The finger thing is a total non issue after you get used to it in like a few days. You just move your finger forward a couple MM. Ball bearing lock would have been a little bit better though. Overpriced now with the increase, though.
Slicey Dicey But it seems like nobody at Spyderco actually handles the knife after it was designed to see the issues. Please at least check the functionality and ergos before issuing a $300 SRP knife.
Got a DLC version a couple of Saturdays ago. One difference I noticed is the Spyder hole and the spine are quite sharp. The stonewashed version is more comfortable but I love both.
I got mine right after I got out of the hospital. I was disappointed. The blade didn't want to drop and yet, there was some side to side movement. Also, having been used to my PM2 (I had 2 of them at the time. Now I have 3.) I thought the knife was very heavy. I kept it in my closet and didn't bother with it for maybe a couple of months but I didn't want to give up on it. I got it to drop with just a couple of drops of Frog Lube on each washer but the blade play was still there. I just decided one day to bring it out and disassemble the knife, clean everything and lubricate the pivot. I put it back together using blue Loc-Tite and tightened the pivot screws all the way. I was thinking that when I reassemble the knife, I was going to test it and back out the screws a teeny, tiny bit until I find the right balance of blade drop and rigidity. Well even with the screws tightened all the way, the blade was dropping beautifully and there was zero blade play. I haven' touched it since and now, it's taken over from my S110V Para Military 2 as my favorite Spyderco.
It’s an old video, I know. However, if you disengage the compression lock a little farther up the tab with the tip of your finger the blade guard wont smack it on the close. Because of the Shaman, I got in the habit of disengaging all my compression locks this way and I don’t even think about it anymore... But hey, more Shamans for the rest of us.
For me, it is a looker and I do not easily warm up to Spyderco knives. However, I look at its price and I immediately think of what OTHER knives I could get. Good review, my friend. 😁 Good thing Flanny avoided severe damage being swept up by Mrs. LTK! I'd hate to have your next show be a Flanny Memorial.
Yes I've noticed that I just bought new exclusive and yeah it does hit my finger I have no idea why they did that I don't even know if you can modify it away either
Nice knife, I sent mine back. Too heavy to be practical (not too big, just too heavy). And how do you make a knife where the lock is 60% blocked for swinging open (a cool attribute to the compression lock), and then bangs your finger with 4oz of steel when closing it unless you practice like a Jedi. I really tried to consciously deal with the hammered finger issue, I wanted to love the knife and overlook it as a small problem, but it became frustrating to know that I paid $190 for a heavy knife with a lock problem that I had to try to look past. If they fixed the lock problem, I would probably pay $190 again for the heavy impractical knife because other than the lock issue it's awesome and I would deal with the weight.
I liked this knife, but not for $200. $130-40 I'd be more likely to buy. Good to find out about the design glitch with the blade part hitting finger with compression lock. That should not have been over looked. Fully agree 200 dollars needs S110 or M4 or even B. 390. With youtube, internet sales and knife popularity the manufacturers have lost touch with reality.
I have the other one paid $180 from blade hq! I love this knife carry it everyday.. when I first got it it did pinch my finger flipping it closed but over time playing with it I place my finger in the corner and know how to flip it and let go in time..
I never really caught on to this knife at the original price. Not sure but there was nothing compelling enough to move on it. Then the price shot up & I was hearing what you & others are saying about the nub at the end of the choil coming up to hit their finger. I am not understanding why this little cue was not picked up before the knife was released. Now I am seeing the Shaman popping up on the used market quite regularly at the $120 -130 range in near new condition.
I have the same black S30V Shaman, I only bought one because I had $47.00 credit on Knife ship free website. So I got mine for $171.00 which to me is still too expensive. I did not have a Shaman so I bought it, I do not mind S30V steel heck I own GEC traditional folders in 1095 carbon steel which I like a lot. I am not a steel snob or nit picker. I do not buy multiple Spyderco knives of the same model just because of a sprint run or exclusive with different steel or handle color. I just wanted 1 Manix2 , 1 Shaman , Native Chief etc. To have from this company I still may buy a Para 2 someday I do not have that one. The thing is if you do not like a knife sell it or do not buy it at all, look at reviews on youtube first . I would never buy and pay the Ebay prices on Sprint runs or exclusives resold for double or triple the original cost. Everyone likes or dislikes a knife for some reason but another person may like what we do not like. I do not own a Benchmade but I hear they have a better warranty and will sell you a new blade for your knife or replace it at the factory as well as free sharpening for life. that says a lot about a company caring for the buyer long after the sale of their product. I may get a Benchmade soon as well for my collection . Look at reviews first before you buy or try a knife in a store if you can.
LTK, you seem to be doing less videos these days. :( I hope you'll be doing some more on recent TwoSun knives - they just keep putting out beautiful models. Cheers man
After playing with mine for a month or so you don't even notice it. I flick it closed and move my finger at the last second and it's a non issue. I did get mine on a gun trade at my LGS in the $160 price point. Had I been paying cash I would have definitely went with something like the Kizer Sheepdog.
Interesting knife, maybe I'll buy it, but: 1 The blade is too thick to be a good slicer...and a great edc...I prefer my manixs and para 2.. 2 finger choil for real hard use? I don't leave my finger on the blade if I have to use my knife for hard use....still prefer a Triad lock for these things. 3 the blade that hits your finger when you close the knife is a big issue for me
Does anyone know why the price increased about 30 to 40 bucks over night? I have a shaman (bought BHQs dlc m4 pm2 exclusive but it was defective so sent it back). Used the refund money to get this guy, I love it but cant help but feel I overpaid. Though I will say this knife will handle way more abuse than a pm2 based on tip shape... Oh well I have at least one more week to return for a refund and get another pm2. Then again, they already cost 150 at least, what's another 30 for a Conan the destroyer folder?
Thank you.... that little nub is dumb. It has kept me from buying it. Everyone seems to be ok with it but no... not for me. You are the voice of reason haha thought I was taking crazy pills!
That nipple is the only thing that has stopped me and that price it should be flawless to me I love Spyderco you know that but I would take the pm2 or military hands down all day long I love the manix xl I got from you enjoyed the video brother 👍
Way too expensive. Expensive knives are an oxymoron because knives (especially like these w/ non-premium materials) are tools used for work, and when they work they get dirty and damaged. Having expensive 'worker' knives doesn't bode well for confidence because the user's always worried about chipping this or damaging that, and has to be extra careful, to an autistic level, about not losing the knife. The mindset conflicts with doing solid no-frills work. S30v is way too generic now to command a $190 price. Are we freaken kidding here? I can buy S35vn knives as the TacNWO knife $30, LAPG s35vn knife $40, or the Factor Iconic $70. The Factor Iconic knife btw shits on this knife in everyway. It's way lighter - weighs 4oz, got CF/titanium, super ergonomic and a longer cutting edge. I have 3 of those and the heat treat on it is excellent. I facepalm so hard when sheeple jump all over knives just by a brand name. I have to admit the compression lock is a good lock and the blade shape of the Shaman is attractive. Spyderco needs to step up its game and either use titanium or mill out much more than the pecker-holes they've milled out, fix that compression-lock issue, and use at least s35vn or s90v to make this knife even begin to worth $190.
My 4in Cold Steel Talwar is what this knife hopes, but can't be (except taking $ out of your wallet). It's got a better steel, better cutting edge, better lock, more ergonomic handle at a lighter package.
S30V was a super steel ten, maybe 12 years ago. When I see it on a knife today I imagine somebody bought up some overstock someone found in the back of a warehouse somewhere - for cheap.
s30v is not bad.. back in 2005, but not a supersteel anymore when you can get s35vn knives for $40-$60. To ask $200 for it w/ other non-premium materials is preposterous.
Sure is! About six months or so ago (time is moving so fast it could be longer) I suddenly noticed quite a few new knives coming out in S30V. I can't explain it, other than thinking someone must have found a load in a corner of a warehouse somewhere and started offering to knife companies at a bargain-basement rate. You're right, it's not bad; it's just that there are so many great knife steels available at lower prices than S30V was way back in 2005 or whenever, as you said.
Yep exactly
Maybe they handled it and didn’t think that it was an issue.
Got a DLC version a couple of Saturdays ago. One difference I noticed is the Spyder hole and the spine are quite sharp. The stonewashed version is more comfortable but I love both.
Just got my full black serrated version today. Such a great knife! Great review Luv as usual man... stay sharp! 👊🖐😉😊

My favourite knife. Just perfect.

I thought it was just me! Thanks for bringing it up cause now I don't feel so pickie now!
I’ve been carrying my new Shaman for a couple weeks now, love it! Only thing I would change is grip texture, a little to smooth for me.
I have the all black PM2 but if I got a Shaman, I think I’d get the one with the silver blade that you thought you were getting.

FINALLY IT IS HERE: A GOOD LOOKING KNIFE ( I.M.O.) MADE BY SPYDERCO....UNFORTUNATELY IT IS WAY TOO EXPENSIVE!...( NICE REVIEW, BY THE WAY)....
That looks great in all black. I rarely see black blades on spidercos
I have the other one paid $180 from blade hq! I love this knife carry it everyday.. when I first got it it did pinch my finger flipping it closed but over time playing with it I place my finger in the corner and know how to flip it and let go in time..

Do you still have the Spyderco shaman if so I have a new in the box manix 2 coated blade m390
That is normal for the Shaman to hit your index finger when you close the compression lock. Sadly every time I hear that it makes me not want one
The choke-up-grip on the PM2 is not a comfortable because it bends your thumb up very far and the Shaman offers more tip strength.
Another good review from LTK.
....yep, drag out the Dremel :-) ...have a good one....
I wish it had a different lock. I am a lefty.
For those tripping on price, what would you recommend that uses similar materials and has a hard use utilitarian blade shape like this?
Pedro Ordepo Manix 2?
PM2
Jesus. What was the question?
Would love this with a 4.25-inch blade-awesome review dude!!!

I can make mine 'drop shut' by pressing the compression lock at the front. Just time it and let go of the lock.
Its like a para thats actually shaped like a tool
LTK, you seem to be doing less videos these days. :( I hope you'll be doing some more on recent TwoSun knives - they just keep putting out beautiful models. Cheers man
Ron Broeders Great minds think alike. I’ve got the TS56,TS57,& TS88 in hand and reviews are coming out soon. Thanks
Looking forward to them! :D

With practice you can just move fing8out of way before the blade makes it into the case.
You said youre unhappy you were sent the wrong colour. This review in bad haha. I love the all black colour.
Great knife man!!
Just purchased one, definitely going to add Micarta scales to it!

No I understand totally what you're saying, the little teeny ball sack at the back of the blade I don't know what that's for
Thank you.... that little nub is dumb. It has kept me from buying it. Everyone seems to be ok with it but no... not for me. You are the voice of reason haha thought I was taking crazy pills!
Ltk , is that knife as comfy in hand as it looks?
Todd Porter Yes. It’s ergos are very good.
Way way overpriced. Should really be priced at ~$100 and not the $200, and their SRP of $300 is totally absurd.
That nipple is the only thing that has stopped me and that price it should be flawless to me I love Spyderco you know that but I would take the pm2 or military hands down all day long I love the manix xl I got from you enjoyed the video brother 👍
That thing hitting your finger seems like a flaw
Nice but way to costly
Make it longer 200.00 for 3 inch cutting surface F that.
There 270 bucks now

I was gonna get that but it's way to expensive for why your getting. Syderco pricingmm g is out of control. Never spend that on that knife.
This guy cries a lot.
Luv guess what arrive today in the mail!!!
NIK THE GREEK No way.... that Kershaw Natrix ?
LuvThemKnives woooow yeah!
NIK THE GREEK OMG ! How long ago did I send it ? It’s been months... at least. Is the knife intact ?
