  • Gough's Cave is located in Cheddar Gorge on the Mendip Hills, in Cheddar, Somerset, England. The cave is 115 m (377 ft) deep and is 3.405 km (2.12 mi) long, and contains a variety of large chambers and rock formations. It contains the Cheddar Yeo, the largest underground river system in Britain.
The initial sections of the cave, previously known as Sand Hole, were accessible prior to the 19th century. Between 1892 and 1898 a retired sea captain, Richard Cox Gough, who lived in Lion House in Cheddar, found, excavated and opened to the public further areas of the cave, up to Diamond Chamber, which is the end of the show cave today. Electric lighting was installed in the show caves in 1899.
The cave is susceptible to flooding often lasting for up to 48 hours, however in the Great Flood of 1968 the flooding lasted for three days.
The extensive flooded parts of the cave system were found and explored between 1985 and 1990

been in them when I was a kid.. my kid sister screamed the whole way round.. excellent.. also Clearwell Caverns in the Forest of Dean.. not on the stupid tour.. Was down in the forest with a friend and we came upon a hole in the ground with a tunnel at the bottom.. being brats we had a source of fire (what country kids didn't have matches and a candle in the 70's?) so we went in exploring.. after a while we popped out in a large cavern just as the "tour" came out of a hole on the other side.. they looked at us.. and we looked at them.. then we buggered off back in our hole and explored some of the side passages we had found

Maybe I should not say but back in the day ... we used to race quick bikes up and down the gorge ... how no one ever had an accident i do not know ... skill , luck I do not know , but I would not try that any more ! At Gough's cave entrance there used to be a wooden hut for a caving club . Around 1990 , could be out be a few years here mind , I went to the cave to have a caving experience , proper caving not a tourist visit . It was great . If you can go and try proper pot holing .

These are ancient underground cities, inner earth. They dont want you shining your light up or in certain places because they dont want you seeing certain stuff I bet. Also, I feel like that guy was tailing you guys bc the cameras and youtube channels lol. How did he get so close so fast?! Great video, you guys have so much cool stuff in the UK.

Total bollocks. These caves are at ground level into the gorge. In theory not inner earth🤦‍♂️ and for millions of years were under water, and only the front of the cave was inhabited by humans....... you're probably a flerfer too I bet 🙄🤦‍♂️

Great video Matt 👍 thanks for sharing 👍 enjoyed this 👍 beautiful places some of these old caves look forward to seeing yr next video 👍glad they allow the public into see this! Not sure they shud charge, which I'm sure they do, and shame they block so much of it off.. anyway amazing old place and great to see, so thanks Matt 👍💖and surprised they moaned about yr lights when the place is lit up like a Christmas tree 🎄 lol 🤣and I agree Matt the whole video thing is annoying cos like u say u can watch all that when u get home, u go to these places to see the caves and the history not a film!! I didn't like all the music and voiceovers that they did too, cud see much better with yr torchlight too Matt that second cave was beautiful but u cudnt see much of it cos all those silly coloured lights, ruined it really, still enjoyed seeing both of these just better with u explaining things like u normally do, not there annoying loud music and background chat!! X

There is also a great seller of Sadoli Italian dairy ice cream(Welsh Italian Family!), who sell's 80 varieties!!!
We were looking at going in these caves with our dogs, but don't now need too!
First caves were good, but second was a complete waste of time(and money!).
