I recommend a wide leg stance for poses 2-5. So yes, there is benefit to slowly, over time, widening your leg stance. A good rule of thumb is to try to have your feet as wide as your hands when you stretch your arms out the the sides in standing poses 2-5. The wide leg stance helps you form a broader base and foundation for the pose. Think of a pyramid structure with a wide base being harder to knock over than a structure with a narrow base.
