/* ---- VIDEO INFORMATION ---- */
Ok so Batman Forever was a major milestone at the time of it’s release.
Having the biggest opening weekend of all time it broke the record set by Jurassic Park.
The film changed the landscape of comic book movies and hammered home the idea that these films could be juggernauts.
It was a major course correction from Batman Returns which had a lot of controversy with families. This would then continue in a goofier direction to Batman and Robin…which…yeah…we all know how that turned out.
However in it’s development there was the idea that the film would have a much darker tone.
If you’ve seen the #ReleaseTheSchumacherCut movement then you’ll know there’s a lot of talk online about it.
Kevin Smith has also screened the film and it’s said to be a much more earnest take on the character. These darker turns include an opening at Arkham in which Two Face makes an escape into the night. His old cell ends up becoming Riddlers at the end and it brings things full circle from the opening.
The Red Ledger plot also got much more of a focus. His childhood scenes are fleshed out further with him insisting his parents should go to the cinema.
This somewhat gets touched upon in the final cut but it adds much more weight to this line.
The fact that Tommy Lee Jones HATED Jim Carrey during filming makes me love the performances even more
What he said to Carrey was was lengendary.
That seal song is forever a banger. I didn't know until my late teens that it wasn't originally a soundtrack song
The year this movie came out, literally every radio station would play "kiss from a rose" every other song, even the alternate rock and classic rock stations, like, it was so overplayed, it would come on one station, so we'd change the station, and whatever song would end, and "kiss from a rose" would play, we'd change the station again, "kiss from a rose" try an alt rock station, "kiss from a rose" it was inescapable, we had all the McDonald's toys, the collectible glasses, everything. Lmfao. Great memories tho, one of those big blockbuster movies they don't really have these days.
My father beet me once with that song playing in the background.
@@jennyanydots2389 my ass whippin soundtrack is fire tho. Lmao
@ I've been beet over one hundred times. Twice my father beet me in front of my friends at the bus stop and another time he brought my pet dawg over to the monkey bars and beet that dawg in front of my friends and I. He said it was because I was too lazy to take care of him and that by beeting the dawg in public my friends would shame and bully me into acting right and to stop bringing shame upon my families name. While I am pumpkin headed and have severe cognitive limitations I still understand how shameful my existence inherently is. I need to be beet. My dawg needs to be beet. I should be publicly flogged and disgraced at least once a day. Also I should be forced to wear a scarlet letter tattooed on my disgusting pumpkin forehead.
@ I am paralyzed below the waist from one of the more severe beetings. My father still beets my pets in front of my friends and me if has been drinking all day.
As a kid watching this with my dad, I will always remember him saying “why would they need a combination from INSIDE of the safe?”
For SAFEty reasons, kaboom-cha!
@@hogowar lolololololol
I will accept NO Batman Forever slander in my life. I loved this movie and it’s one of my favorites idc. Jim Carrey was in his bagggg as Riddler and sorry Val Kilmer is the sexiest Bruce Wayne. The score…it was just so much fun as a kid.
Same. Chris O'Donnell as Robin changed my teenage brain chemistry. And it was one of the best soundtracks in the 90s
Val being sexy to you as batman doesn't make him a good one 😂
@ lovely that it’s also my opinion overall and yours is welcome too ☺️
The girls who Chris O Donell was talking to while he was driving the Batmobile was the R&B group, EnVogue
The movie originally started with Two-Face escaping from Arkham, leaving behind a dead guard and the message "THE BAT MUST DIE!" written on the wall of his cell with the guard's blood. Part of that scene was used in U2's video for"Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me". The scene at Wayne Corp. was also earlier in the movie, leading into the standoff at the bank.
I love that it’s not just references or eastereggs but actual commentary about certain things like the infamous relationship between Jim carrey and Tommy Lee jones.
Love your videos, paul. Unlike other youtubers, you dont shout at us like we're children who cant pay attention, you dont waste our time with BS intros, you describe things clearly and succinctly, you don't shy away from making your videos as long as they need to be, and 100% of your content is interesting even to someone who hasnt seen the movie. Youre also an excellent orator with a great sense of humor. The only thing i ask is you let more of your sense of humor shine through in your videos! The "reach" jokes always make me chuckle lol
Btw, Paul, your LOTR videos are legendary. You deserve tens of millions of views on those. It's a shame they didnt get more traction. The algorithm giveth and taketh away. They are, hands down, the the best LOTR breakdown videos on the platform. I've begun recommending them to anyone who mentions LOTR in conversation.
I love how at 33:01 you can clearly see Harvey's WHOLE face getting hit by the acid. This always bothered me when I was younger watching the movie.
Younger you like: “HEY!!!”
Haha yes, I always thought this was just me that saw this.
@ 😂 exactly!
@ 🍻
For me it was always the perfect line of scarring straight down his face
I honestly, unironically love the neon aesthetic of the movie. This is seriously one of the coolest-looking superhero movies of all time. How all the dark action scenes have these really jarringly bright splashes of color. It's like the same style Sin City went in, with the grayscale palette with only a few things being colored, and even reminds me a little of the Hammer horror films that used drab colors but had glaringly bright blood.
I watched this film with my 7 year old the other day. He thought it was amazing. I’d forgotten so much of it…zany, goofy and also some really dark themes. It’s a really ODD film. Makes sense knowing that the director didn’t get their cut of the film out there.
Great rundown as always!
I don't think Nicole Kidman's ever been hotter than she was in Batman forever. I do think she would have made a better poison ivy, at least in a better movie with poison ivy than the one we got.
Ohhh I never thought about her as Ivy! that would have been hot. She was gorgeous in this movie I love the name Chase because of it.
She was beautiful in this.
She was hot in The Invasion.
She's smokin
Hot in this, but loved her in To Die For.
You're the first channel I've ever subscribed as a member. I love you videos. I'm a huge movie geek and seeing all this breakdowns of films I've not seen in years, even decades is the greatest thing! Keep em coming
Same here. Money well spent 😊
Ah thanks so much mate, really really appreciate it
The Flaming Lips song, "And All Your Bad Days Will End" was on repeat for me for a while. I love this song. The entire album is pretty good.
Hey Paul! A little Easter egg you missed was that the "ladies of the night" Robin hits on were members of En Vogue, one of the most successful recording artists of the 90s. [55:34]
I was just about to post this! Great catch.
Great spot yeah, that’s En vogue, Paul must’ve forgotten to mention.
I was shocked that he missed this!
Little fun fact originally joel schumacher wanted Nicole Kidman to play poison ivy in Batman forever, but change it at the last minute since the film already had two villains for the Dark Knight to face against, So he had her play chase meridian.
I saw this film at the cinema, I was 7 at the time. Had the action figures, the Batmobile with the spear firing bumper and a 2-face figure that had a replica coin. It had an amazing “Ping” sound when flicked. Wish I still had it but unfortunately got lost to time.
So glad you did this one Paul. I actually really liked this movie when I saw it at the cinema as a kid. Tommy Lee Jones as Two-Face really killed the film in my opinion though. I think it would have been so much better if someone else had been cast.
I don’t know if it’s because the subject matter of this video is already a bit silly, or if you’re just becoming more comfortable being yourself in front of the camera, but you had me cracking up on this one. So many good little jokes and when you slid down the chair 😂 perfect! Anyway I love your content and I’m glad you made the move to be on camera.
Holy Heavy Spoilers, Batman!
this breakdown...its full of holes
15:15 when I say I actually LOL’d at the ‘Let’s you know what kinda movie it’s gonna be….. ASS!’ line….. I howled! Fair play mate!
Can't wait for your review on Batman and Robin. I loved it as a kid, hated it as a young adult, and love it again as an older adult. The camp is just so much fun
The 1st CD i ever bought was at a swap meet, the OST for Batman 89. I had no idea it was a Prince album. I didnt own a cd player at the time. I just loved the batman symbol on the front.
Later i bought this OST.
Absolutely LOVED these CDs.
man, for Kilmer to learn he got the part whilst literally in a cave full of bats ( i love ghost and the darkness ) is one of the coolest facts ive ever heard!
“Chair! Fuggin hell!” Bahahaha!! You crack me up man
Top Hat - a musical whose entire plot would fall apart is one of the leads just went, "Sorry, what was your name again?"
Recently discovered this channel and I’ve been really impressed with the love and care that goes into the videos. I never knew these was a hidden alternate cut of this movie despite being a big Batman fan. The breadth of the scope on these reviews is fantastic and I really don’t get this from many other places. Great job. Good video.
Regardless if this movie isn’t the best or not, it’s STILL my favorite to this day. Mainly because I was in love with Batman when I was little and this came out when I was 5. It’ll be FOREVER etched into my memory.
"Throbbin Robin" had me dead 🤣🤣🤣
What an amazing breakdown, so many breakdowns are talking about how bad these movies are but you just broke down the movie. That was perfect. Sharing to all my mates
Thank you so much for doing this recap! I saw this movie 23 times when it came out. Just graduated high school and had a whole summer to myself. Soundtrack was phenomenal and my favorite scene is when Batman emerged from the fire after being torched by Two-Face. Amazing.
Same, graduated from high school and moved from a small town to Ann Arbor, Michigan. I spent a lot of time at the cinema that summer.
It's a milestone to me because of the soundtrack album. I still revisit it.
I believe Weekly World News would disagree about there never being a Bat Boy
ALSO: Let's not forget that The Director Joel Schumacher, was born in 1939, the same year Batman debuted in "Detective Comics #27. Another fact which was previously stated is that The 90's singing group En Vogue were the ladies of the night when Chris O'Donnell drives The Batmobile and opens the rooftop, with NOT Them, but R&B Singer BRANDY sing a soundtrack song. Last but not least The damsel in distress saved by Chris O'Donnell is actress Rebecca Budig, a known soap opera actress, for All My children & Bold and The Beautiful.
The O'Donnell thing is funny. There's people out there that look 15 years old that are in their mid 20s. It's crazy...
Dick Grayson's Robin also used a motorcycle in BTAS, in a tribute to the Akaria slide in 1993's Robin's Reckoning Part 2 and Schumacher had a pretty famous bike scene in Lost Boys he kind of replicates in one of his Batman films.
Also….. Damn Paul, looking snazzy! 😂😂😂😂
What a video 🙌 I didn’t realise a lot of the symbolism littered throughout this film
It's been reported that the crew could hear Val Kilmer walking around set saying, "Aww I'm feeling blue. Aww I'm feeling down." And that led to the working title for this to be Blue Harvest. Which of course was the working title for Star War's.
-Mr. Sunday Movies
I love every breakdown you do. Dog soldiers or the Bourne films I’d love to see please ❤❤
I absolutely love this film. I sold my Gameboy in a second hand shop in Sunderland to watch this about 8 times. Not proud of it but I skipped school for two days and walked from Ryhope to go to the cinema. I was too young to experience Batman or Returns in the cinema so this was MY definitive live action big screen adaptation. I think I still have the U2 cd knocking around somewhere.
Love it. Yeah Batman Forever was my first at the cinema as well. I also had the soundtrack on casette: U2, Seal, and Method Man. Brilliant memories.
Great video!! I had the album to this movie to when I was a kid and…. It was on a cassette 😂😂 but damn kiss from a rose still hits! Whenever I hear that song I think about this movie obviously and it’s always sunny when Dee was meeting the army vet for the first time and she played the song 😂
My FAVORITE Batmobile of ALL time, & good breakdown by the way 👍🏾.
They Malaysian dolls seem like a reference to the Worry Men dolls in a Mad Hatter centric episode of Batman animated series
Pretty stoked that the first video I get to see after becoming a member is this! 😂😂
This one has a lot of context to be considered- if you were able to watch this when it was released, this movie is a lot better than many think
What a rush reminds me of when the bad guy gets the mask in the mask.
Its all connected, 31:51 Ed Begly Jr. also did voice work in BTAS
I hadn't noticed most of 2face's thematic imagery...very subtle to put not one, but 2 cigarettes.
THANK YOU FOR COVERING THIS!!
Batman has been one of my favorite characters since I was a kid as well, and I have truly enjoyed every Batman breakdown you have made. Thanks for the videos
Hope you have a stellar year dude 👍...also keaton is the ultimate batman
looking sharp.
great video
I did not expect a shoutout to my favorite Podcast "Now Playing."! Been listening to them since 2016 and they've saved me being completely bored at work when I used to go onsite. If you love Heavy Spoilers, I'm sure you'll love "Now Playing"! I highly recommend listening to their review of "Catwoman"!
Glad I was there to see one of the Kevin Smith showings of the director cut. Just wish I didn’t have to wait till 3 a.m. to do it
One of my favorite movies as a kid, peak mid 90s movie! Watching it back now, it some of it doesnt hold up quite as well, but i still love it. . I do like the scene where Val Kilmer narrates how he became Batman (where he falls in the cave and sees the bat flying towards him).
They didn't even Warn a Brother lmao I'm dead bro
Ok, this is becoming a problem, I'm always first, I have too much free time.
Will it make you feel bad if you're NOT my "first?"
Notifications are a thing...
That means you're lucky
Time isn't free 😔
What about being 1st to the videos?
Damn i wanna see a full HR Giger Batmobile now
I didn't believe you'd do this one. Thanks Paul
Looking sharp Paul! Hope you’re taking your lady on a date night and get a break from The Twins! Thanks for the breakdown! I know it’s not exactly your genre, but I’ve always love Kilmer in this and Tombstone! I’d love to see a breakdown from and Englishman’s viewpoint of the so called “American West”! But I know you have hundreds of movies to breakdown and take apart! Love your attention to detail!
I tried to do an Alfred
I read the movie book when I was a kid, and it does have most of the deleted scenes in it. Or at least a version of them. Great video. Thanks.
If you want to see the director's cut or at least the closest to it, check out the official novelization titled either "Batman 3" or "Batman Forever". It has these cut scenes and I generally enjoyed it more than the film which I, admittedly, didn't dislike anyway.
That, and the comic. I liked the story structure more, especially having Bruce's journey to the Batcave and suit-up scene leading into his confrontation with Harvey, rather than meeting Chase.
Idc what anyone says. This was the best Batman movie ever made.
Joygasm.
I really loved val kilmer as batman over Keaton
I worked as an intern at the Fastenal next to the Cincinnati union terminal while they were filming scenes for Superman there. Such a cool experience to go there and watch.
The "Women of the Night" are members of the R&B music group En Vogue.
NO WAY! kill me
I’m surprised he missed this one. Oh well. “Never Gonna Get it”!
Not this time.
I love these videos, can you please do Videodrome ❤
Been waiting for this breakdown forever (pun not intended)! Even as an adult watching the film, I still appreciate Jim Carrey and Tommy Lee Jones trying to out ham each other. I still appreciate the security guard's extremely dedicated and hard serious proclamation of "OH NO! It's BOILING ACID!" in Two-Face's heist at the beginning.
Thank you Paul.
I commented on the Gone Girl review about how I felt the opening of the review felt like an editing mistake. This opening is much better and feels like a piece of the background for the development of the film rather than a out of order segment of the review. Good job guys.
Great work as always. Was slightly disappointed that you didn't spotlight the ridiculous delivery of every line the guard speaks when Batman's rescuing him from the vault, it's BEYOND camp.
44:21
Ouch.
I laughed at this hard tho 🤣 😂
Batman Forever will ALWAYS be one of my favs. I was 9 when it came out and was just my life for 2 years LOL. It's a shame you didn't talk about the alternate ending, which was a homage to Batman 89. I do think they Alternate ending would've been better for this movie than what we got.
Top notch content as always 👌🏻 would love to see you do Secret Window down the road! Thanks for doing what you do.
Thank you
Batman and Batman Returns will always be my faves of this era but Forever isn’t at all a bad movie, it was the next one that killed it for me 😂. Bale had the best complete trilogy tho.
Um...Bale has the ONLY complete trilogy so far, as every other Bat actor (Keaton, Affleck) had their franchise cut short, mostly due to WB studio interference. We'll see if Pattinson and Reeves can break the curse, but with Gunn's "Batman: Brave and the Bold" project being separate from Reeves' "The Batman" universe (as well as WB's habit of not liking multiple versions of a character existing at one time; Look up the "Bat Embargo" from around 2005) I have my doubts that Pattinson will be given a complete trilogy.
Been looking forward to this breakdown thank paul terrific as usual
Much appreciated mate, glad you enjoyed it
I normally don’t comment but OMG! I’m loving these deep dives of old movies like with the Easter eggs and stuff of ones I watched as a kid.breakdown the first 3 Spider-Man movies
Thank you
10:43 - just to add my brother, Val Kilmer dropped another banger in The Saint - Made #2 in the weekend box office - #1 was Liar, Liar 🙂 Love the long vids like this, keep it up!
Yeah the saint was great, considering covering that alongside the bond stuff
@heavyspoilers maybe you could explain Max Remo, I never could get into that flick.
52:00 The original Batman release on VHS had a pretty epic introduction/commercial for Warner Bros merch at the beginning. To quote Daffy Duck in it: "you can't watch a warner brothers movie, without a warner brothers ballcap!"
Great review, and your jokes were great. Just thought I'd Warn a brotha
Batman forever content in this day and age???!!! This is peak content
Cool breakdown bud
Mr Freeze smirks
Yo Paul, love ya man. Is there anyway we could get a Louise and Clark the new adventures of superman 90’s series break down?????? It would make my year 😎 keep up the good work dudes 🤘
Easter egg. Paul is wearing a suit and a tie. And the content is awesome as always.
The entire thing about Robin progressively getting older and older as you comment about him being adopted by Bruce was hilarious
I didn’t know I needed this.
Love the suit. And you
i love your suit although it caught me off guard 😂
Excellent video but you missed my favorite part. The moment Alfred gets bonked on the head when Riddler and Two-Face first break into Wayne Manor. As Alfred falls, he makes a mess by dropping his tray of Halloween candy. He's supposed to be passed out cold but his last act of consciousness is to clean up the mess he just made. He pushes everything out of the doorway and off to the side. Favorite part of the whole movie
I always appreciated Jones in this because I could feel the seething hatred behind a mask. He felt authentically unhinged while Jim was just Jim.
Was so excited that he said Metropolis so excited!
Looking sharp man!
I love this movie! Great Soundtrack! Val Kilmer is a underrated Batman
39:13 hahahahah the best
One of my favorite DC films. Val Kilmer, Nicole Kidman, Tommy lee Jones and Jim Carey were perfectly cast.
Hearing Brad Dourif could have played Scarecrow hurts me deep in my soul. That could have been amazing.
The puns 😂😂
Go to san.com/spoilers to stay fully informed. Subscribe through my link and/or download the app.
brad dourif would've been awesome as scarecrow
He's woke though brugh. A woke moralist from what I under stan.
@@jennyanydots2389And how does that make any difference? He's a very talented character actor, who's capable of playing roles that do not reflect his personal beliefs.
Thanks for the breakdown
