Hey thanks for the new way to tie the butterfly knot. I've been doing knots professionally for the last 30 years. I love knots . To the people that have a difficult time, hang in their you will get it. It takes patients and a lot of repetitive pratice. This video is also a big advantage
Super video, I have been camping for years and never used this knots with tarps and guy lines. I used plan ole knots and really badly. With your video I taught myself knots I can use to make life easier and better while camping.
Thanks for watching and leaving such a nice comment. The video isn't perfect, but it's not bad. Since making this one I've also made several other videos on the specific knots, many of which have different ways to tie them. The Alpine Butterfly Knot is my favorite. th-cam.com/video/JazIqg0hPkU/w-d-xo.html
Watched this a while ago. Appreciate that you don't make any assumptions about the viewer's knot-tying abilities! Thanks for sharing and putting this together.
An excellent presentation. One of my favorite knot videos. GOOD: background and branch selection for demonstration\speed of knot demonstration\ love how it was presented twice per knot\ good camera angle\ like the knots chosen\ and most important, what the knots are best used for. Just wanted to say thanks for sharing. Can't wait to use some of these in the backyard, my next camping trip, and my next boat adventure.
I believe you did the taut line two different ways. First time you reversed the third loop direction and the second time you did all 3 loops in the same direction. Also I always used it because when you tighten the slack after making the knot it holds tight. Great for securing objects to a fixed structure.
You might be thinking of the two half hitches, which is an anchoring knot/hitch,. The tautline is suppose to slide, to be adjusted for tension. The 2 loops on the inside are the sliding part of that knot, while the half hitch on the outside is the locking knot/holds it together.
Great video, I really enjoyed it. At my fire department (well, most FD's in the US) the clove hitch is taught to secure extention ladders. The slip clove hitch would really help deployment of ladders on the fire ground.
Hi..on the 2 half-hitches which I used for many yrs loading ships I go around the branch twice instead of once and only need one halfhitch instead of 2 to have the same secure objective. Also I pull it thru doubled ( slip) so as to untie very easy. Great video you have and so interesting as I love knots. My fav that we used alot is the wagoneers hitch or truckers hitch. We used that knot to hold heavy pipes connected to each other and never once had a fail from that knot.
Great video - thx for the time stamps. would have been nice if you could have added a few notes on the pros/ cons of those knots and what they are used for.
Your first 'half-hitch' is an overhand knot, being used as a stopper knot Though a half-hitch and overhand knot are made the same way, they end up laying differently in final form.
Quite useful info nicely presented. The only thing missing is the trucker's hitch which any camper should know when packing gear. Great video though. I have recommended it to my daughter for her camping/festival excursions.
I was wondering why you chose to tie your double sheet bend with the double wrap above the crossover instead of underneath it like most do. Is there specific benefit to that method? Thanks for the great content.
Great Video! I haven't found a video with so many types of knos like yours yet.. The rythem is great and repeting the process again was a very good idea! :-) Though there're simpler ways to explain the Bowline and and Alpine Butterfly knots, It was hard for me to follow these two knots, maybe it's the angle or too fast The Prusik Knot was new for me so thank you! :-)
Whoa. Double Sheet Bend. Both turns of the skinny line should be underneath the standing part of the skinny line. Both turns should lie next to each other.
Thanks for the examples. I found most of what I was looking for. It would be nice to show the knots in their proper application: The 'tautline hitch' is not intended to be snugged up against the anchor, it is intended to slide and hold onto the working line itself so it can be tensioned; the bight of the 'bowline 'is intended be passed through or over an anchor point; the 'prusik' is intended to tied around another line so it can both slide and hold onto the working line, used in climbing - it is used in conjunction with another line that applies intermittent tension to the knot.
Good video, But I think it would've been better to go more in depth about what each knot is best used for, because there is a lot of unfilled space between each knot where you could have told what its used for, I have no idea how to apply these to camping or anything else for that matter, but I'm just a beginner and should probably already know.
I liked your slow easy pace but the alpine knot which I used to do the same way, from trying to follow your demonstration to refresh, found it impossible to follow. Not obvious which rope gets pulled. Now got to go elsewhere to get it right.
You know your knots and I appreciate you doing the video...I just wish you had a dark or contrasting background to show the white rope easier of use a dark rope. I'm NOT a troll...just making a suggestion. ID like to use this video to instruct my grandson, but. Its hard to se3
Hey Lee, Just thought I'd let you know that I'm currently working on a series of videos demonstrating knots. You can find them as they are available in the Playlist. th-cam.com/play/PLU0lZs6TA-Vyyyrn2cMjzwS_aaGjXRxj4.html
Hi Jason I need to connect a 1inch rectangular closed loop to a 1inch closed loop of wire on a mole trap to keep from losing it.I need a permanent connection. What knot would you recommend? Thanks
@darstripboats@darstripboatsAll the reasons I gave this video a thumbs down: When it's not attached to a object what you call a Half Hitch is a overhand stopper knot. Hitches attach a line to a object. Two Half Hitches should be tied after making a full round turn around the captured object, it spreads the tension and makes it easier to untie under strain. The camera angle on the square knot is problematic because your hands obstruct the view half the time, likewise with the Bowline and the Figure of Eight. The first version of the Tautline is wrong. if your knots aren't solidly locked into muscle, you probably shouldn't be teaching them to others. You missed the opportunity to show how the adjustable aspect of the Tautline is best used. Your Sheet Bend is tied left-handed, it's considered the weaker of the two ways to tie it. The Double Sheet Bend is tied wrong. The Prusik should be done with a continuous loop and would serve better with another turn. You did not explain the proper application for the Prusik. You have a nice lighting and, angles aside, good photographic technique, so go back and try again.
I believe you're mistaken. A granny knot is similar to a square knot except instead of going right over left > left over right, you'd go right over left > right over left. The half hitch and granny knot are not similar... well, other than they're both knots.
Johnny Wetoka granny knot is the layman's term for a half hitch, which would be the sailor's term for it. Granny knot is only used when tying the knot by itself whereas half hitch is always used when it is part of another knot.
I know right? I hear that a lot with this video. It was my first knot video. I have a channel dedicated to knots now and have figured out how to film tying knots with a great angle. Still, even with the inexperience in this old video, I'm happy that so many people are able to see the knots well enough to still get something from it.

Great video. One of tge best knott vids i have seen. Tidy knots are important.....
That first knots an overhand not a half hitch (as far as I'm aware). Thanks for taking the time to make this!
Love the way you did the Alpine Butterfly.
this is the best knot demo i have ever seen.. i am fifty seven years old.. love and peace
Thanks for watching and leaving such a nice comment.

However, you brought it all together.

I like the fiador and X knot when I make rope halters for our horses. There was some awesome ones in his line up, so fun to learn new ones.
Love the Constrictor Knot and the Canoeman's Hitch!

Easy and concise. Follow along and you can’t go wrong. Thanks for the great video!

I think it's fine. Audio is great. Music is quiet and in the background. Good video for reviewing all the knots.
You are a great Teacher for us hard heads, thanks.
About the best knot videos around. Thank you a lot.
Awesome instructional video!!!!!!

this video is the best i’ve seen for learning knots.....it sows y0u as if you were standing in his spot......thank you
Interesting video. It would be helpful if you could explain what you would use each knot for. Thanks
In scout camping I had learner these knots.👍👍👍Last knot is to come down from the tree etc safely also collection of rope..
Thank you Jason!!
You're welcome.
Thanks a very informatlve and interesting video. 😎
Great video - thx for the time stamps. would have been nice if you could have added a few notes on the pros/ cons of those knots and what they are used for.
Great selection of knots but very hard to follow. A view point from your line of vision would be easier to follow.
Best demo so far !
Awesome video
Nice video. Thank you!
勉強になります!!しかし覚えられない(汗)

All the important knots nicely presented.
Great job. Thanks, especially doing each knot twice. I think I'll need to see that Alpine butterfly knot around 14,000 times though.
You did a good job with this ,everything is nice and slow 👍🏻
Thank you
Thanks for the information man! Your so good at this

Totally agree. The truckers hitch is definitely one of my go to knots.
I like the beaver cleaned pole you used during the demonstration, nice touch.
I noticed that immediately too!
great stuff
I'm surprised that you didn't include the Trucker's Hitch knot. I might use that knoot more than any other.
Very informative presentation. God job bro.
Great, Thanks to you as I need the last knot get down some items from the roof of my house with no help to untie the rope.
Thanks for tying the sheet bend correctly. Some online sources do not.
You bet!
Wish you would have shown the reason for the taut line. It is used to tighten a line and can easily be loosened.
I enjoyed the first person point of view and explanation of its use. Would be nice to explain their differences since many seem similar.
Great video I’m 19 and I’m a Eagle Scout i know how to tie every knot you tied I just came for support.
jaramaya hayes nice bro

Thank you for the video😊😊😊😊.
im really confused of my project.
Shouldn't the half hitch when doubled become a full hitch? ;)
I learned a few knots
Great! Thank U!

Really like how you tie the Alpine butterfly

you were doing well till the Double Sheet Bend. Both passes around the byte have to go under the original smaller line
we will be camping this January 17-21 2018 im a member of pathfinder club
Thanks a lot
Thanks man very helpful..

Is a dog bright enough to untie a slip clove hitch?
depends on the dog
most probably

Paint one end a contrasting color to help see the mechanism of the rope, the topology.
très utile et bien démontré, je m'abonne. Une bonne idée de mettre un lien direct pour chaque nœud!
merci!

great work. loved it :)
Was surprised I could actually see what you were doing with the white rope and the white background.
Really useful skill, thanks a lot!
Beautiful show of knots granny knot is left over left square knot is left over right and right over left good job sir
thanks!:D
thanks you very much!!! Kisses
Thanks for that info sir! Very good to know.
Hi Jason
I need to connect a 1inch rectangular closed loop to a 1inch closed loop of wire on a mole trap to keep from losing it.I need a permanent connection. What knot would you recommend? Thanks
Thanks. The sheet bend direction is wrong and the butterfly method is the hardest of four. Constrictor is almost impossible to undo. Keep on.
Lots of great knots, but there was not really an explanation on the use of each knot.
Why are Prusik and constrictor knots and not hitches?
First one is just a simple knot we Indian use in every case
u gotta love that thumbed up and thx.
Thanks,Becuase im the seaman thanks for all

Great video, but that background music must go. I still liked and subscribed.
It's nice once, though Double sheet bend to me it's procedure shown on the screen is no ok.. but i love knot tyng..
Unfortunately, your hands are in the way, not a good camera angle for some of the knots.

I will knot 4get to tie these knots.
Some of.your demo is fast and difficult to follow because of your position in the camerA..
This starts with an errror. A "Hitch" fastens a rope to an object! The first knot is NOT a hitch.
I agree... #1 is just a basic overhand as I'd call it.
