force her to get better until she’s ready to and wants to. For some that day comes. For others it doesn’t. But you cannot force someone into true recovery.

And she’s chosen to stay the way she is. It’s like a drug addict. Sometimes you just have to walk away. That’s how they wanna live then let them and move on.
    And yes this is coming from someone who actually experienced and recovered from a serious eating disorder. I made a choice and I fought. And I don’t have a lot of empathy for people who can’t do the same.

      I think it would help you to know that a SYMPTOM of anorexia is not wanting help/ not believing you are sick enough to need help. Yes, even with people as thin as her. It’s good that you made the choice to fight out of that system, but the help she has been offered hasn’t been achievable for her. At this point in her eating disorder, the best thing to do would be to involuntarily commit her to a treatment facility so she doesn’t die. Her parents could easily be helping with this but they choose not to. I have a feeling that if you had zero support system during that time in your life, you wouldn’t have wanted to be better either. Just something to think about, as someone who also suffered from severe anorexia.

    I don't intend to shame anyone, I just genuinely am trying to understand: when an obese person who likely does or will have serious health issues associated with their weight celebrates their body on social media it's body positivity. When someone like Eugenia does it, she's spreading toxic messaging and promoting eating disorders. I think both are (somewhat indirectly) promoting unhealthy bodies and normalising two different eating disorders. Why is there such a big double standard???

    About the likes: Go to Of Herbs and Altars' video. Check Eugenia's comment section. People are being nice because she is assumed to be as good as dead. It's okay to like a video of her dancing. She's not an ED. She's a person. There are people who like that person and they like for her to enjoy herself. Especially since she actually lost more weight lately when most thought that was impossible. She is ill. The illness has taken over just like cancer can take over. She shouldn't have to hide any more than a person close to death from cancer. (Nobody who is healthy looks at her and thinks it's a good idea to start starving themselves. That's not how ED's work.)

      Society is a massive system of interconnecting systems. It's capitalism that rewards extreme behaviour. It's social media that can't or won't distinguish between negative or positive engagement. It's millions of people each individually choosing to watch, comment and like or dislike a video. It's misogyny/patriarchy that teaches children and young people impossible to attain body ideals. And so much more.
      Yes, individual people in her life have failed Eugenia. But that failure needed to be supported by massive and interconnected systems (society) that elevated an individual tragedy into international super stardom of morbidity.
      I would lastly point out that it _can't_ only be her mother that failed her, even if that parental failure was monumental. Because that implies that every young person who has a severe mental illness, addiction, or has otherwise fallen through the cracks, has done so exclusively due to a parental failure. And that is just not true.
